Danke

Carsten Schöne
When I think of Thomas Dörflein, I recall one scene which happened to be part of a rbb report about the Zoo Berlin and which was not connected to the hand raising of a polar bear.Someone working for the medias and who is today in science journalism, and who by the way shares my first name except of the first letter, was sitting in the enclosure of the wolves, chatting with Thomas Dörflein about his work. As the keeper was right in the middle of doing it, he was not sitting together with Mr.Journalist on a tree trunk, but standing beside.
The interviewer wore an anorak with a furry coated hood. The question if it was a genuine fur or an imitated one made of fleece, might come up as an interesting one, but was in this context without any importance. More interesting that the wolves started to develop a sort of interest in this hood. A very meddlesome and mischievous wolf sneaked from behind for a closer inspection of this furry thing. Thomas Dörflein, aware of it, is grinning ...and continues with the interview. Suddenly the wolf jumps forward in order to get hold of the hood, catches it slightly, with one fang maybe, when Thomas Dörflein orders him off, using just one brief word but full with authority, the wolf took off and strolled away.An action, not taking longer than some seconds but long enough to change the complexion of that media man into a white not unsimilar to the fur of the Arctic wolv
es of Berlin.. Maybe today I lay too much into this late situation, but I was strongly under the impression that from that moment on, Thomas Dörflein enjoyed the interview much more than the journalist.

Thank you

Carsten Schöne
Ulli J has shared this story with us, I thought it a very suitable one to honour the man who was not only Knut's Mom and Dad but who was also THE man who danced with the wolves...And he really knew how to dance with them...!

Eichhörnchenzeit...Time of the squirrels...

In recent weeks, squirrels played a not entirely insignificant role, their presence at Mr. Dörflein's last resting place got quite some attention in several forums and the press. Find here the translation of above article.

"He was a great animal lover, Thomas Dörflein († 44), foster father of Berlin's famous polar bear Knut. Just about two weeks ago he was laid to rest after a heart attack on the cemetery Spandau "In the Kisseln". Since then, a squirrel has been waking at the grave, as if it would like to thank Mr. Dörflein for his love to animals.

Paula, so called by the mourners, diligently collects walnuts under the large pine, which is two meters high and plastered with messages of condolence. Despite of the many visitors the little rodent won't move away. On the contrary, it has taken advantage of the continued interest in Mr.Dörflein's grave. Cute and not shy at all Paula gets her nuts, trying to animate the visitors to bring more.

Like Dörflein, squirrels are loners. For sleeping and resting, they build nests in the trees that are called "Kobel" (sorry, no translation found). The animals do not hibernate, unless it is very cold. Then squirrels might also stay for several days in their "Kobel". And as to Paula, she does not need to worry about her winter supplies, thanks to the great interest in Thomas Dörflein, the most famous Berlin zookeeper."

And here quite a different story of locally loyal squirrels, which I had already found some time before, and as it happens to be related to the zoo in Berlin, I just add it, although there is no reference to Thomas Dörflein. -

For ten years Manfred Boden (66) has been running the ice cream shop at the monkey house at the zoo. He is known not only by children ...

"For four years, Frieda is visiting me, nibbling walnuts which I offer her, in 2006, she introduced me to her squirrel husband Alfred." The rust-brown rodent was named by " ice-man" himself and the walnuts he pays out of his own pocket ("bulk pack from wholesaler Metro").

In the meantime, Alfred and Frieda even bring their offspring.
"They come when it's still quiet, usually around 9 clock in the morning."

Don't be sad...

We are mourning and we are sad and we always come back to this photo taken by Frau Schnatterliese last year ...and we believe that Thomas Doerflein will continue what he has always done...watching over you and the one's he loved...He wanted to see Knut happy and so we will try to dry our tears and promise to you that we will continue to watch over you, little big bear!
You had the most special loving daddy who gave you and us so much. We will never forget him, he can't be replaced. But we will do our best, bringing our love and happiness to you... we all owe him for the most beautiful gift he gave to us!
