Ein Himmel voller Bambus und Brezel für Bao Bao....Belated Tribute to Bao Bao and Panda Memories

Bao Bao on August 19, three days before his death

Last month Bao Bao died. He was the only living Panda bear in a zoo in Germany, a celebrity, not only because of his old age. At age 34, he was the oldest living male Panda living in a zoo.-

Bao Bao arrived on 5 November 1980 at the age of two years along with the panda females Tjen Tjen (天天 Tiāntiān, 'small sky ', often referred to as Tian Tian and Tien Tien) in West Berlin. The Chinese government under Hua Guofeng had given the animals in 1979 to German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt as a state gift, who donated them to the Berlin Zoo.Both, Bao Bao and Tjen Tjen were caught in the wild, coming from the then almost untapped nature reserves bordering the Chinese city of Chengdu. They had been caught in large wooden traps, baited with meat. In that time, China hired Tibetans for the hunting who were said to handle these animals well.

Happy born appr. in September 1935, here in France
He left Europe on an ocean liner at the port of Cherbourg on June 6, 1939.
Happy arrived in Saint Louis 18 days later and stayed there until his death on March 10, 1946.

Bao Bao and Tjen Tjen were not the first giant pandas to be seen in Berlin. In 1939, Happy, a male panda, was the first panda ever to come to Europe for exhibition. Ruhe and Fockelmann, the animal dealers who made Happy come, showed him in the zoos of Paris, Cologne, Leipzig, Hanover and Munich. Happy was later shipped to the United States. Happy was shown in Berlin for a period of 63 days in the central hall of the Antelope House.

19 years later, the Giant Panda Chi Chi was exhibited in the so-called bear cage of the animal zoo at Tierpark Berlin from 2 to 26 August 1958. It was a great success. According to press reports, the young animal attracted 400,000 visitors to the zoo. Chi-Chi was originally sold in the United States. Because of a trade embargo on Chinese goods, she was later acquired for a price of 12,000 pound sterling from the London Zoo.

Chi Chi (female) was born approximately in September 1954.Her name means "Naughty, Mischievous Little Girl" in Chinese. She was caught in Baoxing in the Sichuan mountains on May 5, 1955. She was only a few months old. She lived at the Beijing Zoo from June 4, 1955.
In 1958, Austrian animal dealer Heini Demmer, bought her from the Beijing Zoo. He toured with Chi Chi along several zoos in Europe.

She lived at Zoo Frankfurt from May 23 until July 3, at Zoo Kobenhavn from July 3 until August 2, at Tierpark Berlin from August 2 until August 26, again at Zoo Frankfurt from August 26 until September 4 and at London Zoo from September 5. Heini Demmer sold her to London Zoo on September 30, 1958.

In 1964, Chi Chi was successfully treated for an eye infection whilst under a general anaesthetic.
She went on a mating trip to An An in Moscow from March 11 until October 17, 1966, but without success.Chi Chi died on July 22, 1972.(source & more about Chi Chi)

Until their departure to Berlin Bao Bao and Tjen Tjen lived with six other pandas in Chengdu Zoo. There, the tamer Bao Bao was considered a crowd favorite with the Chinese visitors. His female keepers had taught him how to hit a somersault while Tjen Tjen was said to be prickly.

After moving into their new home, two facilities with appropriate indoor stables worth around 750,000 Mark and especially built for them, Bao Boa adapted well to his new habitat. He got used again to Tjen Tjen who had been separated from him for the transportation from China to Germany. The two panda bears quickly became crowd pullers and increased the revenue of the Berlin Zoo with ticket sale increase by 30 percent. Up to the age of four, the two animals lived together peacefully, until arguments and violent quarrels started. In 1981 Tjen Tjen went into estrus, but died three years later, on 8 February 1984, from a viral infection, there was no offspring as Bao Bao hadn't yet attained sexual maturity. Tjen Tjen was at that time the only female panda bear capable of reproduction in the Zoological Gardens of the Western world.

Bao Bao then lived alone in the Berlin Zoo, as all attempts failed to find a mate for him. In the early 1990s, attempts were made to mate the animal with female panda bears from other zoos.

In 1991 he was hired for this reason to the London Zoo, which had just got Giant Panda Ming Ming (明明, little light ')from China. But the efforts to get them in breeding mood by natural means was not successful. The female panda was not interested in Bao Bao, who even attacked her and bit off her ear. The two animals had to be separated, and on 26 May 1993 returned to Berlin, due to the high consumption of dog biscuits with ten kilograms overweight.

1983 - Bao Bao in London

On 14 April 1995, the Berlin Zoo got another female Panda bear from the Beijing Zoo, this time on loan for five years as panda diplomacy materialised not anymore as gift from the Chinese government, the Beijing Zoo got work equipment in return.Bao Bao and Tjen Tjen had been the last pandas who were given as gift to a foreign country.

But even with the ten-year old Yan Yan (meaning "the beautiful" or "the Cute") who previously had been four times in other zoos on loan in vain for breeding, no offspring would see the light. Pandas are only once a year for about 36 hours ready to conceive. Hormone therapy was tried on Yan Yan only with the effect that she was masturbating using a bamboo stick, which was concealed from the public. From 1997, artificial insemination was tried. Bao Bao was anesthetized, and with an electro-ejaculation he was forced to donate his sperm, which in turn was injected to Yan Yan.

All these efforts were accompanied by great media attention by the Berlin newspapers, until it was established in 1999, that the female was barren and only false pregnancies would be able, while Bao Bao at age 22 was approaching the end of his reproductive abilities.

In 2004, two panda experts traveled from Beijing to Berlin Zoo, to "examin" Yan Yan. Among them was also Zhenxin Peng, the director of the Giant Panda Center. The Chinese experts gave Bao Bao's disinterest the blame for the lack of pregnancies, and with a frozen semen cocktail of several pandas from the Beijing Zoo more fertilization attempts were tried out on Yan Yan.Although Zhenxin assumed that the 7th attempt would be crowned with success, nothing happened. The breeding experiments were discontinued after ten years in 2005, after further fertilization experiments with Bao Bao had failed on the German side in May 2004 with Bao Bao's sperm, in the meantime certified as flawless. If panda offspring would have seen the light at Berlin Zoo, it would have automatically been declared state property of the People's Republic.

In 2002, the loan agreement concerning Yan Yan between the Berlin Zoo and the China Wildlife Conservation Association was extended for another five years under concessions. So Berlin invested heavily in cooperation with Chinese biologists and scientists and helped funding two conservation projects for the endangered giant panda in China.

Four years later, in October 2006, the right of "residency" Yan Yan in Berlin was at stake again. But the former zoo director Jürgen Lange reported to the press that Yan Yan had to stay in Berlin and the zoo was trying to get a younger panda couple in the long term. The value for a young panda was estimated in 2007 to be one million euros. A completely redesigned panda enclosure was mentioned too. At that time alone the cost of insurance for the two animals amounted to around € 35,000, while the bamboo, delivered twice a month by a specialized company in southern France in refrigerated trucks, cost the same amount per year. -

On 26 March 2007 the Berlin pandas made headlines in the German and international media when the 22-year-old Yan Yan died without signs of disease from an acute intestinal obstruction. Eventually, this had led to blood poisoning and in turn resulted in a heart and circulatory failure. In addition the vets, who carried out the necroscopy, found also a liver tumor.

In Chinese media the false theory circulated that Yan Yan had become a victim of a diet of sweets and alcohol, while the German tabloid press and prominent British newspapers made the growing popularity of Knut the polar bear responsible for the death of the animal. By order of the Chinese Ministry of Forestry, the corpse of Yan Yan was to be transferred to China and not remain as a stuffed animal specimen in Berlin. However, until early January 2008, the body was still kept in the Berlin Museum of Natural History.

Bao Bao

Despite his advanced age Bao Bao was in his last years a healthy bear, but was sporadically supplied with a circulation-enhancing drug (Karsivan). In March 2009, his weight was listed at 105 KG, 10 KG less than the years before. The 14 hours he was awake per day, he spent twelve with food intake. In his 350 m² enclosure Bao Bao consumed daily about twelve kilos of bamboo and soy, rice dumplings and chicken soups. From 1980 to 2009, he was in care of the giant panda keeper Lutz Störmer who described him as "reliable buddy without deceitful thoughts" and who was greeted by Bao Bao with a curt "barking".

Read here what Bao Bao's keeper Lutz Störmer recalls.

Erinnerungen.-

On 22 August 2012 Bao Bao, the 34-year-old giant panda, died. Lutz Störmer has cared for him for 28 years as his keeper. He himself has been for four years now in retirement. Memories.

"Our former Director Prof. Dr. Heinz-Georg Klös had a good rapport with former Chancellor Helmut Schmidt, who had received at that time two panda bears from the Chinese government. Beijing was, after all, twin city of Berlin.
In 1980 it happened: Together with our Assistant Director and a veterinarian, I flew to Chengdu in Sichuan Province, to pick the two bears. This was also the first flight of my life. We had a half day at the zoo to get to know Bao Bao (Chinese: "darling") and the female panda Tjen Tjen. They were both so trusting. We fed them with soup and brushed them. God, how sweet they were! They were not even two years old. This experience has influenced me for my future life.

Then with both of them on the same plane back to Berlin. Therefore, Lufthansa had removed the seats of the last rows. From Frankfurt it was the U.S. military aircraft Hercules which brought us to Tegel. The tiles in the new Panda enclosure were not quite dry, when we arrived.

Bao Bao and Tjen Tjen gave everything just a brief sniff, that was it so far for acclimatization. Main thing, the food. Bao Bao was no food despiser. He always got a wide range: baby food, sugar cane as a treat, baby soups, meat and fish soups, figs. In the wild, pandas eat 15 to 20 kg freshly cut bamboo per day. This culinary wish we were not able to meet like that. Our bamboo supply came first from France and later then from Holland.

Ming Ming in 2008 at the Xiangjiang Wild Animal World in Guangdong Province, where she had lived since 1998 after her unsuccessful mating trips to London and Ireland.
When she died of kidney failure on 7 May 2011, she was also at age 34 and considered then the world oldest giant panda.

1991 Bao Bao went on tour again, he spent half a year at the London Zoo to be mated with the female panda Ming Ming. It has not really sparked between the two. On the contrary: The little bully has bitten Ming Ming in the leg and bit her an ear off.

The worst experience for me was, in the late 80s, an alleged professional photographer was allowed into Bao Bao's enclosure. That was not a professional, it was a loudmouth. He could not even handle animals. He ignored the instructions of the keepers, so that there was an unnecessary accident. Since that day the keepers were not anymore allowed to go into Bao Bao's enclosure, direct contact was cut off from today to tomorrow.

Bao Bao on 19 August 2012

The day before Bao Bao died, a colleague called me and told me that the end was probably approaching. I think, as peaceful as Bao Bao has died, it's okay. No other panda in the world has become so old, not even in China: 34 years. But I hope very much that China again gives us a panda. I will never forget Bao Bao and am grateful for the time I have been with him. " (source)

Geburtstag feierte.Hier ist sie, Jia Jia...-

Just a little note concerning the assumption that Bao Bao was the oldest panda bear in human care, as we could learn, also Ming Ming lived up to 34 years, but there is still one female panda living in Hongkong who actually celebrated her 34th birthday in August. Here she is, Jia Jia ...

Jia Jia at Ocean Park Hongkong

I didn't find pics of Bao Bao together with similar birthday cakes, but enjoy instead some lovely pics of Bao Bao during his feeding time on 5 July 2009.

More pics of that day can be found here.

And now the pic which gets always into my mind whenever I think of Bao Bao since I have seen it for the first time...

Christina M took this pic on 27 December 2010 and it is in my opinion the ultimate proof that Bao Bao did not only sleep and eat...))

By the way, other pandas do that too...

"Male dogs lift a leg - male pandas raise even both hind legs when they have to do their small business. The purpose of this complicated performance is for territorial marking which should be applied as high as possible on the trunk so that rivals in the vicinity who come along and sniff it out are too impressed to compete."

With Bao Bao's death, an era has come to an end, not just for the zoo, he was Germany's only panda. In Europe, the world's endangered animals are shown only in a few zoos, including Vienna, Madrid, Edinburgh and more recently in Beauval in France.

He was also one of the very few animals I had been able to see myself when visiting Zoo Berlin.

Des Kaisers neue Kleider...Some rare penguins

Photo:Andrew Evans

Saturday evening is National Geographic time, a program I try not to miss as I enjoy to see the photographers whose photos I like or because one hears new traveling stories and discovers more new pics even when they date back already some years.Last Saturday it was Andrew Evan's turn with his account of his experience to travel from his hometown Washington D.C. to Antarctica by bus, at his final destination he was in for a big surprise as he was awaited by a black Emperor penguin.

"He looked like a single black king moving across a chessboard of so many white pawns. Our first glimpse was puzzling until we drew closer and realized that this was not some other bird but indeed another penguin of a different color.

Our group from Lindblad Expeditions spotted this very unique bird at Fortuna Bay on the subantarctic island of South Georgia. Out of several thousand pairs of king penguins, this was the only individual that was entirely black although earlier in the morning I had spotted another that showed muted coloration. Recent science papers show that the trait has been documented only a handful of times in South Georgia. Some fellow travelers recall seeing a melanistic penguin at St. Andrew's Bay, also on South Georgia.

Melanism is merely the dark pigmentation of skin, fur--or in this case, feathers. The unique trait derives from increased melanin in the body. Genes may play a role, but so might other factors. While melanism is common in many different animal species (e.g. Washington, D.C. is famous for its melanistic squirrels), the trait is extremely rare in penguins. All-black penguins are so rare there is practically no research on the subject--biologists guess that perhaps one in every quarter million of penguins shows evidence of at least partial melanism, whereas the penguin we saw appears to be almost entirely (if not entirely) melanistic.

So far, king penguins represent the most documented cases of melanism, though there is evidence of partial melanism appearing in other penguin species, namely Adélie, chinstrap, gentoo, macaroni and royal penguins.

Observing this black penguin waddle across South Georgia's black sand beach revealed no different behavior than that of his fellow penguins. In fact, he seemed to mix well. Regarding feeding and mating behavior there is no real way to tell, but I do know that we were all fascinated by his presence and wished him the best for the coming winter season." (source)

When Evans tweeted the pic of the black penguin, lots of people thought the black penguin was photoshopped but there were others who had taken photos of the same individual as Krystina Richter who was on the same expedition.

And there were others who had seen black penguins before.

"After we blogged about the rare melanistic black penguin contributing editor Andrew Evans spotted while on South Georgia Island, we got a comment from Ted Cheeseman of Cheesemans' Ecology Safaris out of California, noting that he too had seen the black penguin in January 2006 while leading a tour through Fortuna Bay on South Georgia. One of his expedition leaders, photographer Hugh Rose, snapped this picture at the time, and says that's he's been looking for the penguin on every expedition he's been on since." (source)

This playful black penguin stands out from the crowd on the island of South Georgia. Wildlife photographer Michael Nolan travelled to the Antarctic to capture the penguin breeding colonies when he came across the rare male. The penguin came inquisitively out of the ocean and up to Michael's feet, before returning to its chick (surrounded by other "okum" boy chicks) to feed it. These 'black' penguins are known as melanistic penguins and are incredibly rare (1 in every 30,000).Their colour is caused by an increased amount of dark pigmentation of skin, feathers, eyes or hair, resulting in a loss of pigmentation patterns in their features.(source)

But there are also white penguins.
"White penguins are rare, and spotting a leucistic Chinstrap penguin is a once-in-a-lifetime event. The nearly-white penguin chick was photographed Monday by David Stephens, a naturalist on the National Geographic Journey to Antarctica expedition.

Located on Antarctica's Aitcho Islands, the rare bird is described by Stephens as "whitish, but not quite albino." Also called albinistic penguins, the leucistic bird has a lower level of pigmentations and differ from albinos because they have pigmented eyes, according to ABC News."

"The rate of leucism in Chinstrap penguins is approximately 1 in 146,000."

Whatever the rate of meeting one, I just wish  all these fellows long life whatever clothes they choose to wear!!
