This recent photo from an observation camera at the Zoo in Wuppertal, Germany, shows polar bear mother "Vilma" and her cub "Anori" in their litter den at the zoo. Anori was born on January 4, 2012, together with a sibling who died after a week. Anori's father is "Lars", who is also the father of Berlin's famous deceased polar bear cub "Knut". (source)

"Das Wuppertaler Eisbärpaar "Vilma" und "Lars" hat Nachwuchs. Noch kann das Zooteam das Jungtier allerdings nur auf den Bildern einer Videoüberwachungskamera bestaunen. Niemand hat Zutritt zur streng abgeschotteten Wurfhöhle, in der sich Mutter und Kind aufhalten.

Ursprünglich kamen am 4. Januar zwei Jungtiere im Wuppertaler Zoo zur Welt, von denen allerdings nur eines überlebte. In den ersten Tagen habe Vima sogar das tote Junge noch umsorgt und abgeleckt, erzählt Zoobiologe Andreas Haeser-Kalthoff. Dann habe sie das Kleine aber, wie bei Eisbären üblich, "auf Eisbärenart beerdigt".

Jetzt brauchen Vilma und ihr Jungtier erst einmal viel Ruhe, denn die Zeit in der Wurfhöhle ist heikel. Stress oder übermäßige Störungen könnten schlimmstenfalls dazu führen, dass Vilma ihren Nachwuchs tötet. Die Eisbärin, eine gebürtige Rostockerin,die von 2004 bis 2008 in Nürnberg lebte, hatte dort Ende 2007 eine Zwillingsgeburt, bei der keines der Jungen überlebte. Da damals in Nürnberg keine Kamera installiert war, weiß man noch heute nicht, was Vilma bewogen hat, ihre beiden Jungtiere nach 5 Wochen vorbildlicher Pflege im Januar 2008 aufzufressen, ein Verhalten welches neben Störungen gewöhnlich bei Schwäche und Krankheit eines Jungtiers vorkommt, in der Natur wie auch in einem Zoo.

Zurzeit sehe es für den Eisbärnachwuchs in Wuppertal aber gut aus. Das Kleine krabbele schon fleißig auf dem warmen Körper der Mutter herum - immer auf der Suche nach der Milch spendenden Zitze. Und so erleben die Tierpfleger gerade spannende Zeiten im Pausenraum. "Dort steht nämlich der Überwachungsmonitor."

Auch wenn viele Artikel so tun, als stünde das Geschlecht schon fest, dem ist nicht so. Noch weiß man nicht, ob es sich bei Anori, um ein weibliches oder männliches Eisbärenkind handelt, da das Kleine bei stürmischem Wetter erfolgte, wählte der Zoo als Namen Anori, dies ist grönländisch und bedeutet "Wind".

Offspring for polar bear couple "Vilma" and "Lars" in Wuppertal to be marvelled at only by images from a video surveillance camera. No one has access to the strictly foreclosed maternity den.

Originally Vilma gave birth to twins on January 4, of which only one survived. In the first days Vilma is said to have cared even for the dead cub, licking the body. But then she "buried" it the way polar bear moms do usually when a litter is dead or too weak.The only thing Vilma and the little bear need now is rest to avoid disturbance which could cause excessive stress sometimes causing a polar bear mom even to kill her offspring. When Vilma, originally from Rostock, lived in Nuremberg she had given birth to twins in which none of the cubs survived, she ate them after 5 weeks of exemplary care. Since no camera was installed, no one can say what Vilma has led to devour her two cubs in January 2008, a behavior occurring in the wild and in captivity when cubs are weak or ill. Polar bear mothers are extremely susceptible to interference and the coming weeks are crucial for the survival of Anori, a Greenlandic name already given to the little bear, meaning "wind" as it was born on a stormy day.

Currently it looks good for Anori in Wuppertal. The little bear is already busy crawling around on the warm body of the mother - always on the lookout for the milk-giving teat. And so the zookeeper experience just an exciting time in the break room where the monitoring system is located.

Until now the sex of Anori is not yet determined although several articles have been quick mentioning Anori either to be the half-sister or the half-brother of Knut.

Eisbärmännchen Lars, wie wir alle wissen, auch Vater von Knut, bekommt von all dem Wirbel wenig mit. Er durfte schon seit Wochen nicht mehr mit Vilma zusammen sein und dies wird auch noch eine Weile so weitergehen, was für ihn sicher sehr hart sein muss. Die Trennung von Mutter und Jungtier ist nötig, da Eisbärmännchen bekannterweise selbst ihrem eigenen Nachwuchs gefährlich werden können. (Eine Ausnahme war Felix in Fasano.)

Wer das Jungtier als Zoobesucher sehen will, muss sich voraussichtlich noch bis April gedulden. Früher werden Mutter und Kind wohl nicht aus der Wurfhöhle herauskommen.
Nach der Geburt von Eisbärmädchen Svenja 1995, einer Schwester von Troll aus dem Berliner Tierpark, ist Anori das erste überlebende Eisbärjunge im Wuppertaler Zoo.Wünschen wir also Vilma und Anori alles Gute!

Male polar bear Lars, who incidentally is the father of Knut, does not know much about all the fuss going on at the moment. He hasn't been together with Vilma already for some time now, which must be really hard on him, and this will continue now for quite some time due to security reasons as male polar bears can be dangerous for even their own offspring. ( One exception is Felix during his times in Fasano.)

Who wants to see Anori in the zoo, will probably have to wait at least until April when mother and child will emerge from the maternity den.

After the birth of polar bear girl Svenja 1995, a sister of Troll from Tierpark Berlin, Anori is the first surviving polar bear cub in the Wuppertal Zoo.So, let's just cross the fingers for Vilma and the little one!

Das war das erste Schneebild aus einem Zoo, das ich in diesem Winter gefunden habe, es müsste schon vorher welche gegeben haben, denn der Winter hatte sich in den USA ja bereits ausgesprochen früh für ein paar Tage im Oktober gemeldet.-

Und dann kann ich mich nicht erinnern überhaupt noch Bilder von Schnee und Eis gesehen zu haben...So dass ich froh war, ein Bild wie dieses unten zu finden (auch wenn tatsächlich schon letztes Jahr im März aufgenommen), in Zeiten, wo alle von Regen und Sturmtiefs in Europa berichten.-

Das Foto oben, aufgenommen auf dem Leland River in Michigan, zeigt Eiskuchenformen, geformt wie Untertassen, ein Phänomen, das auch als Pfannkucheneis bekannt ist.Die Kuchen können abgerundet sein länglich oder unregelmäßig geformte Aggregate von mehreren Zentimetern bis hin zu mehreren Metern im Durchmesser, aber in der Regel weniger als etwa vier Zoll (10 cm) Dicke. Sie bilden sich aus Ansammlungen von Eisbrei in relativ schnell fließendem Wasser. Beachten Sie die etwas aufgebogenen Kanten, Ergebnis der wiederholten Stöße mit anderen Kuchen. Die erhöhten Ränder auf kleinen Eisbrocken inmitten sonst nicht konsolidierten Glasuren ist häufig ein Hinweis darauf, dass die Bildung von Pfannkuchen-Eis im Gange ist. Ich beginne heute mit einem Lied, das die meisten von euch sicherlich kennen...-

Today I start with a song which most of you probably will know...

Wer hätte gedacht, dass dieses Lied einmal, und zwar schon in den 60er Jahren, als Name für ein Regierungsprogramm herhalten musste, in dem bis heute Millionen von Vögeln vergiftet werden?

Who would have thought that this song would make years later, already in the 60s, the name of a governmental agricultural program to poison millions of birds in the US?

Vorgestern fand ich folgende Meldung, offenbar hat das US Landwirtschaftsministeriums auf Betreiben von Farmern seit den 60er Jahren systematisch große Populationen von Vögeln vergiftet, ohne dass es irgendwelche Anhaltspunkte für von Vöglen übertragene Krankheiten gab. In den Kommentaren eines Artikels liest man zwar von einem Pilz, der von Vögeln ausgeschieden wird, der für andere Tiere fatal sein kann, doch dies ist in den Artikeln zu "Byebye Blackbird" nicht erwähnt. Ein Farmer aus Nebraska hatte sich darüber beschwert, dass Vögel das Futter seiner Tiere verunreinigten. Hier ist ein pdf download link, wo man sehen kann, wieviele Vögel im Jahr 2009 vergiftet wurden, denn man hat auch Buch geführt. Ganz neu ist diese Meldung offenbar nicht, denn nur wenige Tage nach meinem Neujahrsposting letztes Jahr hätte ich folgendes finden können. -

The day before yesterday I found following article about the mass poisoning of birds by USDA , who have admitted to poisoning millions of birds during the past years, starting in the 60s, without any indication of diseases transmitted by the birds. In one of the recently posted comments to the article, someone pointed out that in the feces of the birds a fungus might be fatal to other animals but this fungus was not mentioned as background for the program which started after a farmer from Nebraska had apparently complained to USDA "that starlings were defecating in his feed meal". Here the pdf link with the figures of how many birds were poisoned in 2009, as it was recorded meticulously. I am wondering about how old these news are because when googling for a German article I found this already posted a few days after my New Year's post 2011.

Vor einem Jahr...Ein Neujahrsspaziergang....One year ago....Meet Leona

Der jüngste Pinguin im Zoo in Münster ist auch der mutigste. Zum Neujahr watschelte das Tier ausgerechnet in das Löwengehege.

Ein kleiner Pinguin ist bei einem Neujahrsspaziergang im Allwetterzoo Münster unbekümmert zum Löwengehege herübergewatschelt. Über das vereiste Wasserbecken der Pinguinanlage und Besucherwege gelangte das drei Monate alte Weibchen zum Löwenhaus.

Wie der Zoo am Montag mitteilte, landete der Vogel wohl mit einem großen Sprung auf dem Eis des Löwengrabens. Zum Glück schlummerte die Löwenfamilie aber im Warmen. Mit Heringen lockte eine Pflegerin den Brillenpinguin schließlich vom Eis.

Die Ausreißerin ist der jüngste Pinguin ihrer Art im Allwetterzoo. Ihre Pflegerin taufte sie nach dem mutigen Ausflug auf den Namen „Leona“.

Ob seine Eltern dem kleinen Pinguin die Geschichte des legendären „Nr. 137“ erzählt haben? Auch er büxte einst -1998- aus, und wurde damit bundesweit berühmt, tauchte allerdings nie wieder auf.... (source)

A baby penguin at the Münster Zoo in Germany has been reported on January 3, 2011 to have been spared from the lions after it strolled the lion’s den.

According to international reports, the cute baby penguin had escaped from its pool and through a den of a sleeping lions it took itself on a tour, unaware of the danger it gets into. A visitor reportedly spotted the African penguin strolling up and down the ice-covered moat alongside the enclosure. He then alerted the authorities who have spent a day to get the penguin out of the den. Reports said that zookeepers lured the penguin with a trail of herrings.

“Luckily the family of lions didn’t pose a threat because they were dozing in the warmth of their house,” the zoo authorities said in a statement. The baby penguin born in September was named Leona after the incident. It was only known as number 459 as the usual practice of the zoo of just assigning numbers to its penguins. (source)

Zoo-Update "Leona ist im Jahr 2010 als Nachzügler am 17. September aus dem Ei geschlüpft. Sie bekam die Nummer 454, ist also der vierhundertundvierundfünfzigste in Münster jemals geschlüpfte Brillenpinguin. Die anderen in der Brutsaison 2010 aufgezogenen Pinguinküken sind am 13. November in den Zoo Jaszbereny in Ungarn umgezogen. Nur Leona blieb. "

Leona hatched in 2010 as late chick on 17 September. She got the number 454, as she was the 454th African penguin that ever hatched in Munster. The other chicks born that season before her, were all moved to Zoo Jaszbereny in Hungria. Leona is still in Munster.

Information was provided in September 2011 by Ilona Zuehlke from Allwetterzoo Munster who I want to thank for her kindness and promptness. By the way, the zoo seems to be interesting, well caring for its animals, and has a good website offering also colouring animal pages for kids...

2012 - Eine Herausforderung...Starting with a challenge

Um es gleich vorwegzunehmen, wir beginnen das neue Jahr sofort mit einer Herausforderung, also, wir liegen nicht auf der faulen Haut herum, sondern beweisen unsere Kreativität, Ausdauer, Reaktionsschnelligkeit und auch noch unser Wissen um uns fit zu halten für alles, was in diesem neuen Jahr auf uns zukommen mag...))

To put it straight to the point, we will begin the new year immediately with a challenge which means, we do not lie around lazily, instead we will demonstrate our creativity, endurance, reaction speed, proving our knowledge at the same time, just in order to keep fit for everything what may come in this new Year...))

Christmas 2011 - About Surprises, Nostalgia and Little Wonders

Während Santa immer noch dabei ist Geschenke zu verteilen, im Moment auf dem amerikanischen Kontinent, wo er sich stetig nördlich vorarbeitet, um in Kürze wieder bei sich daheim in Grönland anzukommen, möchte ich an dieser Stelle allen ein schönes Weihnachtsfest wünschen, ob mit Familie, alleine oder unterstützt durch Vierbeiner jeglicher Art.

Bedanken möchte ich mich auch für euer Interesse an dem etwas anderen Adventskalender, der seinem Namen alle Ehren macht, denn es gibt noch immer kein 24. Törchen!

Noch ist Weihnachten ja nicht vorbei, aber ich gestehe, viele meiner Ideen dafür wirkten irgendwie blass, angesichts der Erwartungen, die meist daran gebunden sind. Auch denkt man unweigerlich an das letzte Jahr Weihnachten in Berlin mit Knut, wo er traditionsgemäß mit seinem Weihnachtsbaum viel Spaß hatte...Ich habe Christinas Video in der Vorweihnchtszeit mit "meinen" Kindern in Rodrigues angeschaut und hatte immer immer noch soviel Freude daran wie die Kids...-

While Santa is still delivering, at the moment on the American continent, where he steadily works himself northwards, soon to be home in Greenland, I would like to wish at this point everyone a very Merry Christmas, either if you are alone or surrounded by family, friends or four-legged companions.

I would also like to thank you for your interest in something which has been a slightly different Advent calendar, which makes honor to its name, because there is still no 24th surprise!

Christmas is not over yet, but I confess that many of my ideas for this special day somehow looked pale in the face of expectations, which are usually bound by it. Also, I came always inevitably back to Christmas last year in Berlin, when Knut once again had so much fun with the traditional Christmas tree given at Berlin Zoo... During the past weeks I watched the lovely video, made by ChristinaM, with "my" children in Rodrigues, and as them, I still had as much fun watching him despite the feelings of nostalgia and sadness...

Und wo wir bei Kids sind...auch der neue Eisbärennachwuchs hätte gut ins 24. Törchen gepasst, ein Foto hatte es mir ganz besonders angetan, man hätte raten können, wer das wohl ist, aber mittlerweile wissen alle schon von der kleinen Siku...-

Speaking of kids...the recently born polar bear offspring would have made a nice surprise for the 24th, in particular one photo I like so much, one could have used it to make everybody guess who it is, but in the meantime the whole world seems to have taken notice of little Siku...

Ich musste unweigerlich an eine Szene aus Nietzsches Biographie denken, als er 1889, 45- jährig, in Turin von Mitgefühl überwältigt ein geschundenes Pferd umarmt. Dies war kurz vor seinem eigenen Zusammenbruch bevor er nach Basel in eine Nervenklinik kam. (mehr hier)

1889 war es üblich, dass Pferde arbeiteten, auch noch zu Zeiten meiner Kindheit gab es Pferde, die den Milch- oder Fischwagen zogen, doch nach Mitte der 60er Jahre verschwanden diese Bilder für immer aus meiner Heimatstadt. Auf einem Tagesausflug in Polen an der Ostsee begegnete ich später noch einmal Arbeitspferden, ein paar Kutschen standen wartend herum, um ein paar wenige Touristen durch den Ort zu fahren. Hier hatte ich nicht den Eindruck, dass die Tiere übermäßig eingespannt waren und es war in einer ländlichen Umgebung, wo die Menschen nach wie vor einen anderen Bezug zu Tieren in ihrem Alltag haben.

Ich kann jedoch nicht verhehlen, dass ich überrascht war, als ich zum ersten Mal von den Pferdekutschen in New York las, nie hätte ich es für möglich gehalten, dass im 21. Jahrhundert Pferde durch abgasverseuchte Großstädte ziehen müssen. Nun zu lesen, dass es seit Juni bereits 4 Vorfälle gab bei denen die dort arbeitenden Pferde kollabierten, sich verletzt haben und in einem Fall ein Pferd sogar starb, erfüllt mich mit Traurigkeit und Ärger, diese wunderbaren Tiere gehören ganz sicher nicht in die Innenstadt von New York!

Hier ist der Originalartikel mit einem Video das ich ebenfalls daneben finde, die Gier, das Leiden des Tieres auf komme was wolle unbedingt festhalten zu wollen hat mich beschämt, auch wenn es vielleicht mit guten Absichten geschah. Und was die Pferde betrifft, hoffe ich übrigens, dass PETA es vielleicht schafft, dieser Art von Geschäft ein Ende zu bereiten...-

I inevitably had to think of a scene from Nietzsche's biography, as in 1889, at age 45 , he had overwhelmed by compassion hugged a flayed horse in Turin. This was shortly before his own collapse before he became a patient in a mental hospital in Basel.

In 1889, working horses were a common sight, even still at times of my childhood, there were horses that pulled the milk or fish wagon, but after the mid-60s these images disappeared forever in my hometown. In the 90s on a day trip to Poland at the Baltic Sea I met work horses, a few coaches stood around waiting to transport a few tourists around. Here I did not get the impression that the animals were overly misused or overworked, and it happened in a rural region where people still have a different relationship to animals in their daily lives.

But I can not deny that I was surprised when I first heard about the horse-drawn carriages in New York, I never would have thought it possible that in the 21st century, horses had to pass through exhaust gas contaminated cities. To read now that since June this year already four incidents have happened in which these working horses either collapsed, hurt themselves and in one case actually died, fills me with sadness and anger, certainly these wonderful animals do not belong to downtown New York!

Find here the original article with a video that made me feel ashamed, I did not like the greed of getting the images of the suffering animal, even if it was perhaps done with good intentions.

As to the horses, this time I hope that PETA succeeds, that they get the support to put an end to this kind of business...

'I'm not drunk, I'm not lying, there's a seal in my house'.

Eine Geschichte mit (hoffentlich) gutem Ende ereignete sich dieser Tage in Neuseeland. Eine kleine Robbe hatte offenbar das Vagabundieren für sich entdeckt und war letztendlich nach einer Straßentour via Katzenklappe in einem Haus gelandet, wo es sich auf dem Sofa gemütlich machte.Nach einiger Aufregung der Hauseigentümerin, die kurzzeitig an ihrem Verstand zu zweifeln begann, wurde das abenteuerlustige Tierchen abgeholt und im Hafen ausgesetzt. Auf zu neuen Wegen...!

A savvy seal who crawled out of the sea, along a busy road, up a driveway and through a cat flap was found making himself at home on the sofa by one shocked New Zealand woman.

The pup was found by Bay of Plenty resident Annette Swoffer settling into a cushion, happy among her cats.

She told the New Zealand Herald: "I was in my office and I heard an awful racket down below...I thought the cats have brought a rabbit or something in so I went down and had a look - and there's a seal in my kitchen.

"I thought, I'm hallucinating, this is just wrong." She added: "It looks at me with those huge brown eyes. "It was so cute but I didn't touch it because you don't with wild animals."

Ms Swoffer called the Society for the Protection of Animals (SPA), and said: "They were giggling away and I'm saying, 'I'm not drunk, I'm not lying, there's a seal in my house'."

The SPA contacted the Department of Conservation, who were already on the hunt for a seal spotted along the road near her house, and came to its rescue.

Officials at the department had been called out to save a seal seen on a different road earlier in the day - and believe it was the same one found by Ms Swoffer. The first time, it ended up in a residential garden, scaring elderly residents. Chris Clark, biodiversity programme manager for the Department of Conservation, told the Herald the pup had "obviously just weaned from its mum". With police help, he managed to eventually coax it into a net and then release it into the nearby harbour. Ms Swoffer said the pup was "really friendly" and not aggressive, unusually for a seal.

To celebrate the arrival of Tian Tian and Yang Guang Edinburgh Zoo sent a cuddly panda to all the 'panda babies' born in an Edinburgh hospital on the 4th December 2011. Pictured here are twins Rory and James who both weighed in at just over 5lbs. Both mother and babies are doing very well! :)

"The Panda Express"...

Zwei Riesenpandas, die ersten die seit 17 Jahren in Großbritanien leben werden, sind wohlbehalten in Schottland angekommen. Tian Tian und Yang Guang landeten am Sonntag um 13 Uhr in Edinburgh nach einem Nonstop Flug von China. Das 8 jährigige Bärenpaar soll für 10 Jahre im Edinburgh Zoo eine neue Heimat finden.-

Two giant pandas - the first to live in the UK for 17 years - have arrived in Scotland. Tian Tian and Yang Guang arrived at Edinburgh Airport at 1pm on a specially-chartered non-stop flight from China. The eight-year-old breeding pair are destined for Edinburgh Zoo, which will be their new home for the next 10 years.

Tian Tian, whose name means "sweetie", and Yang Guang, meaning "sunlight", travelled from China on board a Boeing 777F flight dubbed the FedEx "Panda Express", along with a vet and two animal handlers.

Although every flight is unique, this flight has been particularly special - carrying such rare animals made the journey very exciting for all of us."

Die Tiere, die während des Flugs eine Mahlzeit aus Bambus, Äpfeln, Möhren und einen speziellen "Panda-Kuchen" erhielten, wurden am Flughafen von einer großen Medienpräsenz, darunter auch ausländische Journalisten, begrüßt.

Monate der Vorbereitung und Planung waren nötig, um die Reise möglich zu machen. Die Ankunft der Bären markiert auch den Höhepunkt von fünf Jahren an Bemühungen, die Pandas nach Schottland zu bringen.-

The animals, who were given an in-flight meal of bamboo, apples, carrots and a special "panda cake", were greeted at the airport by a large media presence, including foreign journalists.

The company said months of preparation and planning had been involved to make the journey possible. Their arrival also marks the culmination of a five-year effort to bring the giant pandas to Scotland.

Die Bären haben nun zwei Wochen Zeit, um sich an ihr neues Gehege zu gewöhnen, bevor sie Zoobesuchern vorgestellt werden. Natürlich hofft man bei dem Paar auch auf Nachwuchs.-

Zoo Offizielle haben ihre Ankunft als "historische Gelegenheit" beschrieben, sowohl was den Faktor Besucherattraktion angeht, sowie für Großbritannien als Ganzes. Die schottische Regierung und Tourismus-Beamte hoffen, dass die Präsenz der Tiere die Wirtschaft sowie Besucherzahlen im Land ankurbeln werden. Schottische Minister drückten ebenfalls aus, dass das Panda-Darlehen eine "wachsende Freundschaft" zwischen Schottland und China symbolisiert. Prime Minister Alex Salmond ist im Moment in China. Tierschützer haben den Umzug als fragwürdig kritisiert, für sie deute er mehr darauf hin, dass kommerzielle Interessen wahrgenommen werden, als dass es um die Rettung einer bedrohten Tierart gehe.

Sweetie und Sunlight/Sunshine wurden im Jahr 2003 geboren und lebten in der Ya'an Aufzuchtstation in Chengdu, China. Während ihrer Zeit in Edinburgh, sind sie in der Obhut der Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS). Über die online Berichterstattung von den beiden Tieren über 4 versteckte Web-Kameras in ihren Gehegen, erhofft man sich, dass Zuschauer aus der ganzen Welt angezogen werden. Übrigens: 15% des Bambus, das die Pandas verzehren werden, muss vom Edinburgh Zoo selbst angebaut werden, der Rest wird as Amsterdam in den Niederlanden importiert.-

The bears will now have two weeks to settle into their new enclosure before going on display to the public. It is hoped that the pandas will eventually give birth to cubs.

Zoo bosses have described their arrival as a "historic occasion" for the visitor attraction and the UK as a whole. The Scottish Government and tourism officials hope the animals' presence will boost the economy and visitor numbers to the country. Scottish ministers also said the loan of the pandas symbolises a "growing friendship" between Scotland and China. First Minister Alex Salmond is in China at the moment. However animal welfare campaigners have criticised the move, suggesting it has more to do with commercial deals and was not a credible way to go about saving the endangered species.

Sweetie and Sunlight were born in 2003 and lived at the Ya'an reserve in Chengdu, China. During their time in Edinburgh, they will be in the care of the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS). Online footage of the two animals, from four hidden "panda-cams" in their enclosures, is expected to attract viewers from around the world.

Edinburgh Zoo is to grow about 15% of the bamboo needed to feed the giant pandas. The rest of the plant is to be imported from Amsterdam in the Netherlands.

Diesen Artikel gab es gestern bei Ulli J auf Deutsch, ich fand ihn und die Arbeit, die darin steckt, so bemerkenswert, dass ich ihn gleich übersetzt habe. Auch Martina möchte ich Danke sagen, die diese geniale Idee hatte, etwas zu diesem Thema zusammenstellen...

Just in case that you are still looking for a Christmas gift. We've got a suggestion to make. Why not adopt a polar bear? The World Wild Life Fund For Nature, one of the world's largest international conservation organizations, offers in different countries the possibility to donate money for the protection of polar bears via adoption.

Der WWF Russland hat sich das Ziel gesetzt für 500 Eisbären Adoptiveltern zu finden. Die Adoption eines Eisbären kostet 30.000 Rubel, das sind rund 723 Euro. Als Dank erhält der Spender eine Urkunde des WWF und einen Eisbären aus Pappmaché. Man wendet sich auch speziell an Firmen, deren Firmenlogo, wenn sie sich an dieser Aktion beteiligen, auf den WWF Internetseite platziert wird und deren Engagement in den entsprechenden Publikationen des WWF Russland Erwähnung findet. Wer mehr als 25 Eisbären adoptiert, wird zum offiziellen Partner des WWF Arktis Programms. Zu den ersten Unternehmungen die sich an der Aktion beteiligten gehörte CocaCola, die gleich 50 Eisbären adoptierten. Der Softdrinkhersteller unterstützt schon seit Jahren den WWF in vielen Ländern und hat sich in diesem Jahr besonders der Eisbären angenommen.-

Doch für die meisten Menschen dürften 723 Euro eine zu hohe Summe sein. Aber es geht auch preiswerter.In der Schweiz kann man einen Eisbären bereits für 80 Schweizer Franken – 65 Euro – adoptieren. Man erhält dann eine Geschenkkarte, auf der man den Namen desjenigen eintragen kann, den man mit der Adoption zu Weihnachten beschenken möchte und eine DVD, auf der man einen Kurzfilm über die Welt der Arktis, einen Steckbrief mit Informationen über die Eisbären, eine Foto-Galerie mit eindrücklichen Bildern und Bildschirmhintergründe zum Herunterladen findet. Einen Haken hat die Sache allerdings, man braucht eine Adresse in der Schweiz, weil der WWF Schweiz keinen Versand ins Ausland anbietet.-

But there are other possibilities. In the Netherlands, "CRUSH", a cute stuffed animal, is waiting for noble donors, who decide to adopt a polar bear for Christmas or to offer an adoption as gift. Here the adoption costs € 35, and beside the stuffed animal one will receive too a certificate of adoption and a brochure with information about the polar bears and their threatened habitat.

In Frankreich kann man für 39,90 Euro die Eisbärin „Théodora“ adoptieren. Sie ist 24 Jahre alt und lebt in der Beaufortsee vor der Küste Alaskas. Natürlich bekommen auch die Adoptiveltern von „Théodora“ eine Urkunde und ein Stofftier, das dem niederländischen „Knuffel“ sehr ähnlich sieht. Außerdem noch zwei Poster und eine Broschüre über die Maßnahmen, die der WWF mit dem Geld aus den Adoptionen durchführt. In den USA kann man von 25 US Dollar ab eine Patenschaft für einen Eisbären übernehmen und in Kanada kostet eine Patenschaft 40 Kanadische Dollar.-

In France one can adopt polar bear "Theodora", just for € 39,90. "Theodora" is 24 years old and lives in the Beaufort Sea off the coast of Alaska. Of course, the adoptive parents will be given a certificate and a stuffed animal, which by the way, looks very similar to the Dutch "CRUSH". In addition, two posters and a brochure on the activities of the WWF carried out with the money raised with the adoptions. In the U.S. you can sponsor a polar bear already at US$ 25 and onwards, while in Canada it will start at 40 Canadian Dollar.

Natürlich kann man die Spende von der Steuer absetzen.-

In Germany and Great Britain, the WWF chooses a different path. Instead of a one-time donation one can sponsor a polar bear on a regular monthly basis, either for at least € 30 or ₤ 5. Twice a year the sponsors in Germany will then receive a report on the operations of the WWF, an adoption certificate, four times a year the WWF magazine for members and a stuffed polar bear. Of course you can deduct the donation from your taxes. -

Schon lange kann man bei Polar Bears International einen Eisbären adoptieren. Schon für eine Spende von $30 kann man Pate eines Eisbären werden und erhält eine Patenschaftsurkunde. Wer mehr Geld spenden möchte, erhält auch noch ein Plüschtier als Dankeschön, das umso größer wird je großzügiger der Eisbärenpate ist.-

Unser Freund David Booth war dieses Jahr früher als früh, als er mir seinen diesjährigen Erinnerungscartoon zur Weihnachtszeit schon am 21.11. aus Alaska schickte, man muss sich das einfach mal vorstellen, schon vor Thanksgiving, was prompt dazu führte, dass ich dieses Jahr Thanksgiving komplett verschwitzt habe...-

Liebe Erika,

Heute habe ich erfahren, dass du seit gestern nicht mehr unter uns bist, und das ganz plötzlich, nachdem es ein paar Tage hieß, dass es dir wieder etwas besser gehen würde. Du warst im Krankenhaus wegen deines Herzens, das dir schon eine ganze Weile Last gemacht hat, und erst vor wenigen Tagen wurdest du mit der Perspektive auf einen Operationstermin nach Weihnachten entlassen. Du hattest dich gefreut an den kommenden Festtagen bei deinen beiden Söhnen sein zu können, und wir freuten uns, dass du dich gemeldet hast, wie eigentlich fast immer, mit einer neuen Collage im Gepäck...

Du hast mit deinen Mitteln immer versucht uns zu beschenken, deine Liebe für Knut hat viele Brücken geschlagen, ist in jeder deiner Collagen so spürbar und die Anlässe, die Momente,wo du sie mit uns geteilt hast, waren mehr als einmal Ausdruck deines Dankes an die, die deine Liebe zu Knut teilten. Kaum ein Geburtstag oder ein Festtag an dem du nicht etwas gezaubert hast.Kaum eine e-mail, die nicht begleitet war von einer deiner persönlichen Arbeiten, und in jeder Mail, warst du es, die sich bedankt hat...

Nach Hartmuths Tod schriebst du mir, wie wichtig dir Knuts Aussenposten sei, dass er immer bestehen bleiben soll, die Dringlichkeit hätte mich vielleicht anders aufhorchen lassen müssen... Ich will dir jetzt sagen, wie sehr mich dein Satz an mich im Juni berührt hat, wann immer ich in Erwägung gezogen habe zu pausieren, und das war mehr als einmal, war er gegenwärtig und führte dazu, dass ich weitermachte, wenn auch oft mit halber Flamme.

Du hast dein Herz immer weit aufgemacht, die Krankheit und der Tod deines Mannes im August vor 2 Jahren haben dich nicht abgehalten, immer weiter zu geben, ich wünschte, wir hätten dir etwas mehr an Kraft für dein Herz zurückgeben können, vor allem in der Zeit nach dem Tod deines Mannes und dem Tod von Knut, der dir immer Kraft und Freude vermittelt hat.

Mit diesem Satz, den du, für die Freunde und Sterne eine große Bedeutung hatten, mir am 14.Juni geschrieben hast, möchte ich hier enden, nicht ohne mich bei dir für die Einfachheit deiner Botschaften zu bedanken.

Deinen Söhnen Dennis und Oliver und allen, denen du fehlst, wünsche ich viel Kraft in diesen schweren Tagen.

Der Granatbarsch lebt in tiefem, kaltem Wasser und hat aufgrund dieser extremen Lebensbedingungen einen sehr langsamen Stoffwechsel. Der älteste Granatbarsch, der jemals gefangen wurde, war 149 Jahre alt. Da diese Tiere erst mit etwa 30 Jahren und mehr geschlechtsreif werden, dauert es sehr lange, bis sich die Population nach übermäßiger Befischung wieder erholen kann, wodurch der weltweite Bestand schon stark dezimiert wurde. When I looked for the oldest fish I found first an article stating that the oldest ever caught was an Orange Roughy, a perch species, of 149 years. This species, living in deep cold waters responsible for a very slowly metabolism, is said to become only sexually mature at 30 years which makes it difficult for the species to recover from overexploitation, the world population has been decreased dramatically.

Hanako gehärte mehreren Personen, der letzte war Dr. Komei Koshihara. Es gibt ein Zitat eines Wissenschaftlers, Herr Masayuki Amano, besagend:

"Diese 'Hanako" ist in noch einwandfreiem Zustand und schwimmt majestätisch in einer ruhigen Schlucht, die unweit vom Mt. Ontake (nahe Nagoya) hinabgeht. Sie wiegt 7,5 Kilogramm und ist 70 Zentimeter (ca. 30 cm) lang. Sie und ich sind die liebsten Freunde. Wenn ich sie rufe: "Hanako! Hanako! " kommt sie ohne zu Zögern vom Rand des Teiches zu meinen Füßen geschwommen. Wenn ich ihr leicht über den Kopf streichel, sieht sie ganz vergnügt aus. Manchmal gehe ich so weit, sie aus dem Wasser zu nehmen und sie zu umarmen. "-

Hanako was owned by several individuals, the last of whom was Dr. Komei Koshihara.

Once a scientist was quoted, Mr. Masayuki Amano, who said, “This ‘Hanako’ is still in perfect condition and swimming about majestically in a quiet ravine descending Mt. Ontake (near Nagoya) in a short distance. She weighs 7.5 kilograms and is 70 centimeters (roughly 30 in.) in length. She and I are dearest friends. When I call her saying “Hanako! Hanako!” from the brink of the pond, she unhesitatingly comes swimming to my feet. If I lightly pat her on the head, she looks quite delighted. Sometimes I go so far as to take her out of the water and embrace her.”

Koi können sehr alt werden. Wenn die Wasserparameter und Teichhygiene stimmen, werden sie bei guter Haltung durchschnittlich 50 bis 70 Jahre alt. Oftmals erreichen Koi jedoch wegen schlechter Teichbedingungen keine 10 Jahre. Vereinzelte Exemplare können ein noch weitaus höheres Alter erreichen. Die maximale Lebenserwartung liegt bei über 200 Jahren.

Eine Hauptrolle spielt der Koi in Doris Dörries Spielfilm Der Fischer und seine Frau (2004).

In "Columbo Likes the Nightlife" (deutscher Titel "Die letzte Party") (2003) liefern Koi den wesentlichen Hinweis auf den Verbleib der Leiche.

It is very interesting to think that during the long years that this carp has continued to live, a country by the name of the United States of America came into existence and has built up her present culture of high standard."

"The life length of all living things has been allotted by God, and humanity cannot do anything about it. Such large animals as cows and horses can live 30 to 40 years at the most, while so small an animal as a carp has a life span say 60 years, and very rarely he can live till he is one hundred years old.

It is said that the life of all living things is sustained by lipoid, nucleic acid and protein that are contained in each of their cells. These are called under the generic name "essence of life." If so, I should think we should analyze the cells of a carp that can live so long, to know how much lipoid, nucleic acid and protein, the essential components of the body, are contained in them and what property these essences have. Then we may probably be able to recompose the cells of the human body in the fashion of a carp's cells. When the research is completed, it will become possible for human beings to live as long as 200 years. This is the age in which man is not only trying to bring about a nuclear revolution by the development of atomic energy but aspining to travel through the vast space by means of rockets.

I should heartily desire that man should put an end to his crazy attempt to destroy humanity by atomic explosion and should devote himself to the revolutionary feat of extending human life, after the example of the First Emperor of the ancient Shin Dynasty, instead of being absorbed in the vain attempt to reach the moon."

Chikara (bluish black) - 155 years old; born in 10th year of Bunka (A.D. 1813); in the same year Kumpei Gamo died, Stevenson invented the steam engine, and in the following year Bakin takizawa published "Nanso Satomi Hakken-den".
Satoru (white with black spots on back) - 151 years old; born in 14th year of Bunka (A.D. 1917); in the same year an English ship visited the port of Uraga. Death of Gempaku Sugita.
Santa (black with an indented scar on the face) - 141 years old; born in the 10th year of Bunsei (A.D. 1827); in the same year Sanyo Rai published "Nihon Gaishi". Great Fire of Yedo in the following year.
Yuki (white) - 141 years old; born in the same year as "Santa".

"Harriet hat viel erlebt: Sie ist zweimal ausgewandert, immer wieder umgezogen und fuhr mit dem Begründer der Evolutionstheorie über den Ozean. Mehr als 130 Jahre wurde sie für einen Mann gehalten -
Szenen aus dem Leben einer uralten Riesenschildkröte.

Der Hals ist runzlig, die Bewegungen sind langsam, in den Mundwinkeln kleben Essensreste - Harriet ist nicht mehr die Jüngste. Im Gegenteil: Sie wird heute 175 Jahre alt. Harriet ist eine Galapagos-Riesenschildkröte, und auch wenn ihre Art bekannt dafür ist, ein hohes Alter zu erreichen, hält Harriet zurzeit den Rekord. Sie gilt als das älteste lebende Tier der Welt. Älter wurde den Aufzeichnungen zufolge nur ein Artgenosse, der dem König von Tonga gehört haben soll und 188 Jahre alt wurde.

Die Schildkröte schlüpfte 1830 auf einer der Galapagos-Inseln vor der Küste Ecuadors. Fünf Jahre später - Harriet war gerade so groß wie ein Teller - entdeckte der englische Forscher Charles Darwin das Tier.

Die Riesenschildkröten faszinierten ihn, und er nahm drei Exemplare mit auf sein Schiff "Beagle". Die drei Schildkröten wurden Dick, Tom und Harry getauft - erst sehr viel später stellte sich heraus, dass es sich bei "Harry" um eine Dame handelte. Darwin, der Begründer der Evolutionstheorie, brachte die Tiere zu Forschungszwecken nach England. Weil sich die Schildkröten in der ungewohnt kalten und dunklen Umgebung nicht wohlfühlten, ließ Darwin sie 1837 nach Australien verschiffen. Fünf Jahre später, im zarten Alter von zwölf Jahren, fand Harriet im Botanischen Garten in Brisbane ein neues Zuhause. Dick starb bereits in den achtziger Jahren des 19. Jahrhunderts, Tom verschied 1949.

Die folgenden hundert Jahre verbrachte Harriet, noch immer für ein Männchen gehalten, unter dem Namen "Harry" in Australien. Mehrere Jahrzehnte steckten Tierpfleger weibliche Artgenossen in Harriets Gehege, in der Hoffnung auf Nachwuchs - vergebens. Als der Tierpark des Botanischen Gartens 1952 seine Pforten schloss, musste Harriet in ein Naturschutzgebiet an Australiens Goldküste umziehen. Dort fand 1960 ein Zoodirektor aus Hawaii endlich die Wahrheit heraus: "Harry" ist ein Mädchen. Das Tier wurde flugs auf den Namen Harriet umgetauft - im Alter von 130 Jahren.

Seit 1988 nun wohnt die alte Dame in einem Zoo in Brisbane. Zum Geburtstag gab es für Harriet einen Kuchen und ihr Lieblingsfrühstück: rosa Hibiskusblüten. Ansonsten ernährt sich die Greisin, die inzwischen die Größe eines Esstisches erreicht hat, von Auberginen, Zucchini, Möhren, Tomaten und anderem Grünzeug.

Harriets Pfleger Richard Jackson bemüht sich, seinem Schützling eine altersgerechte Umgebung zu bieten. Sollte die Schildkröte frieren, kann sie sich in eine eigens für sie angefertigte Höhle zurückziehen - mit eingebautem Heizkissen. Bislang allerdings weigert sich Harriet, derartige Seniorenhätscheleien anzunehmen: Sie schläft draußen, und das seit 175 Jahren."

Okay, die Sache mit Herrn Darwin soll sich anders zugetragen haben.

"Die Aufsammlung dieser Schildkröte durch Charles Darwin erscheint jedoch äußerst unwahrscheinlich, da Harriet anhand der mitochondrialen DNA eindeutig als Geochelone nigra porteri identifiziert werden konnte. Diese Unterart ist ausschließlich auf Santa Cruz zu finden – einer Insel des Galápagos-Archipels, die Darwin nie betreten hat. Bestätigt werden konnte aber das hohe Alter der Schildkröte, die laut der wissenschaftlichen Untersuchung vor 1850 geschlüpft sein muss.

Harriet was a Galápagos tortoise (Geochelone nigra porteri) who had an estimated age of 175 years at the time of her death in Australia. Harriet was the third oldest tortoise ever authenticated, behind Tu'i Malila, who died in 1965 at the age of 188, and Adwaita, who died in 2006 at the estimated age of 255.

She was reportedly collected by Charles Darwin during his 1835 visit to the Galápagos Islands as part of his round-the-world survey expedition, transported to England, and then brought to her final home, Australia, by a retiring captain of the Beagle. However, some doubt was cast on this story by the fact that Darwin had never visited the island that Harriet originally came from.

That the subspecies Harriet represents was not from one of the islands visited by Darwin is not actually problematic. Darwin definitely collected tortoises on San Cristobal, San Salvadore, and Santa Maria; however, the subspecies on Santa Maria (G. n. nigra) was, in fact, already nearing extinction when Darwin visited the islands, having been killed and eaten by prisoners on the prison colony there. Yet Darwin still collected tortoises on Santa Maria: the tortoises he found had been retrieved by the prisoners from other islands for food and Darwin collected some of these before they reached the stewpot. Hence they were a mixture of subspecies from a number of islands. Harriet, as a G. n. porteri, is from Santa Cruz. One of the other tortoises (Tom) is still in the Queensland Museum and has been identified as a G. n. chathamensis (from San Cristobal).
It is thought that as many as 40 tortoises were stowed aboard the Beagle.

In 1842, Harriet was brought by Captain Wickham to Australia.While some documents of her long history have been lost in fires, Harriet lived in the Brisbane Botanical Gardens and Fleay's Animal Park before making the Queensland Reptile Park home in 1988.

Harriet was thought to be male for many years and was actually named Harry after Harry Oakman, the creator of the zoo at the Brisbane Botanic Gardens, but this was corrected in the 1960s by a visiting director of Hawaii's Honolulu Zoo. (As it happens, Tom, the specimen in the Queensland Museum, was also a female.)

Although the Australia Zoo was not sure of the exact day of Harriet's birth...:), they always celebrated it around November 15, because that's when she arrived at the zoo in 1988.

Harriet galt als ausgesprochen gutmütige Vertreterin ihrer Art. Sie liebte die Aufmerksamkeit der Menschen und genoss es, gestreichelt zu werden. Harriet verbrachte einen Großteil ihrer Zeit damit an ihrem Teich zu ruhen. Ihr Lieblingsessen waren Rosenblätter und Hibiskusblüten, die sie gerne auch aus dem Mund ihrer Tierpflegerin entgegennahm.-

Harriet was said to be very good-natured. She loved the attention of humans and enjoyed it when people patted her on the scute. Harriet spent a majority of her day napping at her home pond. Her favourite food were rose petals and hibiscus flowers, sometimes directly from the mouth of her keeper.

Ihren 172. Geburtstag feierte sie mit einem kleinen Besucher auf dem Rücken...-

Eidechsen und Vögel liebten es auf Harriets Panzer Sonnenbäder einzunehmen. Wer glaubt, dass Schildkröten das nicht mitkriegen, irrt. Harriet wusste immer, wenn sie Besuch hatte. Schildkröten haben eine Hautschicht mit Nervenenden am Panzer. -

She was a highly desirable sunning rock for lizards and birds. She knew they were there because a tortoise has a layer of skin with nerve endings on its shell, but doesn’t mind at all.

And that was Harriet's last birthday party, unfortunately Harriet passed away peacefully at Australia Zoo on 23 June 2006, leaving behind countless admirers and an impressive and unforgettable life story. For a long time she was considered as oldest living creature on land, only two other giant tortoises had lived longer. But to them we will come later in a separate post ...

And now surprise, surprise

That is Jonathan, still alive and kicking and that at age 178!!!

Doch hier nun als Extra-Überraschung die noch heute lebende älteste Schildkröte der Welt,
ich fand sie während des Schreibens...))-
Sie heißt Jonathan, ist 178 Jahre alt und ist männlichen Geschlechts.

"Eine Fotografie aus der Zeit des Burenkriegs konnte dabei helfen, die älteste Schildkröte der Welt zu identifizieren. Sie heißt Jonathan und lebt auf der Insel St. Helena im Südatlantik.

Das Schwarz-Weiß-Foto, das auf einer Auktion kürzlich für 4600 Euro den Besitzer wechselte, zeigt Jonathan mit einem Gefangenen des Burenkriegs (1899-1902). Wie die Zeitung "The Telegraph" berichtet, ergaben Nachforschungen, dass die Schildkröte auf dem Bild noch immer lebt.

Jonathan war 1882 auf die Insel gebracht worden und damals schon mindestens 50 Jahre alt. Knapp 20 Jahre später entstand das Foto. Heute ist Jonathan mindestens 178 Jahre alt und damit die älteste Schildkröte der Welt.

Wenn auch auf einem Auge blind, sei Jonathan noch immer aktiv, teilte ein Sprecher der Tourismusbehörde St. Helenas mit, er liebe die Aufmerksamkeit und sei ein "echter Angeber"."

Dieser Satz bezieht sich wohl auf die Tatsache, dass Jonathan immer noch nicht lendenlahm (sagt man das bei Schildkröten überhaupt?) ist, Emma, Fredricka und Myrtle, die 3 Damen mit dnenen er u.a. lebt, dürften davon ein Lied singen können....Leider habe ich keine Fotos von Geburtstagsparties gefunden...Aber, was macht das schon...!-

The world’s oldest living animal has been recognized as a 178-year-old tortoise – Jonathan.

Jonathan was photographed during the Boer War around 1900 when he was 70, and now his life has spanned eight British monarchs from George IV to Elizabeth II, and 50 prime ministers.The snap was taken on the South Atlantic island of St Helena, where Jonathan still lives, along with five other tortoises David, Speedy, Emma, Fredricka and Myrtle in a plantation. But his old age has certainly not dented his spirit as he still has the energy to regularly mate with the three much younger females.

A spokesman for the island’s tourist board said that St Helena government owns Jonathan and he lives in the specially built plantation on the governor’s land, feeding on the grass of the main paddock.

“Jonathan is the sole survivor of three tortoises that arrived on St Helena Island in 1882,” the Telegraph quoted him as saying. “He was already mature when he arrived and was at least 50-years-old.Therefore his minimum age is 178-years-old. He is the oldest inhabitant on St Helena and is claimed to be the oldest living tortoise in the world.

“Apparently he remained nameless for the most part of his residence in St Helena until he was named by Governor Sir Spencer Davis in the 1930s.

“Jonathan is still very active despite his age and adores attention, he is a real poser. He seems to be sightless in one eye, but does not let that slow him down. It is thought Jonathan, from the species Testudinipae cytodira, was brought to St Helena from the Seychelles as a mature adult in 1882."

Happy Birthday to all who have, have had or will celebrate their birthdays, maybe it's not such a too bad idea to slow somehow down and see what's happening then,
just to give you an idea, a tortoise moves with 0.27 km/per hour...

Dies ist ein Denkmal zu Ehren von Frank Zappa. Sie werden sich nun fragen, Frank Zappa???Was hat denn er mit Knut am Hut??? Um ehrlich zu sein, ich glaube, eigentlich so gar nichts, er war schon lange tot, als Knut lebte und bis auf ein Lied, das immerhin im arktischen Norden spielt und eine Trapperbegegnung mit einem Eskimo namens Nanook zum Inhalt hat, gibt es nichts, was auch nur entfernt mit Eisbären zu tun hätte, ich habe noch nicht einmal ein Foto eines Zoobesuchs gefunden, wo er im Hintergrund mit einem Eisbären zu sehen gewesen wäre..:)) -

This is a memorial bust in honor of Frank Zappa. You may ask now, Frank Zappa? What the heck has he to do with Knut? To be honest, I think, really absolutely nothing, he was long dead by the time Knut was born, and apart from one song featuring a trapper encounter with an Eskimo named Nanook in the Arctic, there is nothing which even remotely is about polar bears - I have not even found a photo of a zoo visit showing Zappa with a polar bear in the background..:))

Ich hatte lediglich die Wahl zwischen Zappa mit Katze oder Zappa mit Papagei, was immer noch nicht erklärt, was er hier eigentlich zu suchen hat...-

I only had the choice between Zappa with cat or Zappa with parrot, which still does not explain what he's doing here ...

Ich mache es kurz, Zappa hat es geschafft, dass nach ihm nicht nur ein Denkmal benannt wurde, es gibt gleich mehrere, die Schnellsten waren die Letten mit einer Bronzebüste 1995 in Vilnius, eine Replik davon steht seit 2008 auch in Baltimore, Zappas Heimatstadt, wo Bürgermeisterin Sheila Dixon gleich noch den 9. August zum Zappa-Tag erklärt hat (Man beachte:14 Jahre nach seinem Tod!), eine weitere Skulptur steht seit 2002 in Bad Doberan. Aber damit nicht genug, ich glaube, er ist der einzige, der gleich mehrfach unsterblich gemacht wurde in dem man nach ihm wissenschaftliche Entdeckungen benannt hat. Zum Teil zu Lebzeiten, zum Teil nach seinem Tod.Dies ist auch anderen Musikern gelungen, jedoch nicht in der Häufung.-

I will keep it brief, Zappa managed to get himself not only one monument, there are several, the Lithunians were the quickest with a bust in Vilnius in 1995, one sculpture in Bad Doberan/Germany was erected in 2002, and a replica of the Lithunian bronze bust was offered to Baltimore in 2008, his hometown, where by the way, even the 9th August had been declared a Zappa-day by mayor Sheila Dixon (Note: 14 years after his death!)... But that's not enough, I think he is the only one who has been made immortal by scientists of various fields who named new discoveries after him. Partly while he was alive and partly after his death. You may say that other celebrities have achieved this kind of honour too, which is true, but I haven't found anyone else who made it kind of that often...

Amaurotoma zappa, you see, lived and died some 300 million years ago in the mountains of Clark County, Nevada, about 60 miles north east of Las Vegas. It was found and identified in 1967 by paleontologist Leo P. Plas, Jr. and named Amaurotoma zappa with the motivation that, "The specific name, zappa, honors Frank Zappa". (more)

In den 80ern kam dann ein lebendes Lebewesen hinzu, der Fisch „Zappa confluentus“, der von dem Biologen Ed Murdy nach Zappa benannt wurde.-

In the 1980s, biologist Ed Murdy named a monotypic genus of mudskipper gobiid fishes of New Guinea Zappa, with a species named Zappa confluentus, in fact a living creature this time and not extinct, "for his articulate and sagacious defense of the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution". (more)

Besonders berühmt wurde die Qualle „Phialella zappa“, sein Namensgeber schaffte es in der Tat darüber mit Zappa in Verbindung zu treten, Zappa selbst war so gerührt, dass er gleich ein ganzes Konzert dieser Qualle und seinem Finder widmete...-

Italian Biologist Ferdinando Boero named a Californian jellyfish Phialella zappai (1987), noting that he had "pleasure in naming this species after the modern music composer"whom he managed not only to meet in person, he and his jellyfish made it even into one of Zappa's last rock concerts, which is a story on its own... Und eine Spinne : „Pachygnatha zappa“- eindeutig die Kreatur nicht nur mit den meisten Beinen, sondern auch mit der größten physischen Ähnlichkeit zu ihrem Namensvetter, hier stand u.a. eine schwarze Stelle unter dem Abdomen des Weibchens Pate, die auffällig an Zappas Bart erinnert...-

Belgian biologists Bosmans and Bosselaers discovered in the early 1980s a Cameroonese orb-weaver spider, which they in 1994 named Pachygnatha zappa because "the ventral side of the abdomen of the female of this species strikingly resembles the artist's legendary moustache". (more)

Damit nicht genug, denn es gibt ja auch noch Bakterien, wie z.B. das Gen „ZapA Proteus mirabilis“, in diesem Fall eines, das Infektionen im Urianltrakt hervorrufen kann...-

In 1995 a gene of the bacterium Proteus mirabilis that causes urinary tract infections was named zapA by three biologists from Maryland. In their scientific article, they "especially thank the late Frank Zappa for inspiration and assistance with genetic nomenclature". (more)

1994 kam dann noch ein Asteroid hinzu, „(3834) Zappafrank“, der zwischen Mars und Jupiter die Sonne umkreist, sein tschechischer Entdecker weist auf die Bedeutung Zappas als Symbol für Demokratie und Freiheit hin, die Zappa für viele Menschen in seinem Heimatland hatte. Ähnlich begründen auch die Entdecker eines Fossils in den späten 90ern ihre Namensgebung mit Spygori zappania. -

In 1994, lobbying efforts initiated by psychiatrist John Scialli led the International Astronomical Union's Minor Planet Center to name an asteroid in Zappa's honor: 3834 Zappafrank. The asteroid was discovered in 1980 by Czechoslovakian astronomer Ladislav Brozek, and the citation for its naming says that "Zappa was an eclectic, self-trained artist and composer ... Before 1989 he was regarded as a symbol of democracy and freedom by many people in Czechoslovakia". (more)

A similar approach can be noted concerning Spygori zappania, a metazoan fossil, discovered by American paleontologists Marc Salak and Halard L. Lescinsky in the late 1990 who named it after FZ to honor "the late Frank Zappa ... whose mission paralleled that of the earliest paleontologists: to challenge conventional and traditional beliefs when such beliefs lacked roots in logic and reason".

Freak Out - Die Zappa-Straße in Marzahn

Und wer sich fragt, ob es denn vielleicht auch eine Straße gibt: Im Berliner Bezirk Marzahn-Hellersdorf wurde am 28. Juli 2007 auf Initiative des Vereins ORWOhaus und auf Antrag der Partei Die Linke die 400 Meter lange „Straße 13“ nach Zappa benannt, die weltweit einzige Frank-Zappa-Straße. In der Straße steht ein Gebäude, das früher vom Filmhersteller ORWO genutzt wurde und in dem heute mehr als 150 Bands ihre Proberäume haben.-

And at the initiative of musicians community ORWOhaus, Berlin has named a street honoring the musician in 2007. Frank-Zappa-Strasse or Frank Zappa Street, formerly Street 13, lies on the eastern outskirts of Berlin amid empty industrial buildings in what was communist East Germany.(more)

Übrigens: wer glaubt, es gäbe wenigstens keine Zappa Briefmarken, der täuscht sich sehr, das kleine Land Udmurtia, und Eisbäreninsidern durchaus ein Begriff, hat 2002 gleich eine ganze Serie herausgebracht, inklusive Ersttagsbriefe...-

By the way, who thinks that Zappa hadn't at least be honoured by stamps is mistaken, the small country Udmurtia, known well by polar bear insiders, issued in 2002 a whole series including First Day Covers...

Knut Memorial...Denkmalbewegung

"Der im März verstorbene beliebte Zoo-Eisbär Knut soll ein Denkmal bekommen. Dafür haben die Gemeinschaft der Förderer von Tierpark Berlin und Zoo Berlin in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Zoo einen Ideenwettbewerb ausgeschrieben, wie ein Sprecher der Förderer am Dienstag mitteilte. Ideen zur Gestaltung einer Bronzeskulptur können bis 20. Dezember eingereicht werden. Die Skulptur soll den jungen Knut in Lebensgröße darstellen.

Für die Finanzierung der Skulptur werden noch Spenden gesucht. Auch an andere beliebte Tiere des Berliner Zoos erinnern Denkmäler, unter anderem an den Gorilla Bobby und das Flusspferd Knautschke."

The popular polar bear Knut who died in March is to get a memorial. The Association of friends and supporters of Berlin Zoo and Tierpark" in Berlin has announced a competition of ideas, as a spokesman for the promoters said Tuesday. Ideas for the design of a bronze sculpture can be submitted until 20 December. The sculpture will represent the young Knut in life size. For the financing of the sculpture the zoo is still looking for donations. With this sculpture the zoo will continue a tradition, other popular animals at Berlin Zoo are remembered by monuments, like Gorilla Bobby and hippopotamus Knautschke.
