Out of the Blue...? Rumours & Theories - Aus heiterem Himmel...?....Gerüchte und Theorien

19.03.2011

On Saturday, 19 March Knut died unexpectedly in the afternoon in front of 600-700 visitors at his enclosure in the zoo. Immediately after there were many different speculations about the death cause. For today, Thursday, 31 March, a press conference was announced, as for today the final test results from the Berlin Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research were expected. The findings, in fact, were handed over today, but for technical reasons the press conference has been postponed until tomorrow 10.30. Please find following the press releases as published after the first exams so far. And let's see what will bring tomorrow.

Pressemitteilung vom 22.03.2011

Press Release 22.03.2011

After Knut's death a necrospy was performed yesterday on March 21st at Leibniz-Institut für Zoo- und Wildtierforschung. Initial findings showed significant changes to the brain, which can be viewed as a reason for the polar bear's sudden death. The pathologists have not found other alterations of organs. Further analyses (Bacteriology, Histology) will take a few more days. We will inform you about the final result.

(siehe auch Nürnberger Zeitung/30.03. und Tagesspiegel 31.03.2011)

Although the final result was not expected until today, already yesterday a dpa (German Press Agency) report circulated in the press about an alleged "deadly enlargement of the cerebral fluid chambers. " This report was denied today by the Berlin Zoo.

The report stated that "the pressure conditions in the brain were changed so dramatically that the animal would have died inevitable even if it had kept firm ground under his feet and wouldn't have plunged into the water. Such changes in the brain ventricles can occur in other animal species and in humans too, due to different reasons."

"Neither indications of severe stress were found in the analysis of the brain sections and other organs as for example in the adrenal glands, ... nor any evidence of an epileptic seizure or classical genetic defects. Animal Right activist groups had
(wrongly!) suspected that Knut's death had been the result of incest. Knut-father Lars was said to have derived from an inbred connection, and that of 9 polar bears fathered by him 7 had died prematurely. "

19.03.2011

Whatever outcome the press conference tomorrow will bring, I doubt it will end the speculations, I doubt it will ease the pain and I doubt we will ever understand why Knut had to go so young. But maybe it's just about that, to accept once again that we can't control Nature and that sometimes a life span is just short.

That's how they should look...!

"Oil patches cover a northern rockhopper penguin on March 23, a week after a cargo vessel slammed into Nightingale Island in the South Atlantic, initiating a roughly 1,500-ton of fuel-oil spill, according to the U.K.-based Royal Society for the Protection of Birds.

The island, part of the British territory of Tristan da Cunha , is home to 200,000 northern rockhopper penguins, half the world's population. The International Union for Conservation of Nature lists the bird as endangered, due to its mysteriously rapid decline in the past three decades.

On March 18, two days after it had run aground, the Malta-registered "M.S. Oliva broke her back in the force of a relentless swell," leaking oil that spread into an 8-mile (13-kilometer) slick, according to the bird-protection group and the Tristan da Cunha government's website. However the slick seemed to have mostly dissipated by March 23.

Some 65,300 tons of unprocessed soybeans also spilled from into the ocean, and the vegetables' impact to the sensitive marine environment are unknown, the government's website said.

Hundreds of oiled birds are washing ashore, and a preliminary estimate suggests up to 20,000 birds may have been affected, according to the government's website.

"The scene at Nightingale is dreadful," Trevor Glass, the conservation officer for the territory, said in a statement.

The "grave environmental disaster" may also reach ecosystems of the nearby Inaccessible and Gough islands, both UN World Heritage sites, according to the government's website."

Additional note: The rescue teams need urgently more cleaning material, due to the remoteness of the island it takes several days until a second vessel will be there from Capetown...It is simply heartbreaking, especially when you have already seen wild life photos of people who have either the privilege to work there or who have visited the islands by sailing boat....

Zeit-Umstellung...Looking back on time adjustments

I have to admit that I wasn't sure at all if to use the collage concerning the change to daylight saving time, I found it 3 years ago in a newspaper but never posted it. Last year I missed the change altogether, and the year before, I searched like crazy, in vain, for this picture on my hard disk, and now, in connection with Knut's death, it gets a whole new dimension. Nevertheless I have decided for it, because I think it's just so sweet and Knut has actually slept in the mornings after the change to daylight saving time - sure, it didn't affect him at all, different then when the clocks were turned back ...

Here is another collage of 2009 ...

And for all who want to know what's the time in the outpost Rodrigues, now we are just 2 hours in advance of Germany, in winter we get back to 3 hours in advance.

Letzte Grüße auch aus Alaska ....A last Farewell from Alaska too...

Not only in Berlin Knut has left his prints, friends from all over the world have contacted me and told how much the news of Knut's death affected them. I would like to thank everybody, it has helped me during the first days, when my pain seemed to be unbearable. By the way, one of the first reactions came from Japan, a friend who is about to leave Japan for good after all the events of disaster, has expressed in his own difficult time, yet how sad he was by the news of Knut's death. Earlier this week my friend David Booth from Alaska sent me his last tribute . It needs no words.

David sent me also a reminder of this year's Earth Hour which will take place as every year at 8:30 pm. So please, turn off your lights today, Saturday at 8:30 pm, whereever you are. For one hour...Thank you!

Knut - Der Botschafter....The Ambassador

Jens last day with Knut

"Through my many trips to the polar bears in this country, there is still one day remaining so far, a day I haven't shown yet. As it turned out, it was my last visit to Knut. I would like to share with you how the little bear will remain forever in my memory. I hope, despite all discussions about Knut, his zoo, his enclosure or what might have or should have been done, that he remains as what he did at his best, being an ambassador of its kind. A symbol of the incredible human interference in the climate of the earth, a cry for help to save the species polar bear and a reminder of what we will take away from our children and grandchildren, if reason and rethinking is not quickly established in all heads, countries and businesses. Knut has gone from us, his relatives do not want that and we are the last generation to change that."

There is a condolence book in the zoo at the Lion's Gate.

Since Monday Knut's friends can also leave their last farewell to Knut in the online condolence-book which Zoo Berlin has opened here. I wish very much that the Zoo will keep this book online so that one can share thoughts and feelings even later, and read about the traces Knut left in the hearts of so many people around the world. It would be so sad to lose this collective tribute to a polar bear who was just unique and special in so many ways.

Kein Ort Nirgends....No Place Anywhere....

Heute...Today

Gestern...Yesterday

I
have no words to express my thoughts and feelings since the moment I have learned of Knut's death. So many images of him during the last four years are in me, and will always remain in me. The delicacy, softness and tenderness of that bear have always touched me most, it has not yet reached my mind that he is no more, that he never again will play obliviously with a stick, as he did shortly before his death.

I can't help to think of the many people in Japan who have lost everything
within the few minutes the earthquake and tsunami struck , their homes, their families, their loved ones. A few minutes have changed everything, so that nothing was, is and will be the same before. Many have to say farewell in the barest form ever, the tsunami destroyed the hope to pay last respects by burying the people and animals who have been dear, photos and other personal items of sentimental value are gone - lost forever.

No place anywhere is preparing us for all the pain when we lose a loved one,
no
place will ever be the same again.

Mourning is an island - memories the world.

We must embrace pain and burn it as fuel for our journey.

Kein Mond und keine Sterne....

Knut on his last day

"There are moments in life
when the world stops rotating for a moment.

...And when it continues to rotate,
nothing will be like before."

- Christina M -
No moon and no stars were visible in the sky when I looked outside yesterday. It was about the time when Knut in Berlin Zoo collapsed and toppled into the water. 15.22 Berlin time, in his outpost in Rodrigues it was 3 hours later, already evening, there were rough winds because of Cheromo, a moderate tropical storm. A particularly large moon yesterday should be seen as close to Earth as it occured about 19 years ago. A moon, which some made think of end times. Especially 8 days after the horrific earthquake and tsunami in Japan, followed by the nuclear threat.

I intended to have a look today at the Saturday photos made by Christina, almost always when there was a special moon constellation, she had taken pictures.

I was hoping for a Knut with Moon as he himself was in the process of becoming a star ...

I love you.

Farewell, Adieu and Rest in Peace, my little big bear,
I never had the pleasure of meeting you in bearson.
