"Was machst du da?"
"Was nimmst du denn?

"Was machst du da?"

Er will dich schiessen."

Bear shot in Finland along with two cubs

Encounters with bears are common in the South Karelia region...

Police shot a bear that mauled a woman jogger in Lappeenranta on Friday.

Following the encounter in the Kasukkala-Sunila area, south-east of Lappeenranta, the bear headed toward the centre of town. The incident was reported shortly before 6 pm.
Police were assisted by frontier guard officers and 50 hunters in their search for the bear, YLW says.

Encounters with bears are common in the South Karelia region. In Lappeenranta alone, 137 bear sightings have been reported to authorities this year.

In June 1998, a jogger was killed after startling a mother bear in Ruokolahti, some 50 km from Lappeenranta -- the first such fatality in the country in more than a century.

"several hundred Finns are killed annually in traffic accidents, but no strong voice emerged against the growing number of private cars. Moreover, even though traffic accidents with the semi-wild elks result in approximately ten human lives lost in Finland every year, no agreement on reducing the elk population has been reached"

Finland has a bear fixation, putting bears on jigsaw maps of the country, Norwegians consult the trolls at the bottom of the gardens before going away on an important jouney, and Iceland has troll-rocks. Its history is defined by ice. (from:Don't go down to the woods today)

Simba's grand-kids....

Heute ist wieder Erinnerungstag. 9 Monate ohne Simba.

Today it's remembrance day, exactly 9 months we have been living without Simba. On the photo above it's not Simba, but the pups are very probably her "grand-children" , born last Saturday. 6 in total, but one didn't make it and died yesterday. The mother lives at the place with Alpha, one of Simba's kids who grew up there, now already 5 years old. It is there wherehe got his name. He looked like that shortly before we gave him away to live at that place....

How often he has already fathered before, nobody really knows, and it is still too early to say something but we hope that the mom and the little ones will hang in, she has problems feeding them and the pups seem to be weak...So cross your fingers...!

Polar bears could return to Winnipeg Zoo...

Skipper, Debby & Dennis in Assininoine Zoo in Winnipeg long ago...

WINNIPEG -- Polar bears could return to Winnipeg in months instead of years, as Assiniboine Park Zoo is preparing to house orphan animals from across the Arctic.

The largest zoo in Manitoba, the self-proclaimed polar bear capital of the world, has been without a member of the iconic Arctic species since 2008, when 42-year-old zoo resident Debby died. The zoo is unable to acquire another adult polar bear because its existing bear enclosure, built in the 1950s, no longer meets Manitoba Conservation standards.

Young polar bears, however, may be housed at Assiniboine Park Zoo temporarily as part of a plan to make the park an international centre of polar bear education as well as rescue efforts for orphan ursus maritimus found anywhere in the Arctic.

The Assiniboine Park Conservancy is planning to build a $7-million facility called the International Polar Bear Conservation Centre as part of a $90-million zoo rehabilitation that will take place over the next 10 years.

The plan could see young polar bears arrive even before construction begins.

"If a polar bear becomes available, we'll do our best to ensure it finds a home," zoo co-ordinator Gordon Glover said.

But zoo visitors probably won't be able to see the orphan cubs in Winnipeg, which will be fed and cared for behind closed doors in order to acclimatize them for life in other zoos. Orphan polar bears are never returned to the wild, where they would die of exposure, starvation or cannibalistic predation.

Mami Simba went sailing...

Because of a picasa bug last week, some of my uploaded photos in the Rodrigues blog couldn't be seen, so some of you haven't probably fully understood the hint posted by Knut last Friday...

No postings here during the last days as I was on a sailing regatta around Knut's Aussenposten, who likes can find more about it here, and still a lot more to come during the next days...

So, please have a bit patience, as long as I am busy with sorting out material concerning the sailing event, I can't do big stories here...
