This is Anori, child of the wind, and in fact, she is a girl...

Hier mit Vilma...-
Here with Vilma...

...ihrer aufmerksamen Mutter -
...her attentive mum

Zart und aufgeweckt....-
Delicate and vivacious...

Hungrig...-
Hungry...

Entdeckungsfreudig....-
Time for discoveries...

Ganz in Ruhe....-
Without haste...

Einfach nur lieblich, Mutter wie Tochter...-
Simply sweet, mother and daughter...

In Wuppertal leben seit 1931 Eisbären. Die letzte Geburt gab es 1995.-

Last Thursday...
Behind a six-inch thick pane, the twelve-week-old bear cub goes exploring. After the first tentative steps, Anori gets hungry and is breastfeeded before curling up. Once woken up, it's branc-nibbling-time.There is much to discover. Mom and daughter stay calm.

Anori was born on 4 January at the Wuppertal Zoo. Her first steps were taken by a surveillance camera. Mother and child spent two and a half months undisturbed in a den.
Fathered by Lars, Anori is Knut's little half-sister.
Wuppertal Zoo has a long history of raising polar bears, with the first cub born there in 1931, the zoo's website says, the last birth dates back to 1995.

Anori...Kind des Windes.....Child of the Wind

This recent photo from an observation camera at the Zoo in Wuppertal, Germany, shows polar bear mother "Vilma" and her cub "Anori" in their litter den at the zoo. Anori was born on January 4, 2012, together with a sibling who died after a week. Anori's father is "Lars", who is also the father of Berlin's famous deceased polar bear cub "Knut". (source)

Little Polar Bear asleep in the maternity den

Offspring for polar bear couple  "Vilma" and "Lars" in Wuppertal to be marvelled at only by images from a video surveillance camera. No one has access to the strictly foreclosed maternity den.

Originally Vilma gave birth to twins on January 4, of which only one survived. In the first days Vilma is said to have cared even for the dead cub, licking the body. But then she "buried" it the way polar bear moms do usually when a litter is dead or too weak. The only thing Vilma and the little bear need now is rest to avoid disturbance which could cause excessive stress sometimes causing a polar bear mom even to kill her offspring. When Vilma, originally from Rostock, lived in Nuremberg she had given birth to twins in which none of the cubs survived, she ate them after 5 weeks of exemplary care. Since no camera was installed, no one can say what Vilma  has led to devour her two cubs in January 2008, a behavior occurring in the wild and in captivity when cubs are weak or ill. Polar bear mothers are extremely susceptible to interference and the coming weeks are crucial for the survival of Anori, a Greenlandic name already given to the little bear, meaning "wind"  as it was born on a stormy day.

Currently it looks good for Anori in Wuppertal.  The little bear is already busy crawling around on the warm body of the mother - always on the lookout for the milk-giving teat.  And so the zookeeper experience just an exciting time in the break room where the monitoring system is located.

Until now the sex of Anori is not yet determined although several articles have been quick mentioning Anori either to be the half-sister or the half-brother of Knut.

Male polar bear Lars, who incidentally is the father of Knut, does not know much about all the fuss going on at the moment. He hasn't been together with Vilma already for some time now, which must be really hard on him, and this will continue now for quite some time due to security reasons as male polar bears can be dangerous for even their own offspring. ( One exception is Felix during his times in Fasano.)

Who wants to see Anori in the zoo, will probably have to wait at least until April when mother and child will emerge from the maternity den.

After the birth of polar bear girl Svenja 1995, a sister of Troll from Tierpark Berlin, Anori is the first surviving polar bear cub in the Wuppertal Zoo.So, let's just cross the fingers for Vilma and the little one!

Cloak-and Dagger Operation: Lars, the father of Knut was moved to Wuppertal

Lars jetzt in Wuppertal

News which came as a shock on Friday evening...First the announcement a day before that due to a recommendation by the EEP coordinator, Flocke and Rasputin will have to move in the beginning of 2010 to "Marineland" an adventure park in Antibes/South France, where, by the way, until now I couldn't find the "promised" sea water facility for polar bears..., and then Lars!

Lars will replace Boris who died last month in the zoo in Wuppertal. Concerning Boris' death, the zoo did not comment on it, neither on the zoo's website, neither in form of a press release which was already weird enough given the fact that Boris had been there for such a long time. Probably the zoo was just too busy to negotiate for a male bear to start breeding again...Yes, I admit, that sounds bitter, but when it comes to such secret relocations, and then on top of it, to Lars, one of my favourite bears and to destroying a well functioning polar bear group...- I can get but sarcastic, even more by looking at the enclosure which is a far cry from being cozy and should have been modernised in the first place...But as so often breeding comes first. And as it had been background for the Knut court case, Lars belonging to Neumünster, and Neumünster being in charge of Kap, a male polar bear originally thought to breed in Wuppertal, did not want to see Kap move, so it gets all back to Berlin who sent Lars, an opportunity coming in handy not just because of the transport crate still in Berlin but also to provide for more space for Knut... Thinking that merry-go-round business further, it will mean in consequence that at least one more move is still to come as Tosca, the mother of Knut, could not stay in the same enclosure with Knut once he has achieved sexual maturity... Got it??
But here now the polar bear enclosure of Wuppertal ...

And here the new female polar wolves at Zoo Berlin, I admit, really cute, especially the little pup...both could be seen already at Zoo Berlin, the first days Lars had been away...
Just for the records...they had just arrived from Wuppertal...

Erziehungsauftrag und Perspektivenwechsel...

Ooh, was macht Papa Lars denn da? - Oh, what is Papa Lars up to? Heute sollst du etwas lernen, mein Sohn! -
Today you are in for a little lesson, my son! -
As I still have an educational mandate, I will show you something now, it' about watching and showing, that's a zoo is for, isn't it?Von heute an gehe ich interessante Arten angucken, wer weiß, wie lange die noch da sind, berücksichtigt man nun Faktoren wie Glatteis etc, ich wollte schon mmer wissen, warum einige mit grünen Taschen kommen und manche in einer blauen Jacke ohne Tasche.

From today on it will be me observing interesting species, who knows for how long they will be here considering factors as black ice etc , I always wanted to know, why some come with green bags and some with blue jackets without bags. That must be of some significance. Once I heard that humans do nothing without any reason...
Also, Papa Lars, jetzt bin ich irgendwie sprachlos, darüber muss ich nachdenken...-
That leaves me somehow without words, I have to think about it...
