Sie gab es schon, als es mich noch nicht gab. Sie war da, als ich dann als bereits Erwachsene nach Berlin ziehe und ich die ersten Male den Zoo Berlin als Studentin besuche.Sie war da, als ich mit Kindern aus dem Frauenhaus den Zoo in regelmäßigen Abständen auch noch ein Jahrzehnt später als festangestellte Diplompädagogin besucht habe. Und sie war da, als ich aus Berlin wegzog.Fatou ist ein Brückenpfeiler meiner Geschichte mit dem Berliner Zoo geworden. Mein Wegzug liegt nun auch schon fast 15 Jahre zurück, und da ist sie immer noch, schöner denn je, und diesen Monat, wie ich vor kurzem angedeutet hatte, hat sie Geburtstag. Schnappszahlgeburtstag. Woraufhin sie als erstes zum Becher greift, während ihrer Geburtstagsfeier...
She was already there, when I wasn't yet. She was there when I, as a grown-up and a student, moved to Berlin, visiting the zoo in Berlin for the first time.She was there when I came with children to the zoo on a more regular basis in the context of my work in a shelter for battered women a decade later. And she was there when I moved away from Germany.Fatou from Berlin has become a pillar of my history with the Berlin Zoo. Almost 15 years have gone by since my departure, and she is still there, more beautiful than ever, and this month, as I have indicated recently, it's the month of her birthday. Multi-digital-number-with-two- numbers-identical birthday. Whereupon she first takes to the cup during her birthday party ...

"Auch wenn ihr exakter Geburtstermin nicht bekannt ist, so darf es nicht unterlassen werden, sich an die Geburt des zweitältesten Gorillas der Welt ‒ irgendwann im April 1957 in Westafrika ‒ zu besinnen.-
Although her exact birth date is unknown, so it should not be missed to remember the birth of the second-oldest gorilla in the world - sometime in April 1957 in West Africa.

Schon früh war das weibliche Affenkind in Menschenhände gelangt und von einem französischen Matrosen nach Marseille gebracht worden. Über die Besitzerin einer Hafenkneipe gelangte das damals knapp 10 kg schwere Gorillamädchen im Mai 1959 in den Berliner Zoo.
Early the female gorilla child came into human hands, and she was taken by a French sailor to Marseille.With the help of the lady owner of a harbor pub the almost 10-pound gorilla girl arrived in May 1959 at Zoo Berlin.

Dort brachte sie am 30. Oktober 1974 den ersten in Berlin gezüchteten Gorillanachwuchs zur Welt. Obwohl sie selbst früh von ihrer eigenen Mutter getrennt worden war, zog sie ihr Jungtier, das den Namen „Dufte“ erhielt, fürsorglich auf. Es sollte allerdings ihr einziges Kind bleiben.Im Laufe ihres extrem langen Lebens lernte „Fatou“ verschiedene
Gorillamännchen kennen und wurde im Juli 1985 durch die Geburt ihrer
Enkeltochter „Mpenzi“ auch Großmutter.-
There she gave birth to the first gorilla young bred in Berlin on 30th October 1974. Although she herself had been separated early from her own mother, she raised her baby girl herself in a very caring way.Dufte, the name of her daughter, should remain, however, her only child. In the course of her extremely long life Fatou gets to know different male gorillas and became in July 1985 even grandmother by the birth of her granddaughter "Mpenzi".

Zuletzt lebte sie gemeinsam mit „Gigi“, die etwas jünger war als sie selbst, aber bereits vor drei Jahren altersbedingt starb. Seitdem erfreut sich „Fatou“ am Kontakt mit den Tierpflegern, die Gesellschaft mit jüngeren Gorillas ist allerdings nichts mehr für sie.-

In ihrer westafrikanischen Heimat werden Flachlandgorillas selten älter als 35 Jahre. Der älteste in einem Zoo lebende Artgenosse ist „Colo“, der erste jemals in Menschenhand geborene Gorilla. Das ebenfalls weibliche Tier wurde 1956, nur vier Monate vor „Fatou“ in Columbus (Ohio) geboren.-

"In den Zoologischen Gärten Europas leben derzeit gut 400 Flachlandgorillas, in nordamerikanischen Zoos kommen etwa weitere 350 hinzu. Die Zucht der stark vor dem Aussterben bedrohten Menschenaffenart wird international koordiniert. Der dramatische Rückgang der Freilandbestände hat viele Gründe. Nach wie vor werden Gorillas illegal bejagt, zudem setzt ein fieberauslösendes,
oft tödliches Ebola-Virus vielerorts den Tieren zu, und zuletzt ist es die Vernichtung ihres Lebensraumes, die den ohnehin reproduktionsschwachen Menschenaffen zu schaffen macht."-
Currently there live more than 400 lowland gorillas in in European zoo favilities.In North American zoos there are about 350 more. The breeding of the highly endangered ape species is coordinated internationally. The dramatic decrease of gorillas in the wild has many reasons. Gorillas are still hunted illegally, in many places they are menaced by the deadly fever-triggering Ebola virus, and finally there is the destruction of their habitat, which adds to the further disappearing of the great apes who have in any case a low reproductive rate.

Er war lange Jahre Fatou's Pfleger und ihr freundschaftlich verbunden. Sie war auch schon im Zoo als er seine Karriere als Zoopfleger startete. Fatou hat ihn und viele andere überlebt.
