When paint is no fun....Meet Svoboda from Varna Zoo

That is Svoboda, a female brown bear resident of Bulgaria's zoo in Varna.
And what looks very funny at first, is anything but funny because Svoboda was the victim of a paint assault endangering her eyesight.

"There are fears this brown bear could lose the sight in one eye after cruel thugs flung paint in his face at a zoo in Bulgaria. Staff at Varna Zoo were alerted when a group of children visiting Svoboda in the bear enclosure found him doused in bright blue paint. It is not known who was behind the attack, which left vets concerned the liquid could have damaged Svoboda's eyesight in his left eye.

Vets treating the animal carefully shaved away the paint-encrusted fur and examined Svoboda's eye.The team has said it is hopeful that Svoboda was cleaned up in time to prevent any lasting damage to the bear's eyesight."

As to the thugs behind this cruel attack, I just wish they could be found and would have to endure the same treatment...

All the best to Svoboda, hoping that the vets are right and they intervened early enough...!

Schlaflied für Welpen...und ein Wiedersehen - A lullaby for pups....And a reunion...

During the recent weeks I have seen a lot of horrific photos and read a lot of articles connected to dog abuse, most of the time committed by their owners. So it was more than uplifting, to find for a break this sweet video above this morning when I was on facebook....
And I think the 2nd video about a reunion after 2 years matches well too....

Just a little reminder how important we are for our dogs...!

They live underground, have red eyes and can count to 17 ... apparently, because only every 17 years, they come out in order to reproduce. Now it's that time again. And they come in billions. It is an amazing phenomenon which is going to happen now on the East coast of the US. And most important, apart from the noise they make, they are harmless....

2013: Muttertag....Inspiring Mothers and one Grandmother

It's Mother's Day today, so reason enough to start with Jane Goodall's mother Vanne who encouraged her daughter in the early days when African wildlife adventures were an unlikely calling for a little girl in the 1930s and 1940s.

Jane Goodall with her mother Vanne

“If you really want something, and if you work hard, take advantage of the opportunities, and never give up, you will somehow find a way.”

Something which is not necessarily true only for human offspring.... as one can see here

By the way, this is Brynhilde, a brown bear mum with her 4 cubs living at Skandinavisk Dyrepark where they were visited some days ago by Christina M and her husband Réné.

There they also met 19year old polar bear mum Ilka who was swimming with her little twins, born on 21 November 2012.

Agee as cub, pics from  her facebook page

Ooops, what's that, you might think.
But that is famous Agee who was born too in Kolmarden. She is a half sister of Ilka, they share the genes of the same father, Imarec, who died in 1995, the year Agee was born. Agee was raised and trained by Marc Dumas and his wife Diane for "Beyond Just Bears" and known to all of us for her appearance in the movie "Alaska" and a variety of ads and music video clips.Agee is just tracing back her roots and so I thought it would be nice to post here also a pic of her late grand-mother Arcta

who was the mother of polar bear Mirsha who was in fact Agee's mum....

And at the very end, and also to get back to the Mother's Day theme, here's an older article about polar bear mothers in zoos which could be found on Ulli J's blog last year in May, featuring three strong mothers: Malik from Aalborg, Huggies at Ouwehands Zoo in Rhenen, and Blanche from Monde Sauvage Aywaille in Belgium.

And this video at the bottom I found yesterday by accident while I was watching the videos of Animal's Asia.
It's about the early days of Pike, a little precious treasure for all who remember her story which... I won't tell now, this is for later, otherwise I wouldn't get the video posted. Just so far, Pike was hand-raised in San Francisco by Gail Hedberg, she turned 31 last year on 25 November...

Pike & Gail Hedberg
- Sorry, this was just one photo which I could find quickly on the net, unfortunately my files about Pike are at the moment not with me... -

Just enjoy!

Breaking News from Australia....Crossing the fingers for a new cub born to Liya and Nelson

Liya with her surviving cub on Sunday

"Long-time Sea World residents Liya and Nelson are proud parents of a 15cm cub weighing 600g.
Its gender is yet to be determined as mother and baby have been snuggled in a darkened den since the birth four days ago, and will remain there for up to 10 weeks.
Sea World marine sciences director Trevor Long said the park had made the birth and after-birth experience as close to life in the wild as possible.
"Liya gave birth in the den, created to mimic the dark ice caves where polar bears give birth in the wild," he said.

"The labour was quite hard on her and she was quite uncomfortable. Two cubs were born but Liya chose to devote all her attention and efforts to one. Sadly, only the one survived, which has devastated our staff who tried to intervene, but in this case nature took charge," he said.
"Liya is a great mother and is nurturing her young cub who has not even opened its eyes yet.
"We are closely monitoring the pair and the next seven days will be critical."
Mr Long said it was an amazing achievement for the park, the Gold Coast and Australia.

 Nelson the proud father...
although there is a chance that in fact his brother Hudson was the one in question.
 Remember last year...?

"This is only the second ever polar bear born in captivity in Australia, the first was in South Australia in 1985," he said." There are only about 25,000 remaining polar bears in the world and the birth of this cub could be instrumental in the conservation of the animal." The cub will be introduced to the public in about 16 weeks when it is strong enough to leave its mother and the den.

Australia's first polar bear born in captivity was in South Australia in 1985. Sea World has been trying since 2000."
Knowing how critical the next weeks will be, we just have all to cross our fingers!!!

And for all who want to know how everything started, here the pic which says it all...:))

Der Gänsemarsch der Wölfe....Wolves...Did you know ...?

Source: Good Wolf on facebook

Wolves always travel in single file. This is done to conserve energy and clear the path for the rest of the pack (packing the snow down, etc) -- the first wolf in line is known as the "trailblazer". When the trailblazer tires, he falls to the back of the line and another wolf steps forward. Cooperation like this and conservation of energy are some of the reasons that wolves are so successful.

We all know that wolf mums are great mothers, these pics I found on the same site of Good Wolf and couldn't help but sharing them...

is about
"Understanding, appreciating, and saving the majestic wolf."

Too cool to be kissed....

I found this hilarious 3 year old pic by accident, it shows Kimmie a 3 months young giraffe from Woburn Safari Park in Bedfordshire, who obviously had second thoughts to be kissed by mum Freya publicly...:))

Here the whole opposite...Reaching up to mum Aisaqvaq to be kissed....
By the way, Ganuk lives now in Cochrane whereas his twin sister Taiga lives in Quebec. Aisaqvaq, their mother, still lives in St. Félicien.

Find more pics of Aisaqvaq and her cubs in June 2010 here....
