Sweet Rosh Hashanah for Bears

Today at sundown starts Rosh Hashana, the celebration of the Jewish New Year, a time to review moral and religious behaviour of the last year. Bears at the Ramat Gan Safari Park outside of Tel Aviv, Israel, were given apples, pomegranates, honey and other sweet fruits on Thursday. Jews traditionally eat apples and honey during this holiday season in hopes that the new year will be sweet and fruitful. A further custom is the eating of pomegranates, the many seeds are seen as a symbol of hope to get as many rights one day...
In this sense, enjoy the pics of the bears...))

Photos:Sylvia S.

These pics were taken by Sylvia S. on 26th of May in 2010. After feeding time Knut played with a little frog in his moat. As usual he was very gentle and careful.
LeenaP made me aware of these pics and the following video.

Verzauberte Prinzen...

Photo:Leena P.

Recently I was looking for a photo I saw on National Geographic, a frog resting on a tiger. I couldn't find it. The more I had to laugh when I got just one day later the photo of Leena P (who didn't know  about my frog research). The other pic I found just like that on facebook, good enough to wish you all a relaxing week-end...

Tribute to Snow...The other half of Klondike was found dead on Monday

Snow
06.11.1994 - 02.09.2012

After only 7 month in the Reid Park Zoo, Snow was found dead in her enclosure last Monday morning.

"We are very sad to announce that “Snow,” the Zoo’s 17 year-old polar bear, has died unexpectedly. She was discovered first thing this morning by her Zoo Keeper. She was in her normal sleeping position and location, with no signs of trauma. The Zoo’s veterinarian indicated that although she had chronic health issues, she was improving. She was swimming and eating well yesterday. We are proud of everything the Zoo staff did to provide Snow with a wonderful quality of life in Tucson. She will be missed."

Snow was a polar bear with a very special story, she and her twin brother Klondike made headlines in 1994 as they were, similar to Knut, raised by their zoo keepers in Denver as their mother Ulu rejected them. Obviously she was not ready to raise the cubs, not only that she hadn't prepared for birth, she hadn't gained weight neither.
"Usually, the body of a female polar bear will not let her eggs develop until her body has built up a large store of fat."

Thanks to our Canadian friend Diane here some pics of little Snow with and without her brother Klondike..

My favourite pic of little Snow...

Until their first birthday the bears were raised by their keepers who even shared at times their sleeping bags with them. Differently to Knut and Thomas Dörflein the bears were raised by a team of three, so they could take turns. The bond between the bears and their surrogate parents stayed very close. It was an incident during feeding time when the bears were 8 months old, which showed the keepers that time for a change was due. Klondike had cornered Cindy Bickel. Her colleague could help her and no harm was done but it became clear that the bears had outweighed their keepers and needed a place on their own.

Hier das Buch mit ihrer Geschichte.-
Klondike and Snow's story was published in a book.

Find here an extract about Snow's and Klondike first year when they were raised by their keepers Dr.David Kenny, the zoo's senior veterinarian, and his staff, Cindy Bickel and Denny Roling.

There has even been a children's book, doing math by featuring their story and the challenges of calculating the right amount of milk and other foods.

Klondike & Snow in Seaworld Orlando where they were moved at age one due to zoo space's constraints in Denver at that time, much to the despair of Denver's residents who considered themselves as the cub's extended family.

Hier sieht man Snow in Seaworld Orlando.

Snow had a complicated medical history. She had rickets when she was young. In recent years she developed serious skin allergies, which was the reason to send her to Arizona, it was hoped that the drier climate would do her good. After more than 17 years of living together, Klondike and Snow had to part from each other.

Klondike lebt weiterhin in Seaworld Orlando.-
Klondike still lives in Seaworld Orlando.

Time to say farewell to Snow.
As for me her story is so much connected to the first year, here an enchanting video, which I like a lot.

You will be missed, Snow,
wherever you are, I am sure you will from time to time watch over your brother, won't you...?

Here both of them are...

The photographer Sergey Gorshkov has spent six years following bears as they hunt for salmon, paddle in a lake and walk for miles through forests in Kamchatka, Russia, home to more than 18,000 bears, a fragile habitat threatened by unprecedented levels of poaching which is hoped to be cut down by funds of UN development programs operating on community-level.

First tentative steps towards standing upright
Wildlife photographer Steven Kazlowski, who caught the moment from a nearby boat, said: ‘The bear was trying very hard to stand up and keep its balance.

‘Young bears are always trying to stand and get a better look at what’s around them, as their mothers do, but they are incredibly unbalanced.‘This curious and overexcited cub was trying to get a better look at us as we passed a few yards away on the skiff.’

Kazlowski, who specialises in images of polar bears, took the amazing pictures from Bernard Spit, a narrow strip of land extending from Northern Alaska.

But bears impress also with diving qualities

Schokoladendieb mit Manieren....A Bear in a Candy Store

Some time during the night, this young bear broke into a candy store and made himself quite at home, enjoying lots and lots of chocolaty treats.

The video showed the bear wandering in the front door, which had a faulty lock, and helping himself to mouthfuls of candy from the display rack at the counter before sauntering back outside and chomping down the chocolate treats on the sidewalk.

The bear repeats the routine several times in a matter of 20 minutes, helping himself to an assortment of chocolate-covered Rice Krispie Treats, peanut butter cups, a special Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory treat called Balls of Joy, English Toffee and -- no surprise here -- Cookie Bears, according to the Estes Park News.

Adams told the newspaper she has since replaced the locks and the bear has not been able to break in again. She said customers who’ve heard about the ursine bandit’s exploits want to order the same treats the bear enjoyed.

“At least five times a day people come in to order the exact same things the bear ate; I love it, we’ve been making extras of these particular treats just to keep up with the demand!” she told the newspaper.

That polar bears have a special relationship to rubbish bins is in the meantime sort of common knowledge. Here for a change now it's about the other way round, rubbish bins, in fact 6401 to be precise, with a special relationship to polar bears...Just have a look!

It was also about a world record - 150 helpers created with these bins in Berlin the world's largest mosaic image...

And yes, this is one of so many posts which was supposed to be posted already ages ago...:)

Kind of cake...Meet the pedalo bears Nellie and Loki!

Animal Keeper Nicola McCleery covers a pedalo in jam and grapes

And the fun begins...

Being shown the ropes (or pedals)

Loki enjoys a light snack aboard his very own boat

Nellie struggles to get aboard

""Smarter than the average bear these two can bear-ly believe their luck.
European brown bear Nellie and her seven-month-old cub Loki found an exciting edition left in their enclosure at Blair Drummond Safari Park, near Stirling.

They were given a pedalo smeared with their favourite jam and grapes to keep them entertained.

But once the food was polished off pair made the most of their new toy, splashing around on-board, in an apparent attempt to learn to sail.

The bears were given the pedalo to help stimulate them and keep them active at their home in

Keeper Nicola McCleery daubed jam on the vessel and hid grapes inside

We are always thinking up different types of enrichment we can give them. It makes feeding a bit more of a challenge and gives them mental stimulation and physical stimulation.

The bears' keepers have previously put food in a shaker, chopped it into tiny pieces to make it harder to find, and given them piles of wood shavings scented with essential oils.

But their favourite treat is elephant dung.

Ms McCleery said: "They love it for some reason. They roll around in it and absolutely stink for the rest of the day."

Nellie came to the park nearly two years ago and gave birth to Loki in January, named after the Norse god of mischief because he displayed naughty characteristics.

"It was quite suited to him, he is always in some kind of trouble," Ms McCleery said."

Grönland taut....The Melting of Greenland's Ice Shield

Here the NASA text about the phenomenon

Extent of surface melt over Greenland’s ice sheet on July 8 (left) and July 12 (right). Measurements from three satellites showed that on July 8, about 40 percent of the ice sheet had undergone thawing at or near the surface. In just a few days, the melting had dramatically accelerated and an estimated 97 percent of the ice sheet surface had thawed by July 12. In the image, the areas classified as “probable melt” (light pink) correspond to those sites where at least one satellite detected surface melting. The areas classified as “melt” (dark pink) correspond to sites where two or three satellites detected surface melting. The satellites are measuring different physical properties at different scales and are passing over Greenland at different times. As a whole, they provide a picture of an extreme melt event about which scientists are very confident. Credit: Nicolo E. DiGirolamo, SSAI/NASA GSFC, and Jesse Allen, NASA Earth Observatory

For several days this month, Greenland's surface ice cover melted over a larger area than at any time in more than 30 years of satellite observations. Nearly the entire ice cover of Greenland, from its thin, low-lying coastal edges to its two-mile-thick center, experienced some degree of melting at its surface, according to measurements from three independent satellites analyzed by NASA and university scientists.

On average in the summer, about half of the surface of Greenland's ice sheet naturally melts. At high elevations, most of that melt water quickly refreezes in place. Near the coast, some of the melt water is retained by the ice sheet and the rest is lost to the ocean. But this year the extent of ice melting at or near the surface jumped dramatically. According to satellite data, an estimated 97 percent of the ice sheet surface thawed at some point in mid-July.

Researchers have not yet determined whether this extensive melt event will affect the overall volume of ice loss this summer and contribute to sea level rise.

"The Greenland ice sheet is a vast area with a varied history of change. This event, combined with other natural but uncommon phenomena, such as the large calving event last week on Petermann Glacier, are part of a complex story," said Tom Wagner, NASA's cryosphere program manager in Washington. "Satellite observations are helping us understand how events like these may relate to one another as well as to the broader climate system."

Son Nghiem of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., was analyzing radar data from the Indian Space Research Organisation's (ISRO) Oceansat-2 satellite last week when he noticed that most of Greenland appeared to have undergone surface melting on July 12. Nghiem said, "This was so extraordinary that at first I questioned the result: was this real or was it due to a data error?"

Nghiem consulted with Dorothy Hall at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. Hall studies the surface temperature of Greenland using the Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA's Terra and Aqua satellites. She confirmed that MODIS showed unusually high temperatures and that melt was extensive over the ice sheet surface.

Thomas Mote, a climatologist at the University of Georgia, Athens, Ga; and Marco Tedesco of City University of New York also confirmed the melt seen by Oceansat-2 and MODIS with passive-microwave satellite data from the Special Sensor Microwave Imager/Sounder on a U.S. Air Force meteorological satellite.

The melting spread quickly. Melt maps derived from the three satellites showed that on July 8, about 40 percent of the ice sheet's surface had melted. By July 12, 97 percent had melted.

This extreme melt event coincided with an unusually strong ridge of warm air, or a heat dome, over Greenland. The ridge was one of a series that has dominated Greenland's weather since the end of May. "Each successive ridge has been stronger than the previous one," said Mote. This latest heat dome started to move over Greenland on July 8, and then parked itself over the ice sheet about three days later. By July 16, it had begun to dissipate.

Even the area around Summit Station in central Greenland, which at 2 miles above sea level is near the highest point of the ice sheet, showed signs of melting. Such pronounced melting at Summit and across the ice sheet has not occurred since 1889, according to ice cores analyzed by Kaitlin Keegan at Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H. A National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration weather station at Summit confirmed air temperatures hovered above or within a degree of freezing for several hours July 11-12.

"Ice cores from Summit show that melting events of this type occur about once every 150 years on average. With the last one happening in 1889, this event is right on time," says Lora Koenig, a Goddard glaciologist and a member of the research team analyzing the satellite data. "But if we continue to observe melting events like this in upcoming years, it will be worrisome."

Nghiem's finding while analyzing Oceansat-2 data was the kind of benefit that NASA and ISRO had hoped to stimulate when they signed an agreement in March 2012 to cooperate on Oceansat-2 by sharing data.

Let the Games begin!....Venus and Pentu just having fun!

Photo: Zoo Ranua

With the Olympics just two days away, here some great pics of Venus and Pentu from Zoo Ranua in Finland, obviously enjoying their special enrichment program due to the upcoming event..

A polar bear cub at Ranua Zoo in Lapland has been captivated by a Finnish flag and a set of tyres painted to look like Olympic rings. The cub’s curiosity doesn’t stem from a love of sports -- for Pentu it's all about having fun.
Photo: Zoo Ranua

"The polar bears at the Ranua zoo have caught a fever -- Olympic fever. Zoo keepers have ensured that the bears have not been left out of the Olympic excitement in Finland.

The ursine mammals are observing the event in their own way – with a set of used tyres painted in the colours of the Olympic rings. While the tyres are a reminder of the upcoming games, they also double as a handy set of toys for the junior member of the family.

“The idea for the Olympic rings came from the pup itself. Pentu (the cub) has doubled the number visitors we get daily in July. Normally we have one thousand visitors a day, but now we have a few thousand,” explained zookeeper Pertti Saarijärvi.

The novelty of the rings caught the fancy of the young cub immediately, and according to Saarijärvi, the young bear even puts them around his neck.

Pentu was equally fascinated by the replica of a Finnish flag, often carrying it on his head as he prowls along the enclosure and occasionally chewing on the fabric.

“Pentu really represents Finland here in Ranua. He has received a great deal of international visibility and is therefore a representative of Finland,” Saarijärvi declared."
