Sad news from Palić :Gentle giant "Bo" died -...Björn-Heinrich ist tot.
Who has had a look on Ulli J's blog recently, could find following sad message :
"The last day in June 2011 was a sad day at Palić Zoo in Serbia. It was time to say good-bye to Bo, the adopted male polar bear of the zoo, who had lived almost 14 years in Palic. He died at the age of 24 years."
He was born November 7, 1986 and named Björn-Heinrich. His mother Aika failed to care for him, so it was left to humans to raise him. At birth, he weighed only 750g, so for keeper Veronika Buchholz it was a demanding task to take care of him. Temporarily the little cub lived at her home place. However, she did very well. Björn-Heinrich was the first and only successful hand reared polar bear at the Tierpark Friedrichsfelde in Berlin.
When he was one year old, he was sent to the Dvur Kralove Zoo in the Czech Republic, where he lived for ten years. At the end of November 1997, he was transferred to Palić Zoo. Here Simba, born in December 1986, was waiting for him. She was born in Leipzig and came to Palić already in October 1990. With her he fathered three cubs, all raised by Simba herself. Two females Yuki (1999) and Paula (2004-today Nana) live in Japan. The youngest cub Jorek(Cuker) was born in 2006 and since February 2008 he has been at Sosto, in Hungary. As Björn-Heinrich was difficult to pronounce in Serbia, his name was shortened to Bo.
Gorki, Björn-Heinrich's father in Antwerp ZooOnly few people know, that Bo's father Gorki was hand-raised too. Born 10 December 1979 at Antwerp Zoo, he came at age 3 on 16 December 1982 to Berlin Tierpark. Contrary to the myth that hand-raised bears don't make good "breeding material", an assumption which by the way brought Bo from Czech Republic to Serbia in the first place, his father Gorki mated successful. With the ladies Inka, Polly and Aika he fathered even 7 times successfully raised young. Bo's siblings and half-siblings Eric, Felix (father of Giovanna) and Banause (today Hokuto/Kagoshima) are still living.
Bo's daughter Yuki with one of her two cubs born on 05.12.2010, unfortunately they didn't surviveAs so many other hand-raised polar bears, Bo was a very gentle bear who always had a particularly close relationship with his human caretakers and who could be hand fed by them without any risk. It is hoped, that Simba will once again have offspring in winter, the pregnancy last year was not successful, certainly Ulli J can tell more about it, when she is back from her voyage.
Ulli J who has been in Palic herself this week, told me more about the death cause of Bo, some of these infos can also be found on the Serbian zoo website:
"Björn-Henry died of blood poisoning. He suffered of paralysis in a hind leg, caused by a misplaced vaccination injuring a nerve when he was still a cub. As Bo could not burden this leg properly, he used the other one more. On the webpage of the zoo it was mentioned that he could often be seen hobbling through his enclosure. He suffered from some age-related bone damage and received painkillers. Temporarily the pain killers helped and he could even go back into the pool, but had problems then to get out. In the end, he spent most of the time lying which led to a bedsore, eventually causing the sepsis. This was discovered only after his death. "
Not only in Palić, where the gentle giant had always had a special dear place in the heart of the zoo staff and visitors, Bo will be missed sadly and not be forgotten. Because of Knut his story did not get lost, but time was missing to get to know him better.

Agee....The One and Only...
Laurentiu Garafeanu/Barcroft
This is Agee, the one and only...She has just caused once again another public stir by the remarkable photos published a few days ago in the Sun and the Daily Mail, where she can be admired together with her coach and mentor Mark Dumas. Agee is the absolute star when it comes to animals working for the film and advertising industry. Here in the K-files she has already had one or two brief appearances too, always posted with the intention of posting a longer article about her and her background, but the material which came up during the time proved to be so extensive that it left me with a variety of 10 (!) different article drafts last year...-

The recent photos, especially in connection with some comments I have come to read yesterday, are motivating and inspiring me now to eventually clean up my archives and to present Agee more in detail. And as this is not possible in one go, it will be a series, well knowing that this is also a delicate endeavor, as polar bears do actually not belong in front of a camera, except when it concerns wildlife documentaries.-

To me it is important to credit Agee a little more space because she is a truly exceptional bear, in her own way and as led by Mark Dumas and his wife Diane, she has without any doubt in all these years, paradoxically, also made a major contribution concerning polar bears as endangered species, the conditions of life and habitat of polar bears in the Arctic. She has raised curiosity, interest and love for polar bears... and the wish to protect them.-

To be continued...

Greetings to Wimbledon....
Knut's Outpost has always had a secret soft spot for tennis, an old bear tradition so to speak, especially in June...And today we just want to wish Sabine Lisicki all the best in her semi-final match against Maria Sharapowa, for sure, Sabine will need the strength of a bear against the "princess", but haven't we all learned that sometimes even Cinderellas have some luck...?
So be brave, and fight with the heart of a bear...
It's truly our fault, our greetings couldn't be sent in time thanks to blogger who let us down during the day, the polar bear lady above is slightly cross with us. But as ex- coach of Navratilova (we don't comment on that one, we all know that Martina was doing fine on her own..:)), there are some words of advice...
"Just go out there and do what you've got to do."
"The moment of victory is much too short to live for that and nothing else."
There will be other matches to win...

Hmmm....Ménage à 3.....Ein Gorilla in unserer Wohnung

A childless French couple have adopted a 13-year-old female gorilla
"Zoo managers Pierre and Elianne Thivillon take the gorilla, named Digit, home every night after she has spent the day entertaining young visitors at the zoo enclosure.
The Thivillons, who live just next door to Digit's cage, took in the 120kg gorilla when her biological mother refused to breast-feed her.
The couple has already spent time with living Digit's brother, Ginko.
They had to eventually send Ginko back to the zoo after he started becoming a too aggressive. However, life with Digit is said to be more pleasant.
"It's going very well," said Mr Thivillon. "We have a 13-year-old relationship with Digit. So obviously we have created a very strong bond with each other."
"Family life was a little more difficult to manage with Ginko because he only got to know us at the age of five," he added.
Taking care of a gorilla takes a toll on your social life, just as raising a child does, the couple said. No more nights at the cinema or dinners at restaurants.
Digit likes receiving attention from her adoptive parents who said they don't mind the sacrifice either. She enjoys sleeping in the couple's bed.
Giving up Ginko was tough, but having Digit in their lives is a pleasure, they said.
"Life was very difficult a few days after Ginko left. We got used to seeing him everyday. He slept near us, we had breakfast together, we had a good time together and it was a real pleasure. It was very hard to see him go," Mr Thivillon said.
Zoo vet Jean-Christophe Gerard was amused by the bond between the gorilla and the Thivillons. He said he was surprised at Digit's gentle behaviour.
"It's an animal. It can have reactions; it can react violently to things it doesn't like," Mr Gerard said. "It's a female that was never aggressive with Pierre or Elianne, so there has never been any behaviour or other concerns. They respect her; they have established a relationship with her, which is stable for the moment."

On the French wikipedia site one can find the information that the park had some other iconic gorillas before. Alexis who arrived 1974 as the first gorilla died on 14 April 2007 after a cardiac crisis, and Platon, at his time a true icon of the zoo, died in 2008 after several years of suffering respiratory problems. Digit is mentioned too as gorilla who attracts most of attention due to her being hand-raised by Pierre and Elaine Thivillon.-
(source)"

An old one...but a good one....And about the Unexpected...
The police stop him and say that he can't drive around with the penguins in his car and should take them to the zoo. The man agrees and drives off. The next day the same man is driving down the road with the same twenty penguins. He is stopped by the same police officer who says, "Hey! I thought I told you to take those to the zoo!" The man replies, "I did. Today I'm taking them to the movies."-

Popper's Penguins"...And looking for the pic where the chap is going with his penguins to the cinema, (I was curious which movie they would pick), I found "Mr. Popper's Penguins"...

Operation Snowflake Accomplished! - Alles Gute in Louisville, Qannik!!!
Last week one could find on Ulli J' s blog the information that by the end of the month another big day in the life of the tiny Alaska-Baby was going to happen, Qannik's first big flight from Alaska Zoo to Louisville, the zoo in Kentucky will become her new home.
Qannik, which means 'snowflake' in the language of the Inuipat, and which is also the name of the location where she was found by workers from an oilfield, has caused a vast operation with lots of logistics to get her safe and sound to her new home. "Operation Snowflake" had been planned for about 2 months, and it seems that everything went well...
Qannik's first part of her journey...Photo: John Gomes
On her flight on a climate-controlled UPS Boeing 747-400, Qannik was accompanied by an entourage of animal experts from the Alaska and Louisville zoos who cared for her during the six hour flight.
UPS Captain Edward Horne piloted the direct flight from Alaska along with First Officer Wayne Jackson and escort Captain Steve Jennings. UPS has flown similarly precious cargo before. “Flying a 5-month-old polar bear across the country really isn’t too complicated for UPS,” said Scott DePaepe, the UPS Alaska logistics coordinator. “We’ve moved whale sharks, we’ve moved pandas, and we’ve moved the Terra Cotta warriors. It’s all about logistics.”
Here the video of Operation Snowflake, getting Qannik from Alaska Zoo on to the plane....
Qannik’s crate was loaded onto the 747 just prior to departure in Anchorage to minimize her wait time, and she was the first off the plane in Louisville.
A special flight path was devised to provide a route near cities with zoo veterinarians in case of an emergency. Louisville Zoo director Walczak, Louisville Zoo veterinarian Dr. Zoli Gyimesi and assistant mammal curator Jane Anne Franklin were allowed to fly with the cub, as were Lampi and Alaska Zoo animal curator Shannon Jensen. Dr. Gymesi remarked, “Qannik had a quiet flight. She appeared comfortable and restful.”
Franklin fed Qannik special frozen formula pops that the Alaska Zoo Animal Curator Shannon Jensen had prepared and her cabin temperature was chilled to between 58 and 60 degrees. “She was a great traveler,” Franklin adds.
Direkt nach der Landung wurde sie in einem klimatisierten Fahrzeug transportiert, begleitet von einem zusätzlichen Sicherheitsfahrzeug und Sicherheitskräften.-Qannik arrived in Louisville Tuesday, June 28, 2011 at 12:40 a.m.Once she arrived in Louisville, she was transported in a climate-controlled vehicle accompanied by a back-up vehicle and security.
In a press conference held yesterday, zoo officials said that Qannik will remain in quarantine and be given time to acclimate to her surroundings, but no timetable has been set on when she would join the zoo’s other polar bear, 26-year-old Arki, in the Glacier Run exhibit. The zoo staff will wait until Qannik gains more weight (she weighs 60 pounds at the moment, about 45 more than she was found) before she is acclimated to different areas of the exhibit and put on display.
“Right now it’s about making sure she’s really stable, she has to get her body weight up to a very good weight before we put these bears together,” Franklin said.
Gyimesi, said the acclimation period will also allow staff members to get Qannik into water and swimming, which she should be doing at this age.
Qannik on 26.06.2011As it might take some days before we can see new pics of Qannik, here one taken on Qannik's last day at Alaska Zoo when she still was on exhibit. She has made herself there a lot of friends and she sure will be missed a lot by visitors and the people who cared for her. Qannik's unique story has touched a lot of people also all over the world, and one can only wish the little one all the best for her future. A lot of people and the media write about her as the "new Knut", it is true, she has something which reminds me too a lot of Knut when he was that age, but I prefer taking her as what she is - a very special little "snowflake"... So it's Qannik, simply Qannik...
Qannik's progress will be updated on the Louisville Zoo’s website at www.louisvillezoo.org and via the Zoo’s official Facebook and Twitter pages (@QannikTheCubLZ).
Operation Snowflake is the product of a two-month collaboration between the Alaska Zoo and Louisville Zoo, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), Polar Bears International (PBI) and UPS.
As it is not common practice by zoos to share the experience of polar bear transports, I want to say thanks to all involved for having shared the various steps of Qannik's journey with the public as it was done!
