Sad news from Budapest... Bimba RIP!

Bimba, die erst vor einem Monat aus Pistoia nach Budapest umgezogen war, ist völlig überraschend letzten Dienstag gestorben. Sie hatte erst Montag abend zuvor die ersten Anzeichen einer Erkrankung gezeigt. Bei einer Autopsie wurde Leberkrebs im Endstadium festgestellt. Laut Homepage des Zoo Budapest kann bei einer routinemäßigen Untersuchung diese Krebsart nicht erkannt werden. -

Bimba, who moved only last month from Pistoia in Toscany to Budapest, died suddenly on Tuesday. It was only Monday evening, that she showed signs of illness. According to an autopsy, she was in the final stages of liver cancer. According to the Zoo’s web page, routine examinations cannot detect this kind of cancer.

Bimba wurde am 6. Dezember 1987 in Pistoia geboren, wo sie bis auf die letzen 4 Wochen Zeit ihres Lebens verbracht hat. Sie war die Tochter von Eisbärin Miska, geboren 1968 und 1998 verstorben im Alter von 30 Jahren. Ihr Vater war Eisbär Romeo, der im Alter von 22 Jahren im Jahr 2000 verstarb. In Pistoia brachte Bimba 1999 Yoghi und 2006 Blizzard zur Welt.

Bimba was born in Pistoia on December 6, 1987 where she had spent her entire life until last month. Her mother was Miska, born in 1968 and deceased in 1998. Her father was Romeo, who died at age 22 in 2000. It was in Pistoia where she gave birth to Yoghi in 1999 and to Blizzard in 2006.

Yoghi, der berühmte Yoghi, der nun mit Knuts früherer Gespielin Giovanna lebt, war der Sohn von Romeo, der auch gleichzeitig sein Opa war. Und um es noch zuzuspitzen, er widerum ist nicht nur der Bruder, sondern auch der Vater von Blizzard.

Yoghi, the very famous Yoghi, now living with Knut's ex-mate Giovanna in Munich was fathered by his grand-father Romeo. And to make things worse, Yoghi himself fathered Blizzard when he was just 6 years old, which makes him brother and father at the same time.

Doch für diese ganze Inzuchtarie kann Bimba nichts. Sie war beiden eine gute Mutter und galt immer als liebe und verträgliche Eisbärin, unkompliziert im Kontakt und leicht umgänglich.-

However, this case of downright incest was not the fault of Bimba. She was a good mother to both of them, she was known as a gentle, affectionate polar bear who liked to socialise and who was easy to handle.

Da man in Pistoia die Haltung von Eisbären zugunsten der von Braunbären und Pinguinen aufgegeben hat, musste Bimba letzten Monat am 4. April nach Budapest umziehen. Das Foto oben zeigt sie vor dem Umzug, vor dem Transport hatte man sie narkotisiert, die Fahrt verbrachte sie wach.-

As the zoo wants to engage more for brown bears and their conservation in the region, polar bear husbandry was ended in Pistoia. Decision was taken to move Bimba to Budapest. She was relocated only one month ago on 4 April. Above photo shows her before the transport, she had been anesthetised to get her into the crate, while traveling she was awake.

Wie man bei Ulli J. nachlesen kann, war Bimba gut in Budapest angekommen. Sie wurde auf der fast 1000 km langen Fahrt von der Toscana nach Budapest von vier Mitarbeitern aus Pistoia begleitet. In den ersten Tagen war sie für die Zoobesucher nicht zu sehen, da sie zur Eingewöhnung in einem Innengehege untergebracht war. Seit Freitag, dem 8. April, war sie bereits auf der Eisbärenanlage des Zoos Budapest zu sehen. Sie hatte ein eigenes Gehege, getrennt von Lady und Vitus, von dem aus sie die beiden anderen Eisbären aber sehen konnte.-

In Ulli J's blog it was reported that Bimba had made a safe journey to Budapest, attended by four keepers during her 700 mile journey from Toscany to her new home. For the first few days, she was kept in the inner enclosure of the exhibit, not yet visible for zoo visitors. Since Friday, 8 April, she had been public at the Budapest Zoo. She had a private enclosure, separate from Lady and Vitus, although they were able to see each other.

Bimba schien sich zunächst in ihrem neuen Zuhause wohlzufühlen, ganz besonders genoss sie das Schwimmen in dem Wasserbecken der Eisbärenanlage. -

At first Bimba had seemed at ease in her new home, she enjoyed especially swimming in the polar bear exhibit’s pool.

Man hatte in Budapest auf Nachwuchs von Bimba und dem 19 jährigen Vitus, einem Ur-Kölner, gehofft. Bei einer Fruchtwasseruntersuchung im Januar 2009, war festgestellt worden, dass Lady, die letzte waschechte Budapesterin, keinen Nachwuchs haben kann. Bimba sollte hier einspringen, und Lady ersetzen, deren Umzug nach Bratislava geplant war.-

In Budapest, it was very much hoped that Bimba and the 19 years old Vitus, originally from Cologne, would produce some long expected offspring. In January 2009 the zoo in Budapest had arranged for an amniocentesis to find out why Vitus and Lady hadn't come up with cubs during their long relationship. The examination revealed that Lady, the last offspring from Budapest, can't get pregnant. Bimba was supposed to step in and to replace Lady who was to go to Bratislava.

Laut einer Entscheidung des EEP-Koordinator wurde der Transfer von Lady in ihr neues Zuhause jedoch 9 Stunden vor der geplanten Fahrt gestoppt, obwohl der Umzug mit dem EEP Koordinator vorher abgesprochen worden war und das Gehege, wo sie dort untergebracht werden sollte, von ihm auch als geeignet angesehen wurde. In beiden Zoos war schon alles für die Abreise/Ankunft vorbereitet. In Bratislava war das Gehege schon hergerichtet und die Medien über die Ankunft informiert. Den Zoos sind die Gründe für die Entscheidung nicht mitgeteilt worden. Mittlerweile ist Lady nicht mehr in Budapest, ihr jetziger Aufenthaltsort ist noch ein Rätsel. -

But according to a decision from the coordinator of EEP (European Endangered Species Program) the transfer of Lady to Bratislava Zoo was stopped only nine hours before her transport was supposed to take place, although the relocation of Lady had been agreed with the EEP Coordinator, the enclosure was prepared and had been judged suitable. Both zoos were ready for the exchange. In Bratislava the accommodation was ready and the media had been informed of her arrival. The zoos weren’t informed about the reasons for this incomprehensible decision. After further consultation with Amsterdam, Lady stayed in Budapest, in the meantime she has left the zoo but it is not clear to which zoo she was eventually transferred.

Der unerwartete Tod Bimbas ist ein Schock und ein schmerzhafter Verlust für den Zoo in Budapest und auch in Pistoia. Besonders traurig ist nun die Situation für Vitus, er ist nun alleine, ohne seine langjährige Partnerin Lady und ohne Bimba. -

The unexpected death of Bimba is a choc and a painful loss for the Zoo in Budapest and in Pistoia. Particularlay sad is now the situation for Vitus, he is now alone, without his long-time mate Lady and without Bimba.

Heute mal Querbeet: Blizzard, Kap, Maika, Bimba & Simba..

Dies ist ein Beitrag, der so gar nicht geplant war, und schon gar nicht so durcheinander, aber ein paar Bezugsmomente gibt es doch, und so hab ich dann gedacht, warum eigentlich nicht Querbeet...

Beginnen will ich mit Blizzard, der heute 4 geworden ist, fast übersehen von mir, die gedacht hat, dass der letzte 4 Jahres-Geburtstag Hudson am 14.12. gewesen sei. Ulli J hat mich drauf aufmerksam gemacht...und konsequenterweise habe ich mir daraufhin mal eben gleich ein sehr schönes Foto bei ihr ausgeborgt...

This is a contribution which was not planned and certainly not mixed like that , but somehow there are connections and so I then thought, why not...

I will start with Blizzard, who turned 4 today, almost overlooked by me who had thought that it was Hudson to be the last bear celebrating a four years anniversary this year. Fortunately Ulli J, alerted me on it ... consequently, the nice photo below I've borrowed from her...

Dieser hübsche Eisbär wurde in Pistoia/Italien geboren, und wie wir mittlerweile fast alle wissen sind seine Eltern Bimba und Yoghi.-

This good-looking polar bear was born in Pistoia/ Italy, and as nearly all of us know already, his parents are Bimba and Yoghi.-

Kurz vor seinem heutigen Geburtstag hat Blizzard Schlagzeilen gemacht, seit dem 09.12. ist er nämlich in Rostock, wo er bald mit der 22 jährigen Vienna bekannt gemacht werden und für Nachwuchs sorgen soll. Vienna hat bereits mit Churchill sechsmal Nachwuchs gehabt, in den letzten Jahren konnten die beiden aber nicht mehr zusammen gehalten werden, nachdem Churchill (31) sie 2006 angegriffen und schwer verletzt hatte, er lebt seither immer noch in einem Einzelgehege, der ziemlich kleinen Mutter-Kind-Anlage des Zoos.

Ihre Tochter Vilma lebt seit Freitag, 10. Dezember 2010, im Zoo Wuppertal , wo sie gestern ihr Debut hatte und bald mit Lars zusammengeführt werden soll. -

Shortly before his birthday today, Blizzard made headlines as since December 9 he is in Rostock, where he will soon be introduced to the 22-year-old Vienna in order to provide some more offspring. Vienna has already brought up six young,all fathered by Churchill (31), but has lived separated from him after Churchill had attacked her in 2006, he lives still alone in the small enclosure for mothers and cubs.

It is their daughter Vilma who was moved on Friday 10 December to Zoo Wuppertal, where she had her debut yesterday and will soon become Lars' new lady-friend.

Blizzard gilt als sehr sozial und verträglich, bislang hat er mit Mutter Bimba zusammengelebt.

In Pistoia will man übrigens die Eisbärenhaltung aufgeben und sucht nun noch einen Platz für Blizzards Mutter Bimba, die am 06. Dezember 23 wurde und immer in Pistoia gelebt hat.-

Blizzard is regarded as very social and friendly, before he was transferred he had lived with his mother Bimba who turned 23 on 6 December and who has always been living in Pistoia. Aber es gibt noch ein Geburtstagskind heute, Kap aus Neumünster, nein, nicht der Herr oben rechts, das ist der Noch-Zoodirektor Drüwa, uns allen bekannt v.a. aus der Phase, als Berlin und Neumünster noch um die rechtmäßigen Eigentumsverhältnisse an Knut gerichtlich gerungen haben. Für ihn ist dieser Monat sein letzter als Zoodirektor in Neumünster, ein Nachfolger steht noch nicht fest. Wir gehen jetzt mal davon aus, dass Herr Drüwa nicht auch heute Geburtstag hat und mit Kap feiert, der übrigens oben am Zaun steht. Es gäbe einiges zu feiern in diesen Tagen, denn das Eisbärgelände soll umgestaltet und erweitert werden, der größte Teil der Kosten wird durch die im Prozeß um Knut festgelegte Summe von Euro 430 000 gedeckt, die der Berliner Zoo für Knut bezahlt hat. Die ersten Arbeiten haben schon begonnen, der frühe Wintereinbruch wird allerdings mit Sicherheit zu Verzögerungen beitragen.-

But there is another birthday today, Kap from Neumünster....,no, not the man on the right, that is Mr. Drüwa, the still-in-charge-director of Zoo Neumünster, known from the times of the court case between Berlin and Neumünster concerning the rightful ownership of Knut. It's his last month in office for him, a successor has not yet been identified. We just assume that today is neither Mr. Drüwa's birthday nor that he is celebrating it together with Kap, who by the way is the one at the fence in pic above. There would be a lot to celebrate these days, because the polar bear site will eventually be redesigned and expanded, the bulk of the costs will be covered from the Euro 430,000 settlement with Zoo Berlin for Knut. The first works have already begun, the early onset of winter is, however, delaying the project.

Kap wurde 2000 in Moskau geboren und kam bereits im November 2001 nach Karlsruhe. Seit dem 23.04.2004 lebt er in Neumünster in einer Eisbärenanlage, die allgemein als zu klein und wenig stimulierend beschrieben wird. Die Aussicht auf mehr Platz dürfte von ihm mit Sicherheit als Geburtstagsgeschenk betrachtet werden.-

Kap was born 2000 in Moscow, already in November 2001 he came to Karlsruhe. Since 22 April 2004 he lives in Neumünster in an polar bear enclosure, generally described as too small and not very stimulating. The prospect of more space will certainly be considered by him as a birthday gift.

Doch die Stimmung ist getrübt, denn Kaps Mitbewohnerin Maika (27) ist ernstlich erkrankt und muss schon seit Tagen gefüttert werden.-

"Unserem Oldie geht es sehr schlecht. Sie muss per Hand vom Pfleger gefüttert werden und ist sehr schlapp", sagt Direktor Dr. Peter Drüwa betrübt. Die Diagnose: Entzündung der Gebärmutter. Eine Operation würde das Tier, das aus dem DDR-Nationalzirkus stammt und seit sechs Jahren in Neumünster lebt, wohl nicht überleben. " (Quelle)

Auch Maika hätte jetzt erst am 10.12.2010 Geburtstag feiern können. Sie ist eine gebürtige Leipzigerin, ihre Mutter ist 'Die Kleine' und der Vater 'Der Große'. Ein Jahr lebte sie in Leipzig bevor es dann am 17.12.1984 für ca. 11 Jahre zum Zirkus ging . 1995 kam sie in den Zoo Berlin, von wo aus es dann am 03.06.2004 nach Neumünster zu Kap ging.

Wir möchten von hier aus Maika alles Gute wünschen, wir hoffen sehr, dass sie sich erholt und dass sie ihre letzten Jahre auch noch in dem größeren Gehege gesund verleben kann!

Doch kommen wir nun von Maika zu 'Simba'...Dies ist eine spezielle Geschichte...-

But the mood is clouded because Kaps roommate Maika (27) is seriously ill...-

"Our oldy is doing very poorly. She must be fed by hand from the keeper and is very limp and weak," says director Dr. Peter Drüwa. The diagnosis: inflammation of the uterus. An operation would certainly not be survived by Maika, who came from the East German National Circus, and living now for six years in Neumünster. "(Source)

Maika's 27th birthday was on 10.12.2010. She is a native of Leipzig with mother 'Die Kleine' (The Little') and father 'Der Große' ('The Great'). One year she lived in Leipzig before she was sent on 17 December 1984 to work in a circus, for about 11 years. In 1995 she came to Zoo Berlin, and on 3 June 2004 she joined Kap at Neumünster.

From here all the best to Maika, we hope that she will recover, and that she will be able to enjoy her last years in good health in the larger enclosure!

But let's come to Simba now...which is a sort of a special story ...

Das ist Simba, eine Halbschwester von Maika, sie haben mit "Der Große" den gleichen Vater und stammen beide aus Leipzig. Simba wurde am 05.12.1986 geboren, ihre Mutter ist "D". Beide Elternteile wurden 1968 geboren und starben 1989. Bis 1990 war Simba in Leipzig, seit dem 22.10.1990 lebt sie in Palic, und zwar seit dem 25.11.1997 zusammen mit dem am 07.11.1986 im Tierpark geborenen Björn-Heinrich, einer Handaufzucht, der in Palic Bo genannt wird. Sie sind die Eltern des ebenfalls 4 Jahre alt gewordenen Joreks (der früher Cuker hieß) und der seit dem 27.02.2008 im Nyíregyházi Állatpark (Sóstó Zoo) lebt. -

This is Simba, a half sister of Maika, with "Der Große" they share the same father, both were born in Leipzig. Simba was born on 05.12.1986, her mother is "D". Both parents were born in 1968 and died in 1989. Until 1990 Simba lived in Leipzig, then she was transferred to Palic in Serbia where she spent her last 20 years, joined in 1997 by Björn Heinrich, called Bo in Palic. Bo was born on 07.11.1986 and hand reared at Tierpark Berlin. They are the parents of 4 year old Jorek (formerly called Cuker) who was sent in February 2007 to Nyíregyházi Állatpark (Sóstó Zoo).

Diese beiden Fotos habe ich letzte Woche von Mirjana Alpovic aus dem Zoo in Palic geschickt bekommen, sie zeigen Simba dieses Jahr im Sommer. Geschrieben hatte ich ihr, weil ich wissen wollte, was es mit dem Namen Simba auf sich hat, denn erst letztes Jahr stolperte ich zum ersten Mal darüber, im Zuchtbuch ist ihr Name mit 'Leipzig 15 ' angegeben, und in der Korrespondenz zu Cuker vor 2 Jahren hieß sie noch nicht Simba (Dann hätten wir nämlich mit Sicherheit einen Riesenartikel geschrieben!). Viel konnte sie mir dazu auch nicht sagen, außer dass es keinerlei Dokumente gibt, die den Namen tragen, aber sie schien sich durch andere diesbezügliche Nachfragen mittlerweile bereits selbst an den Namen gewöhnt zu haben, denn die Bilder schickte sie mit dem Vermerk "Here is "Simba" enjoying watermelon this summer." -

These two photos I got last week from Mirjana Alpovic from the zoo in Palic, showing Simba this summer. I was interested in hearing more about the background of this special first name as it was only last year that I stumbled for the first time upon it. In the International Studbook her name is specified with 'Leipzig 15', and in the correspondence concerning Cuker 2 years ago she was not yet Simba (You can bet, I would have made a big deal about it..!). Mrs. Alpovic confirmed that there are no documents bearing the name Simba, but what was interesting, at least she herself seemed to have gotten used to the name due to other related inquiries recently, as the photos were sent with the note "Here is" Simba "enjoying watermelon this summer. "

Also nun ist es verbrieft und versiegelt, offenbar können wir sie ruhig weiter Simba nennen, was mich ganz besonders freut...Und Neuigkeiten zu ihr und Bo gibt es auch: Simba erwartet nämlich zur Zeit ebenfalls Nachwuchs...!

So now it is sealed, it appears we can just continue calling her Simba, which especially our outpost considers as a pleasure...And there are also some more news: Simba is expecting...!

So fingers are crossed, not only for Simba but for all bears mentioned here!

Und hier noch eine kleine Randbemerkung, der Zoo Rostock ist dieses Jahr übrigens 111 Jahre alt geworden, wie sagt man bloß Schnapszahl auf Englisch?:) -

One brief side note, the zoo in Rostock turned 111 this year, so I wanted to look up our funny term 'Schnapszahl' in English, but it seems that when it comes to numbers the English are not that funny, or have you heard something different for a "multidigit number with identical digits"?
