Diese Dame hier ist Barbara, eine Berühmtheit des London Zoos von anno dazumal.-
This lady here is Barbara, a celebrity in the old times at London Zoo.

Um ehrlich zu sein, bei den beiden Fotos oben weiß ich nicht genau, ob es sich um eine 2. Barbara handelt oder immer noch um Nr. 1, wie auch immer, sollte es eine zweite Barbara gegeben haben, dann war sie ganz klar auch berühmt...-

To be honest, I am not that sure if the pics above show really the very first Barbara or already a successor of a Barbara No.1, however, if there had been two Barbaras then the second one was famous too...

War die Barbara von 1936 für ihre sorgsame Morgentoilette bekannt, so schrieb sich die frühe Barbara mit kleinen Extratouren ins Zoologbuch. So ist überliefert, dass sie 1905 gemeinsam mit ihrem Göttergatten Sam mal eben das Schloss ihres Geheges durchbass um sich einen kleinen Zoospaziergang zu genehmigen. Ein verschreckter Wärter sah die beiden und machte ihrem Spaß mit einer heruntergelassenen Holzplanke, mit deren Hilfe er sie zurück in ihr Gehege trieb, ein Ende.-

As the Barbara of 1936 was well-known for her careful morning toilet, so the early Barbara made her entry in the zoo logbook with little extratours, together with her hubby Sam.

"In 1905 two polar bears Sam and Barbara escaped from their enclosure after biting the padlock off a gate but were frightened back inside after a startled keeper dropped a plank of wood when he found them wandering the park." (Source)

An anderere Stelle kann man erfahren, dass es auch Nachwuchs gab. Vier mal sogar, die beiden ersten wurden von Barbara nicht angenommen und vernachlässigt, 1913 gab es Zwillinge, die nach 2 Tagen an Lungenentzündung starben.-

There had also been some offspring:

"Several little baby Polar Bears have been born in captivity, but, for some reason or other, they did not live long. Barbara, the well-known Polar Bear in the London Zoo, has had several little cubs. The first one was neglected by its mother, and so was the second ; but in 1913, two little cubs were born, and these lived for two days and then died from pneumonia." (source:Portaits at the zoo)

Und nun zum Ursprung meiner Verwirrung bezüglich der Anzahl von Barbaras im London Zoo.
Bei British Pathé kann man einen kurzen Wochenschau-Clip abrufen, der im Titel den Tod von Barbara vermeldet, und das schon im Februar 1923...-

And now to the origin of my confusion concerning the number of Barbaras at London Zoo, at British Pathé one can find a short clip, announcing Barabara's death already in February 1923...

"BARBARA - DEAD! Zoo visitors will miss the famous Polar bear who was everybody's favourite."

The clip shows Sam and Barbara walking by the side of the pool in the zoo, eating, and being watched by the crowds.

Einen ganz anderen Todestag findet man im Archiv vom Daily Mirror, hier ist es die Ausgabe vom 09.03.1937, wo man lesen kann, dass Barbara, der Stolz des Zoos, gestorben ist. -

A very different day of death one can find in the Daily Mirror archive, there, in the edition dated 9 March 1937, it reads that, Barbara, the pride of the zoo had died.

Was Sam betrifft, so erfolgte sein Tod im Jahr 1925, er wurde bei Sonnenaufgang vom Wärter Panning erschossen(!), nachdem er wohl kränkelte. Auch hiervon gibt es einen Clip, keine Sorge, er zeigt nicht, wie Sam erschossen wird, sondern wie auf seinen Tod reagiert wird...-

As to Sam, his death is recorded for the year of 1925...

"The Tragedy of Sam" is called this clip from 1925 about the end of Barbara's hubby Sam "who was, as the caption bluntly puts it, 'shot at dawn to end his infirmities' after 24 years as one of the zoo's most popular attractions. This Topical Budget newsreel isn't so indelicate as to show the actual death - instead, it shows assorted and children reacting to the news." (Michael Brooke)

Übrigens, es gab später zumindest noch eine Barbara. Sie kam aus Budapest und hat mit einem gewissen Rudi einmal Nachwuchs gehabt, Lady, die nun seit April diesen Jahres in Kolind ist.Diese Barbara lebte von 1972 bis 1991, wurde also 19 Jahre alt. Leider habe ich von dieser Barbara kein Foto finden können. Trotz aller Unklarheiten und vieler offener Fragen, den heute lebenden Barbaras, vor allem einer, wünsche ich an dieser einfach alles Gute, ob mit oder ohne Sam oder Rudi!-

By the way, much later there was at least another Barbara. She came from Budapest and had one female cub with her mate Rudi , Lady, now living in Kolind since April of this year. The Hungarian Barbara lived from 1972 to 1991, so she died at age 19. Unfortunately I couldn't find any photos of her. Despite of the confusion and all open questions, I would like to take the occasion to wish all the best to all Barbaras alive today, especially one in particular, no matter if either with or without a Sam or a Rudi by their side...!
