Hi, I just want to say a few words about birthdays. You don't know who I am, it's me, Debby from Winniepeg in the Assiniboine Park. I was a bear cub when I came there from the Russian Arctic in 1967*, and here I have had always a good life. I have had lots of visitors, 18 million so far, a lot of them still come only to visit me, similar to Knut in Bearlin...
With my long-life companion Skipper, unfortunately he died already in 1999, we had an off-spring of 6 cubs, all surviving, which in captivity is rather rare as you might know. Simba had found photos and articles about me. When she read in the beginning of August that I was so ill that everybody believed I was going to die within some days, she got very excited and sad.
I was supposed to get a big coverage then in the Outpost - as the oldest polar bear ever under the moon and the sun of this world, by the way representing about 118 years for humans. Each week Simba checked on me, if there was something new about me and my health. August passed and I was still living. Then September came and Simba found out that I was doing much better than everybody expected after the strokes I had and the quick loss of 5o kg, all happening within the 6 months before. Even with 300 KG left, it was a lot of weight and I had no real appetite anymore. To get me into the mood of eating, my caretakers spoiled me even with some chocolate, something dogs should avoid at all cost. I suppose even for polar bears it's sort of an extravagant diet! Simba was much impressed and mentioned to Mami Simba that it looked as if I were having birthday every day. That was on September 21 ; I won't refer to the days following, I know it is still painful for all of you. Shortly before Simba died herself, she said to Mami Simba that it was urgent to write something about me now while still living, not to wait until I were dead, that it was especially important in these times after Papi Thomas had gone to concentrate on everything that lives and that has significance in our lives. Each day of Debby is significant, just like a birthday...that is what she said...and that's why I write here to congratulate everyone who considers each day as if it were a birthday. Somehow it seems smart to me...

Viktor hat gesagt…

Liebe Mami Simba,
