03.05.2008 - Olaf im Regenbogenland..in Rainbowland now....

"Polar bears rarely live beyond 25 years.[65] The oldest wild bear on record died at the age of 32, and the oldest captive at 41.[65]

Denver Zoo polar bear dies

A polar bear named Olaf, who lived at the Denver Zoo for the past 21 years, died Saturday, the zoo announced.

Olaf, who was 22, fathered well-known and widely loved zoo cubs Klondike and Snow, and Ulaq and Berit.

Olaf had been lethargic and not eating well lately, zoo officials said in a press release, and a medical examination Friday revealed a massive, cancerous tumor in his liver.

He was euthanized Saturday, zoo officials said.

"This is a very sad loss for Denver Zoo and our community," said Denver Zoo president Craig Piper. "Olaf will be missed by all of us, including the many families and children who have visited him over the years."

The longevity of polar bears in captivity is typically 20 to 25 years.

"Often with wild animals, they do not show symptoms of illness until they are quite ill. This was the case with our valiant Olaf, who showed no signs of illness until quite recently, despite having terminal liver cancer. He was such a good bear," said senior veterinarian David Kenny.

Kenny was Olaf's veterinarian for 21 years.

While at Denver Zoo, Olaf fathered four cubs with his first mate, Ulu, including the famous siblings Klondike and Snow, who were born Nov. 6, 1994, the zoo said.

Olaf and Ulu had a second pair of cubs, Berit and Ulaq, born Dec. 28, 1998. Ulu died in June 2000.
