Arctic Summer Tales 2011...Cliffhanger Part 2

Letztes Jahr habe ich ein paar Beiträge zum Thema Arktischer Sommer gepostet, dies bietet sich dieses Jahr wieder an, es gibt eine Reihe Artikel und Fotos, in denen es um Bären in diesem Sommer geht. Beginnen möchte ich mit diesen Fotos, die mich sofort an letztes Jahr erinnert haben, die gleichen Protagonisten, nur ein anderer Ort....-

Last year I posted some articles on the topic Arctic Summer, I will follow this tradition as there are new articles and photos featuring bears in the wild during this summer. And off we go with stunning photos reminding me on a similar event in Canada last year with the same protagonists, just the location has changed...

The bear who dared:

"Es war ein wirklich schöner Ort, sehr neblig, kühl und ruhig mit einem Himmel voll von kreischenden Seevögeln. Wir umrundeten eine Ecke und plötzlich sahen wir einen weißen Klecks hoch oben auf einer Klippe. Die Klippen waren mindestens so hoch wie ein 5 stöckiges Gebäude. Zuerst dachten wir es sei ein großer Vogel oder ein Flecken Schnee, aber als wir näher kamen erkannten wir, dass es ein Eisbär war."-

Describing the moment the passengers realised they were seeing a bear on the cliff on one of the Ostrova Oranskie islands, Mr Coker, ..., said: ‘It was a really beautiful place ; very foggy, cool, and serene with a sky full of squawking birds.‘We rounded a corner and suddenly we could see this white blob at the top of some cliffs.‘The cliffs were at least as high as a five-storey building. At first we thought it might be a large bird or a snow patch but as we got nearer we realised it was a polar bear.‘

DieVögel, die auf prekären Klippen nisten, hätten wohl zuallerletzt mit einem massigen, felsenerkletternden Eisbären als Besucher gerechnet. Und doch, so ein sperriges Tier hat es irgendwie geschafft, einen schroffen Abhang im entlegenen Nowaja Zemlya hoch-und herunterzukommen, einem Archipel, der zur russischen Arktis gehört. Das männliche Jungtiert riskierte Leib und Leben um an der ca. 90 m hohen Felswand auf Eierdiebstahl zu gehen, dort wo sich Hunderte von kreischenden Dickschnabellummen drängen.-

For birds nesting on a precarious cliff, the last visitor they might expect to see would be a hulking polar bear clambering down to join them.Yet this bulky beast somehow managed to descend a craggy precipice in Russia’s remote Arctic archipelago of Novaya Zemlya.The young male risked life and limb scavenging for eggs along the 300ft-high rock face thronged with hundreds of squawking Brunnich's Guillemots.

Manchmal verlor der Bär den Halt und musste unverrichteter Dinge erstmal wieder den Aufstieg antreten-

"Jeder auf dem Boot war ruhig, wir saßen einfach nur da, voller Ehrfurcht." Trotz seines Draufgängertums, kehrte der Bär nach mehrmaligem Ausrutschen zurück an die Spitze der Klippe ohne eine volle Mahlzeit genossen zu haben. Zuvor waren der Gruppe auf Eisschollen jagende Eisbären in Bukhta Maka begegnet, nach zwei Reisetagen in denen kein Land zu sehen war.

Der amerikanische Fotograf Dylan Coker, der die unglaubliche Szene eingefangen hat, sagte: "Die Höhe, in der sich der Bär befand sowie die Steilheit der Felswand waren absolut erstaunlich. Jeder hatte Angst, er würde fallen. Jedes Mal, wenn der Bär dabei war auszurutschen, konnte man jemanden vom Boot nach Luft schnappen hören." Er rutschte ziemlich oft aus, an einem Punkt hatte er sich bereits gestreckt, um an die Eier eines Nests in seiner Reichweite zu kommen."-

‘Everyone on the boat was quiet, we just sat there in awe.’ Despite its bravado, the bear returned to the top of the cliff without enjoying a full meal after losing its footing several times.Previously the group had encountered polar bears hunting on ice floes in Bukhta Maka, after journeying for two days without seeing land.

American photographer Dylan Coker, who captured the incredible scene, said: ‘The height that the bear was at and the sheerness of the cliff face were absolutely amazing,’ said the 40-year-old.
‘Everyone was terrified it was going to fall.‘Every so often there would be a gasp from someone on the boat when the bear slipped.‘It was slipping quite a bit and one point it was stretched right out to reach for eggs in a nest.’

Traditionell sitzen die Bären an einem Eisloch, darauf wartend dass eine Robbe ihren Kopf durchsteckt, so dass sie sie greifen können." Aber da es immer weniger Eis gibt, suchen sich die Bären alternative Nahrungsquellen und haben die Eier der Vögel entdeckt. Während der Expedition wurden die Touristen auch Zeugen von Bären, die Hunderte von Seemeilen hinaus aufs Meer schwammen. "Sie sind gewohnt, sich auf Eisschollen auszuruhen und von dort aus auf Jagd zu gehen, aber nun schwimmen die Bären herum bis sie erschöpft sind, dann ertrinken sie."-

‘Traditionally the bears sit by an air hole in the ice waiting for a seal to poke its head out so they can grab it.‘But because there's less and less ice, the bears are looking for alternative sources of food and have discovered the birds' eggs.’ During the expedition the tourists also witnessed bears swimming hundreds of miles out to sea. Mr Coker added: ‘They're used to resting on and hunting from ice floes but now the bears swim around until they are exhausted, then they drown.’

Dies war das erste Mal, dass ein ziviles Schiff die Erlaubnis erhalten hat, in diesen Gewässern zu segeln, die auch Teil einer großen militärischen Zone ist.Bergig und geheimnisumwittert erstreckt sich der Archipel Nowaja Semlja 1000 km in einem verlängerter Halbmond zwischen der Barents-und Kara See und ist heute eine der am stärksten eingeschränkten und isoliertesten Regionen. Aurora Expeditions sicherte sich die erste Genehmigung unter der Bedingung, dass zwei Vertreter der Regierung als Aufpasser fungieren.Mr Coker sagt: "Wir hatten Glück dies gesehen zu haben. Wir hätten leicht an einem anderen Tag dort sein können, und wer weiß wie oft so etwas vorkommt.Ich werde nie den Tag vergessen, an dem ich einen Eisbären sah, der Jagd auf Eier auf einem Klippenrand macht. Ich hätte mir kein einzigartigeres Abenteuer vorstellen können. "

This was the first time a civilian boat has been granted permission to sail in these waters, which also forms part of a large military zone.Mountainous and shrouded in mystery, the Novaya Zemlya archipelago stretches 1000 km in an elongated crescent between the Barents and Kara seas.Today it remains one of Russia's most restricted and isolated regions.Aurora Expeditions secured the first permit on condition that two government representatives act as chaperones.Mr Coker added: ‘We were really lucky to have witnessed it.‘We could have easily been there on a different day and who knows how often this kind of thing occurs.‘I will never forget the day I watched a polar bear hunt for eggs on a cliff-edge.‘I couldn't have imagined a better or more unique adventure.’

Note:
This has been the second documented event, the first one was witnessed last year in Nanuvut/Canada at a site in Coats Island, where researchers had never seen similar scenes before, polar bears in that area had been seen in the area never before 2000. Although it is another proof of changing conditions due to climate change, it proves as well that polar bears have an incredible sense to adjust even in the most difficult circumstances.

Douggie & Ellie - Two other Pam Flower's sled dog stories...

Here the promised second part of sled dogs children's books by Pam Flowers....

From the beginning one puppy was different from the rest. He was big and black, his brother and sisters small and gray. Pam Flowers with Ellie

"Pam Flowers is a small quiet woman who considers herself a loner. Her idea of fun is to travel with her dogs in lonely desolate places. This may or may not sound like fun to you but Pam’s adventures captivate the interests of adults and children alike.

After graduating from college, Pam held a good job as a respiratory therapist. She lived in a big city and worked in a big hospital. Pam was unhappy and dreamed of spending time in snow covered isolated places. She left her job and moved to Alaska intending to raise dogs and travel solo into the hinterlands.

Pam’s most extensive and dangerous expedition was traveling solo from Barrow, Alaska to Repulse Bay in Nunavut Territory, Canada, as distance of 2,500 miles along the entire Arctic Coast of Alaska and Canada. Pam left Barrow with eight dogs in February of 1993. After many distressing incidents including polar bears, melting sea ice and a lost dog, Pam and the eight dogs reached Repulse Bay eleven months later. This was the first and longest solo dog sled trek by a woman in recorded history. Pam’s most recent expedition was a through hike on the 2,175-mile Appalachian Trail with one-year-old Ellie, her black lab. The trek took the better part of the 2008-2009 school year. Pam is currently writing a book called Ellie’s Long Walk to tell of their experiences along the trail."

Pam Flowers ist eine kleine ruhige Frau, die sich selbst für eine Einzelgängerin hält. Ihre Vorstellung von Spaß ist es, mit ihren Hunden an einsame verlassene Orte zu reisen. Dies kann oder kann sich nicht wie Spaß für Sie anhören, aber Pams Abenteuer fesseln sowohl Erwachsene und Kinder gleichermaßen.

Pams umfangreichste und gefährlichste Expedition waren die 2.500 Meilen entlang der gesamten arktischen Küste von Alaska und Kanada, von Barrow, Alaska bis Repulse Bay im Nunavut Territory, Kanada. Pam verlässt Barrow mit acht Hunden im Februar 1993. Nach vielen schwierigen Zwischenfällen darunter Eisbären, das Schmelzen des Meereises und einem verloren gegangenem Hund, kommt Pam 11 Monate später in Repulse Bay an. Dies war die erste und längste Solo Hundeschlitten-Wanderung einer Frau in der Geschichte, nachzulesen hier.

Pams letzte Expedition war eine Wanderung auf dem 2175-Meile Appalachian Trail mit ihrer einjährigen schwarzen Labradorhündin Ellie. Die Wanderung dauerte 8 Monate.


"Pam has amazing skill when it comes to training dogs. She has two rules in her kennel, no fighting and no stealing another dog’s food – if you want more food I’ll give you more but you must not steal. Pam spends a lot of time, energy and effort in making sure that her dogs understand what she expects of them. Pam had her work cut out for her when training little Ellie for the Appalachian through hike. As a puppy, Ellie had enough energy for half a dozen dogs. She tried to please Pam but a good share of the time she couldn’t resist fun and games, especially with other dogs. When Ellie saw another dog on a training run, she’d charge up to the dog hoping to play.

One day Ellie’s actions caught Pam off guard and she was knocked face first into the ground ending up with a wrist injury, black eyes and broken glasses. Would Ellie ever learn to behave for the long through hike? Lesser trainers would have labeled the dog a delinquent and given up on her but Pam sought a solution for the problem. For several days, she withheld affection from Ellie, giving her food and water but rarely speaking to her except in a very stern voice. Ellie began to get the picture. This was the turning point for her it was hard but from then on she did her very best to obey Pam to earn her approval, friendship and trust."

Pam hat erstaunliche Fähigkeiten, wenn es um Hundeerziehung geht. Sie hat zwei Regeln, kein Kampf und keinem anderen Hund das Essen wegstehlen - "wenn du mehr essen willst, gebe ich dir mehr, aber du darfst nicht stehlen". Pam verbringt viel Zeit, Energie und Mühe, dafür zu sorgen, dass ihre Hunde verstehen, was sie von ihnen erwartet. Pam hatte sich Zeit freigeschaufelt um Ellie für den Appalachiantrail zu trainieren. Als Welpe hatte Ellie genug Energie für ein halbes Dutzend Hunde. Sie versuchte, Pam zu gefallen, aber ein guter Teil der Zeit konnte sie nicht widerstehen, zu spielen undSpaß zu haben, vor allem mit den anderen Hunden. Wenn Ellie einen anderen Hund auf einem Trainingslauf sah, rannte sie hinterher, in der Hoffnung mit dem Hund zu spielen.

Eines Tages erwischten Ellies Handlungen Pam unvorbereitet und sie endete mit dem Gesicht voran am Boden und mit einer Handgelenksverletzung, blauen Augen und zerbrochener Brille. Würde Ellie wohl jemals lernen, für die lange Wanderung hindurch zu folgen? Nicht wenige Trainer hätten die Hündin als Delinquent bezeichnet und sie aufgegeben, aber Pam suchte nach einer Lösung für das Problem. Für einige Tagen verweigerte sie Ellie Zuneigung, gan ihr Futter und Wasser, aber sprach nur selten mit ihr, und wenn, dann mit eher rauhen Stimme. Ellie begann zu begreifen. Dies war der Wendepunkt für sie, es war hart, aber von da an tat sie ihr Bestes, um Pam zu gehorchen, um ihre Zustimmung, Freundschaft und ihr Vertrauen zu gewinnen. -

Pam Flowers was introduced to the beauty of the Arctic in a school program when she was 11 years old. She is a graduate of the National Outdoor Leadership School, Lander, Wyoming, and has numerous sled dog expeditions to her credit. In 1991, Outside magazine named her an "Outsider of the Year," and in 1996 the Society of Woman Geographers awarded her their Gold Medal.

Pam Flowers lernte die Schönheit der Arktis durch ein Schulprogramm kennen, als sie 11 Jahre alt war. Sie ist Absolventin der National Outdoor Leadership School, Lander, Wyoming, und kann zahlreiche Schlittenhund-Expeditionen auf ihrem Konto verbuchen. Arctic Summer Tales...Michael Poliza

Diese arktischen Eisbär-im-Feuerkrautblumenmeer-Fotos sind bekannt und sie sind alle von dem deutschen Fotografen Michael Poliza, aufgenommen im August 2008 (auch der Regenbogen). Am bekanntesten ist natürlich der etwas ernst dreinblickende Eisbär (2.v.o.), oftmals wurde dieses Foto als schockierender Beweis für die Klimaerwärmung gesehen, Eisbären ohne Schnee ist nach wie vor ein schwer zu integrierendes Bild in unserer Vorstellungswelt.-

These polar bear-in-the-fireweed photos are well known and they were all taken (incl.the rainbow) by the German wildlife photographer Michael Poliza in August 2008. For sure, most known of all is the very serious looking polar bear in the second pic, often taken as shocking proof for the state of global warming...Polar bears without snow, that didn't exist in our imagination.

Doch in der Tat gibt es während der arktischen Sommermonate eine ganz andere Polarwelt zu entdecken, zumindest in der weiter südlich vom Pol gelegenen Gegend wie der westlichen Hudson Bay. Neben Flechten und Moosen, blühen Pflanzen wie das oben abgebildete Feuerkraut oder verschiedene Beerenarten von denen sich Eisbären in der jagdfreien Zeit durchaus ernähren, während sie auf das Zufrieren der Hudson Bay warten.*


But in fact, during summer season there is a different life to discover in the Arctic, at least in the more southern areas, explicitly in the Western-Hudson Bay area. Beside lichens and mosses, there are also plants flowering colourful and in abundance like the beautiful fireweed on top or the different species of berries on which polar bears feed while waiting for the ice to reform.*

Seine diesjährige Reise zur Arktis vor ein paar Wochen mit der "Bremen", die übrigens auch schon mal Halt im Hafen von Knuts Aussenposten Port Mathurin gemacht hat, führte Michael Poliza über Grönland wieder zur Hudson Bay, wo nicht nur die arktischen Sommerpflanzen aufgenommen wurden...-

This year's voyage to the Arctic, just a few weeks ago on the "Bremen", which by the way once even moored for a couple of hours in the harbour of Knut's Outpost in Port Mathurin, lead Michael Poliza again via Greenland to the Hudson Bay where he did not only took arctic summer plants...

Aber erstmal noch ein spektakuläres Loch im Eis eines Gletschers, bevor es zu dem nicht weniger spektakulären Regenbogen 2010 geht...-

Insgesamt 12 Eisbären zählte Michael Poliza auf seiner Reise. Das Wetter war äußerst wechselhaft und stürmisch. Um die 10000 Fotos hat er gemacht..., einige mehr können schon jetzt entdeckt werden (s.u.). Es lohnt sich! -

"Food habits of polar bears on land during the ice-free period in western Hudson Bay were examined between 1986 and 1992. In contrast to previous studies, feeding on vegetation during the ice-free period was common. Between August and October, evidence of feeding was found in 34% of the females and 26 % of the males captured over 10 km inland from the coast. The primary forage was Vaccinium uliginosum and Empetrum nigrum berries. Feeding was most common in subadults and females. The incidence of feeding on berries varied annually from 2 to 41 %. We were not able to determine the energetic importance of terrestrial foraging, but the intake may reduce the rate of weight loss of bears on land, particularly in years when berries are abundant. ..."

Big-Enough Anna....The Little Sled Dog Who Braved the Arctic

Dies ist der Titel eines Kinderbuches, in dem es um die wahre Geschichte eines kleinen Hundezwergs geht, die zur Anführerin ihres Rudels wird.

Pam Flowers ist dabei, sich für eine sechs Monate lange Fahrt per Hundeschlitten vorzubereiten, 2500-Meilen von Barrow/Alaska nach Repulse Bay in Kanada, die sie zur ersten Frau macht, die die nordamerikanische Arktis allein überquert.

Anna und ihre Geschwister trainieren zusammen mit den älteren ausgebildeten und erfahreneren Hunden, die stärksten unter ihnen werden die Expedition begleiten. Bevor die Jungtiere versuchen, einen Schlitten zu ziehen, wird ihnen erst einmal beigebracht Sprachbefehlen zu folgen, ein Geschirr zu tragen, sowie Zweige, Reisig, und dann kleine Stämme hinter sich zu ziehen.

Obwohl die Kleinste, beweist Anna Mut und Liebe zum Laufen, sie wird für die Expedition ausgewählt. Als etwa in der Mitte des Trecks der erfahrene Leithund Douggie davonrennt; übernimmt Anna die Führung bis zum Abschluss der Reise, die fast doppelt so lange dauert wie geplant. ...

Flowers was preparing for a six-month, 2500-mile dogsled journey from Barrow, AK, to Repulse Bay, Canada, which would make her the first woman to cross the North American Arctic alone. Anna and her littermates trained with the older, more experienced dogs, with the intention that the strongest would accompany the expedition. Before attempting to pull a sled, the young canines were taught to follow voice commands; wear a harness; and drag twigs, sticks, and then small logs behind them. Pam Flowers erzählt Annas beeindruckende Geschichte auch in Klassenräumen und Auditorien in ganz Nordamerika. But just as we came even with them, Robert looked over and saw them. Robert is very social and decided to go visiting. At first the other dogs didn’t see them. I told Douggie to “haw” to help keep us going straight. Then, suddenly, everyone saw them… (ALONE ACROSS THE ARCTIC)"

Was mich angeht, ich bin nun mindestens ebenso neugierig wie Robert geworden...Für Arktisinteressierte und Hundeliebhaber gehören diese beiden Bücher ganz sicher auf die Liste der Bücher, die unbedingt gelesen werden müssen...

As to me, I can only say that I have become curious too...Both books are certainly a must-read for everyone intrigued by the Arctic and loving dogs...

Anna died 2007 at age 15...

Thanks to Pam Flowers and her lovely book, she will always be remembered as what she was...

By the way, I came across Anna while looking for background information about the Arctic village Dikson which was visited by Svetlana Bogdanovitch during her Icebreaker trip, instead I landed here probably because of Ann Dixon, Pamela Flower's co-author of 'Big-Enough Anna'...as so often I am again indebted to the Internet...:))
