Zoo versteckt den verletzten Bären

Die Nachricht, dass im Moskauer Zoo ein Eisbär aus einer Kleinkaliberwaffe verwundet wurde,verursachte eine vernünftige Empörung in der Gesellschaft. Die Trud- Korres-pondentin erfuhr, wo das Tier jetzt ist und warum die Verwaltung der Einrichtung die Tatsache des Beschusses heute verneint.

Vor den Eisbärgehegen im Moskauer Zoo sind besonders viele Menschen.Erwachsene kamen gemeinsam mit ihren Kindern, um den hauptsächlichen Liebling der Besucher, den Bären Wrangel, aufzusuchen, nachdem die Nachricht vom Beschuss des Tieres sich in der ganzen Stadt verbreitet hatte. Doch im Gehege war er nicht. "Lebt er überhaupt?" – unterhalten sich neben den Käfigen mit den Raubtieren junge Mütter. Über das Schicksal des Bären befragen Besucher Angestellte des Zoos und sogar die Popcornverkäufer, doch die zucken nur die Schultern. Übrigens gibt es eine klare Antwort auf diese Fragen auch nicht in der Verwaltung des Zoos. Die Mitarbeiterin des Pressedienstes des Zoos, Raïsa Koroljewa, erzählte "Trud", dass den Bären möglicherweise niemand aus einer Kleinkaliberwaffe beschossen hat. "Die kleinen blutenden Wunden, die auf seiner Haut entdeckt wurden – das sind nur entzündliche Affektionen der Haut. Wrangel ist hochbetagt, er ist schon 20 Jahre alt", gab sie die offizielle Version wieder. Genau klären, ob auf Wrangel geschossen wurde oder nicht, können weder der Dienst, der eine "interne Untersuchung" vornahm, noch die Tierärzte, die den Bären betrachteten. Wo ist Wrangel?

Der genesende Bär lebt nicht mit seinen Artgenossen, sondern wird separat gehalten, in einem geschlossenen Gebäude. Wie Raïsa Koroljewa erklärte, besteht die Ursache dafür nicht in seinem Zustand, sondern darin, dass das Gehege jetzt einfach überbesetzt ist. Dort werden die jungen Bären gehalten und vorläufig gibt es für sie keinen anderen Platz. Wrangel wird dort nicht wieder hineingesteckt. Die "Trud"-Korrespondentin, die im Zoo war, entdeckte im Gehege nur einen jungen Bären und zwei weitere erwachsene Tiere. Zwei Gehege mit viel Platz, die durch einen gemeinsamen Gang miteinander verbunden sind und bei dieser Zahl an Bewohnern überhaupt nicht überbesetzt aussahen. "Sie wollen die Sache vertuschen", sagt ein Zoomitarbeiter, der anonym bleiben möchte. "Der Schuß konnte nur aus einem Haus abgegeben werden.

Feststellen, aus welchem Fenster das geschah, kann sogar ein Polizist aus dem zuständigen Polizeirevier. Das Stadtviertel ist elitär, hier wohnen Leute, die nicht arm sind und sich viel erlauben. Da wollte jemand im Zentrum von Moskau einen Bären jagen und jetzt beabsichtigt man offenbar, die Untat zu verbergen."

Zoo Says Bear Wasn't Shot, Maybe

The Moscow Zoo on Monday distanced itself from an earlier statement that a sniper had shot at one of its polar bears.

"At this stage we can neither confirm nor deny that the animal was hit by bullets," zoo spokeswoman Yelena Mendosa told The Moscow Times.

The zoo said in a statement on its web site late last week that a 20-year-old polar bear named Wrangel had some 11 wounds that must have been inflicted by bullets from a small-caliber gun.

The statement, along with photos of the bleeding wounds, was still on the zoo's site Monday.

But Mendosa said no bullets had been found and the wounds might stem from a skin infection. She added that the bleeding had stopped and the bear was doing fine.

"He eats, drinks and is behaving like normal," she said.

She explained that the sniper theory had been the result of a preliminary analysis by the zoo's guards. "Our experts are continuing to look into this case, she said.

But Mendosa warned that it would be difficult to make definite conclusions because this required analyzing the bear's skin — a task that is impossible without anesthetic.

The bear is considered too old to be tranquilized. "We would not risk that," she said.

Mendosa also confirmed that the wounds were discovered in late October, even though the statement about the gunshots was published Thursday.

She said Wrangel had been kept in a special cage out of visitors' sight because the zoo considered it dangerous to keep a full-grown male in the main cage with several cubs.

The isolated cage, however, was visible from an apartment block opposite the zoo, leading to the theory that shots had been fired from the building.

Aber noch am selben Tag gab es Dementis...Es ist eine merkwürdige Geschichte, wirr und widersprüchlich.... Aber nun erstmal der Artikel, der gestern zuerst in der Weltpresse kursierte.

"Vets are tending to a Polar bear which was shot at Moscow Zoo by an unidentified gunman in late October, the Moscow government's information center reported, quoting zoo officials.

The male bear, called Vrangel, is suffering from multiple wounds and doctors are trying to prevent inflammation, a statement said.

Zoo officials believe the bear was shot by a someone in a building near the zoo.

"We express our deep indignation over the behavior of those who committed this indecent action. The 'sniper' probably thinks he is some kind of hero. But there is nothing heroic about shooting a helpless animal from a distance," zoo employees said. (source)

Doch kaum wollte ich die Meldung posten, stieß ich auf Meldungen, die die urspüngliche Sniper- Theorie entkräfteten. In Kurzform liest sich das nun folgendermaßen:

Ende Oktober habe man Wrangel mit 11 Löchern in seinem Fell vorgefunden, die von der Größe her von einer kleinkalibrigen Schusswaffe hätten stammen können. Eine visuelle tierärztliche Inspektion ergaben: zwei Löcher am Maul, zwei hinterm Ohr, drei am rechten Schulterblatt und vier am linken Schulterblatt. Man habe aber keine Kugeln im Gehege gefunden, und die Tierärzte waren nicht in der Lage, die Schusstheorie zu bestätigen, da sie Vrangel nicht einer Narkose aussetzen wollten um eine genauere Untersuchung vorzunehmen. Die Snipertheorie sei die Theorie von aufgeregten Mitarbeitern gewesen, denen das Wohlergehen ihrer Tiere sehr am Herzen liegt, es hätte so passiert sein können. Wrangel gehe es gesundheitlich nicht schlecht, kein Fieber oder sonstige Anzeichen von einer Infektion, er isst und trinkt gut, eine Anästhesie berge für den 20 jährigen Eisbär ein zu großes Risiko, das man unter keinen Umständen eingehen will. Eine Strafanzeige bei der Polizei hat man nicht gemacht und ist auch nicht vorgesehen.

Earlier the zoo said in a statement that Vrangel the bear had been suffering from multiple gunshot wounds since late October. Zoo officials said they believed the bear had been shot by a sniper in a building near the zoo.

"We cannot yet confirm that the bear was shot," the spokeswoman said. "A vet inspected [the bear], but cannot say for sure that the holes are bullet wounds. The bear is getting better and is eating and drinking normally." She said the zoo did not plan to open a criminal case. (source)

Fears of polar bear shooting unfounded, says Moscow Zoo

Reports of a shooting incident which injured a polar bear in Moscow Zoo have now been denied by the management.

It had been feared that Vrangel, one of the Kranaya Presnya zoo’s star attractions, had been shot by a pellet gun after vets spotted 11 bloody holes in the animal’s fur.

Several Russian news agencies ran reports of the shooting – claiming Vrangel was dangerously injured – but the zoo’s vets have since found that the sores were most likely not caused by anything sinister.

Nothing to worry about

“He’s not feverish, eats well and there is nothing to be worried about” Elena Mendosa, the zoo’s spokeswoman, told the Moscow News. She said they got slightly too alarmed when staff found 11 strange holes on the animal. “You know, we love these animals, and were very concerned about Vrangel” she said.

Plea for animal rights

It had been suggested the assailants could shoot from a neighbouring building, as the giant Arctic predator lives in a separate open air cage out of visitors’ sight. Although no bullets were found in the cage, this theory seemed reasonable to the administration.

Logical reflection came much later, and the first reaction was emotional. “Our animals take their life in captivity humbly, they don’t have the benefits of freedom and cannot protect themselves. Don’t they have the right to live in peace and respect?” read an official message published on the Zoo’s website.

To check whether Vrangel was indeed shot could be more damaging than the supposed attack.

“In order to find out if there are any bullets stuck in Vrangel’s body we would have to sedate him,” Mendosa says. “And as we don’t know how the 20 year old animal will feel afterwards – even if he survives it – we are not going to do it.”

And there will be no report to the police over the prospect of a would-be bear hunter stalking the popular visitor attraction.

Mendosa said Vrangel is the father of two cubs living in the zoo with their mother. Male bears have to be kept separately due to safety reasons, and Vrangel will come back to his girlfriend when a new home is found for the little ones." (source)

Vrangel ist ein Wildfang, 1990 wurde bei der Wrangel Insel geboren und als verwaistes Jungtier gefangen, seit Mai 1995 ist er in Moskau, wo er mit Simona, einer 1994 geborenen St.petersburgerin eine der beiden Moskauer Zuchtgruppen repräsentiert. Er ist der Vater von zwei Kleinen, die letztes Jahr geboren wurden ; weniger bekannt vielleicht, er ist auch der Vater von Vera und damit der Opa von Flocke.

The 20-year-old bear named Vrangel has been living since 1995 at Moscow Zoo. He was found 1991 as a cub off the Arctic Ocean's Wrangle Island. Vrangel represents with Simona, born 1994 at Zoo St. Petersburg, one of the two successful breeding couples. He is father of two cubs born last year, less known maybe, he fathered also Vera and is hence Flocke's grand-father.
