Im vergangenen Jahr ist der Gletscher Perito Moreno erstmals im Winter durchgebrochen. Dabei stürzte eine 60m hohe Eismauer und mir ihr Millionen Tonnen an Eis krachend zusammen. Der Gletscher liegt in Patagonien, einer dünn besiedelten Region rund 2800 km südöstlich von Buenos Aires entfernt. Experten wunderten sich über den Zeitpunkt des Spektakels, das etwa alle 4-6 Jahre stattfindet. Normalerweise brechen Stücke des Gletschers im Sommer auf der Südhalbkugel durch. Als Grund wird die Erderwärmung angenommen...

Vor ein paar Monaten schrieb ich an Fox's Glacier Mints, die No.1 in Sachen Schokolade mit Minzgeschmack (das nehme ich jetzt mal an, ich selbst kam noch nicht in den Genuss), da ich u.a. mehr über ihren Eisbären Peppy erfahren wollte, immerhin seit 1922 die Ikone ihres Geschäfts und Erfolgs. Eine persönliche Antwort erhielt ich nicht, jedoch stolperte ich heute über eine Seite, die ich als Teilantwort meiner Befragung akzeptiere....Ich liebe das Internet!
The bear, nicknamed Peppy, was used to promote the mints before being mothballed in the 1960s because it was considered distasteful.It was donated to a museum and long forgotten about but after being rediscovered in a dusty back room it has now been restored and put back on public display for the first time since the 1960s.The bear, measuring 1.5m high and 2m wide, stands on all fours with its head bowed forward in a pose identical to that seen on the mint wrappers.
Hayley Thompson, curator at New Walk Museum in Leicester, said: "The Polar Bear was seen by very few people and it's been gathering dust over the years and just got forgotten about.It started out doing publicity work for Fox's at carnivals and football matches in the days when people had never seen Polar bears.But it was taken out of service then generally forgotten about until the move came to light and they wanted it to go to a good home.Fox's launched the clear mints from their factory in Braunstone, Leicester, in 1922 and held a competition for workers to come up with a name and logo. A factory worker was awarded £5 for his suggestion of calling them glacier mints and having a crouching polar bear on the packaging.Managers then commissioned a taxidermist to find a polar bear and stuff it to look like the winning design. Peppy, shot dead in the 1920s, was displayed in the original factory and used for publicity around the country.
When the company was taken over by Rowntrees in the 1960s Peppy and four other bears used in promotions across the country were no longer required.Peppy was re-discovered at the museum in 2003 and has taken six years to restore.The museum is also seeking the other lost bears to display alongside Peppy in the exhibition.Big Bear Limited, which took over Fox's in 2003, refused to put Peppy back on display because it was considered "gory". Maria Moran, the firm's brand manager, said: "It's not the most politically correct thing to have a giant bear hanging around when they're facing extinction because of melting ice caps."We found it in the back when we were clearing out and decided to donate it to a museum - the best place for it.We didn't want it in the reception because it's so gory we feared it could scare the customers when they visited.It was donated to a museum and long forgotten about but after being rediscovered in a dusty back room it has now been restored and put back on public display for the first time since the 1960s.
The New Walk Museum in Leicester to which Peppy was donated in 2006, is now trying to find out more about Peppy, apart from Peppy's role of being the confectionery's icon, little is known about the bear.
"We don't know who the taxidermist was, we don't even know if it was male or female. We don't know where the bear originally came from, we know nothing at all.It's a real shame, because it's such a lovely specimen, it deserves to have some kind of history with it, so we're really hoping we can find some information. ...the original bear used was taken by the company to fetes and carnivals across the UK as a publicity stunt. It is thought there may have been as many as five bears used as the logo but Peppy is the most recent one."But Peppy was not only promoting sweets . The great white bear has even inspired the name of a local pub down Spring Bank, which has now been called 'The Polar Bear' for decades!
Nein, das ist noch nicht Sheila, denn dieses Elefantenbaby wurde 1934 aufgenommen, dem Jahr, in dem der Zoo in Belfast Eröffnung feierte. Vielleicht ist es Daisy, von der im Eingangstext des Zoos auf seiner Geschichtsseite die Rede ist. Die Geschichte eines Zoos , die mit dem Beginn des Öffentlichen Transportsektors startet. Um mehr Kundschaft in die Trambahn nach Bellevue Gardens zu locken, entscheidet man in der Nähe der Endhaltestelle einen Vergnügungspark einzurichten, der sich in Folge so großer Beliebtheit erfreute, dass in den 30er Jahren der Bau des Zoo folgte. -
Auf Hügeln liegend und damit leichtes Ziel bei Luftangriffen der Deutschen, erachtete man während des 2. Weltkriegs die Existenz gefährlicher Tiere als ein zu großes Risiko für die Bevölkerung. 33 Tiere sollten per Beschluss 1941 eingeschläfert werden, darunter auch Eisbären und Wölfe. Sheila blieb dieses Schicksal erspart, denn eine Dame nahm sie mit zu sich nach Hause...Man kannte die Geschichte, aber nicht die Dame hinter der Geschichte, und so wurde diese Dame fieberhaft vom Zoo gesucht...und man fand tatsächlich heraus, wer sie war...-
The baby elephant, Sheila, was moved out of the zoo because of fears it could be killed or freed to wreak havoc by bombers during the 'Belfast Blitz' of 1941. She was one of the lucky ones at the zoo, which is built on the hills in the north of the city.Many animals were killed because of public safety fears of an escape during the bombing.The Ministry of Public Security ordered 33 zoo animals to be killed in case they got free and attacked people - they included a tiger, a black bear, a lynx, a hyena, two polar bears and six wolves.Instead of meeting the same fate, Sheila was walked down the road by keepers to a red-brick house on the Whitewell Road where a woman gave her sanctuary in her back yard for several months until the bombing was over. The zoo knew about the story but not the lady who saved the life of Sheila. But the mystery could be solved...
Elefantenmysterium von Belfast geklärtDer Zoo Belfast hat die Identität der Frau herausgefunden, die während des Zweiten Weltkrieges ein Elefantenbaby mit zu sich nach Hause nahm, um das Tier vor deutschen Bomben zu schützen. Der Zoo Belfast besaß Fotos von zwei Frauen, die dem Dickhäuter im Garten hinterm Haus ein Schlückchen Wasser gönnen, aber wußte nicht, wer sie waren. Anläßlich des 75. Geburtstages des Zoos wurde das Publikum zu Hilfe gerufen, um die Damen zu finden. Es stellte sich heraus, daß es Denise Weston Austin und ihre Mutter Irene gewesen waren. Denise war eine der ersten Tierpflegerinnen in Belfast, eine Notwendigkeit, als die Männer zum Militär mußten. Sie ist inzwischen verstorben, aber ein Familienmitglied nahm Kontakt mit dem Zoo auf. Denises Mildtätigkeit rettete Sheilas Leben. Weil die Einwohner von Belfast Angst hatten, daß durch die deutschen Bomben gefährliche Tiere entweichen könnten, wurden 23 Tiere getötet, unter anderem drei Bären, ein Luchs und sechs Wölfe. Sheila blieb dieses Los erspart, weil Denise das Elefantenkalb abends mit nach Hause nahm und in ihrer Garage schlafen ließ. "Abends holte sie Sheila aus ihrem Gehege und lief mit ihr nach Hause", erinnert sich ihr Neffe. "Morgens lief sie wieder zurück in den Zoo, manchmal mit einem Zwischenstop beim örtlichen Bäcker, um etwas altes Brot zu holen." "Sheila erhielt auch Heu aus dem Bauernhof der Familie, viel besser als das, was sich der Zoo erlauben konnte wegen der Rationierung." Das Ritual ging solange weiter, bis Sheila einmal hinter dem Hund der Nachbarn her war und dabei durch einen Bretterzaun donnerte. Von da an mußte sie im Zoo bleiben. Denise blieb nachts bei Sheila zu Besuch, um sie während der Bombardements zu beruhigen. Sheila überlebte den Krieg und starb 1966. Denise starb 1997..
“When the Head Keeper, Dick Foster, left work, Denise took Sheila from her enclosure, walked her a short distance to her house at Whitewell Road, and walked her back up to the zoo in the morning, sometimes stopping at a shop, the Thrones Stores, on the Whitewell road for stale bread.It was also known in the area that she took Sheila for evening walks. During the night Sheila slept in the Austin’s garage.Sheila was given hay from the family farm, which was of a much better quality than the zoo could provide during an era of rationing.Sheila managed to stay hidden due to the large walls which surrounded the house, and zoo staff were not aware of her second home until she chased a dog into a neighbours garden, breaking the fence.
Neighbours brought the incident to the attention of the Head Keeper, whereupon Sheila had to remain in the zoo. Denise continued to visit Sheila in the zoo, particularly at night during Luftwaffe air raids, when she rubbed her ears to keep her calm.
Vor genau 5 Monaten am 17. Novmber 2008 starb Debby, von der man sagte, sie sei mit 42 Jahren die älteste Eisbärin in Menschenobhut gewesen. Sie hat auch nach ihrem Tod weiterhin viele Menschen bewegt und nach nun 5 Monaten sieht es so aus, dass sie im Assiniboine Park Zoo eine Statue zum Gedenken bekommt, gestiftet vom Culture, Heritage, Tourism and Sport Department um die Bedeutung Debbys anzuerkennen, die sie für die Einwohner von Manitoba hatte. 
Plus, the Zoo Gift Shop and other local Winnipeg bookstores will soon be selling a book highlighting Debby’s life, written by local author, comedian and celebrity, Jon Ljungberg."
