Ein Bär wird abserviert....Bad in bed...Zero & The Ladies...

Zero

It is not for the first time that we write about Zero in Milwakee, surely one of those bears who has undoubtedly some sense for tragic...Who does not remember his moat ordeal in fall 2008...?

Zero in October 2008

You might say, today again it's about a fall, but a rather different one, concerning Zero's lover abilities...but read for yourself....

Zero & Snow Lilly

Polars apart, Zero and mate breaking up

"Heaping indignity on top of captivity, the Milwaukee County Zoo has announced that Zero the polar bear is bad in bed.

So inept, in fact, that he'll be making the walk of shame to a different zoo. That's right. Zero has so literally lived up to his name sexually that he's being kicked out of Milwaukee. Think it can't happen to you? Don't push your luck.

Polar bears apparently run the same risk as place-kickers. If you can't split the uprights, people may want you gone.

Middle-aged Zero failed to impregnate or even put many moves on our zoo's female polar bear, Snow Lilly, over the past four years. So off he goes to the Seneca Park Zoo in Rochester, N.Y., where a hot number named Aurora is already applying her makeup.

Aurora from Rochester, the widow...

"Maybe he just needs the right partner," said that zoo's spokeswoman, Pam Cowan.

If it doesn't work out, Zero can try the zoo in Viagra Falls.

Now, as you know, relationships are more complicated than they appear in a press release. Maybe Snow Lilly is frigid, which is probably a plus for polar bears.

I had a conversation Tuesday with Jan Rafert, who is in charge of primates and small mammals at Milwaukee's zoo and, at the moment, is also the acting curator for bears.

"Basically, Snow Lilly and Zero pretty much kept to themselves. There's two dens in back, and they each have their own preference and each stayed on one side," he said.

Separate bedrooms! It's worse than I thought. Hate to say it, Zero, but she's just not that into you, but you may feel the same.

"For one reason or another, the male and female may not find each other attractive," Rafert said. "They just seem to be more like an old married couple. They get along fine, but sex is not a big part of their relationship."

"We haven't seen that much breeding activity. I don't know if we've ever seen any," Rafert said.

Dr. Phil couldn't fix this sexless marriage. See, it's not always global warming that threatens the survival of polar bears. Regardless of the temperature, Snow Lilly clearly doesn't want to be below Zero.

You knew the fire was out in 2008 when Zero chose 18 days in a moat over getting his mojo working with the missus. One theory is that Zero hates the Cubs so much that he doesn't want to father one. And Snow Lilly was overheard telling him, "Get your dirty paws off me."

In Zero's defense, Snow Lilly is an unproven breeder, an expression you don't want to say to her face. She seems to have irregular cycles, which hasn't helped her in the preggers department.

Or perhaps it's Zero. "It may be that he does not have viable sperm. One of the things we're looking at is possibly seeing if we can get a semen sample at the time of transport," Rafert said.

Hmm, sounds dangerous.

"He'd be anesthetized," he said.

That's good.

But none of that matters if the two bears never get busy anyway. If you're stuck in a zoo all day, I would think this would be a decent way to kill time. Look at the bonobos. They can't get enough of that funky stuff. Zookeepers are practically handing out condoms over there.

Well, so long, Zero. It's been good staring at you. For all of your 20 years, Milwaukee was home.

I'm sure Rochester's widowed Aurora is a lovely bear. Make us proud and take her for a ride on the 1,100 pound polar express."

Aurora from Cleveland Metropark Zoo- thinking of her intimate past with Zero..?

In all deinen 20 Jahren war Milwaukee dein Zuhause.

Will Aurora from Seneca Rochester really be the answer for Zero??? It would not be his first Aurora....

"The subjects of this study are Aurora (0.1) and Zero (1.0). Both were born in captivity. Aurora (2702) was born at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo on 13 November 1982, and Zero (3407) was born at Milwaukee County Zoo on 14

December 1989. They were introduced to each other for the first time on 4 May 1993. The first set of observations was made between 3 December 1993 and 17 July 1995. The activity patterns during this period were reported earlier (Grittinger, 1997). At that time, Aurora was maintained on contraceptive injections of Depo-Provera® (medroxyprogesterone acetate).

The second set of observations extended from 17 May 1999 to 19 January

2001. Aurora was not on contraceptives during this period, and oestrous signs and attempted copulations were observed by the keepers from time to time. She was even separated from Zero on various occasions with the hope of pregnancy, but this did not occur. Aurora was finally donated to Cleveland Zoo on 5 February 2001, ending the observations."

We asked Aurora from Cleveland Metropark directly about Zero's abilities in bed, but ...."No comments!"

So Zero, we just wish you good luck with the widow who by the way made headlines with a fake pregnancy after her husband Yukon died...All eyes will be on you now...Just Do IT!!!

Happy Birthday, Salt & Pepper....!!!

Where the hell are they...? Are you sure , it's the right day??????

Anyway here they are...Salt & Pepper...

Located in the Salangsdalen valley in the Bardu municipality in the county of Troms, the park covers an area of around 275 acres of wild and breath taking nature which serves as a part of the animal enclosures and total experience of visiting the zoo.

Salt and Pepper

Two brown bear cubs were born in Polar Zoo close to the end of January, one male and one female. The two little ones have already made headlines all over the world, mainly since the female is a very rare albino brown bear.

The brown bear cubs are now part of a socializing project taking place in Polar Zoo to increase animal’s welfare in captivity according to Polar Zoo animal welfare politics.

The albino female cub is called Salt while our male is called Pepper, their names originate from the color of their fur.

You can follow the socializing process through the Polar Zoo’s live bear web cam.

Pepper the movie star

Pepper has already stared in the new movie YOHAN, that will be released (in both Norwegian and English) on December 11, 2009. The film is based on the real life experiences of children who were sent out to “wander” in search of work during the 1800’s and early 1900’s in Southern Norway. Another star in the movie is Alexander Rybak.

Bear cubs set for national celebrity
Two little bear cubs, one of which was born a rare albino at the Polar Zoo in Bardu, Nord-Troms, are poised for national star status. A documentary about the unusual siblings, who emerged with their mother after her hibernation last winter, is being prepared for Norwegian Broadcasting (NRK) and set for broadcast next year. The bears, named "Salt" and "Pepper," already have attracted record visitors to the zoo and now local newspaper Nye Troms has reported that Harstad firm Relation 04 has followed their first year of life on tape. The documentary will show both the bear cubs' public life and how they're cared for behind the scenes.

To be honest, we still don't know the exact birthday of Salt & Pepper, just that it was by the end of January last year, so we waited more or less until the last hours of the last January day - so it can't at least not be too early...

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, SALT & PEPPER!!!!!

Baltic zu Hause - Dog joins crew of ship that rescued him

Dem ist nichts anderes hinzuzufügen.WARSAW, Poland (AP) - A dog rescued from the Baltic Sea after braving a 75-mile journey on an ice floe is making himself at home on the Polish research ship whose crew rescued him, the captain said Friday.

Jerzy Wosachlo, the captain of the Baltica, said the dog slept on a blanket in the ship's laboratory, then shared a sausage breakfast with the crew. He said the dog often sticks close to the mechanic who saved him but also has started moving around as he pleases, enjoying the company of people.

"We have enrolled him as a crew member," Wosachlo said.

Nicknamed "Baltic," the dog _ furry and friendly _ will continue in that capacity unless his owner is found, the captain said. The ship is preparing to sail Feb. 10 on a brief mission _ with the dog, unless he is afraid, Wosachlo said.

With the ship in the port of Gdynia on Friday, the black-and-brown mongrel was occasionally taken on land for walks, he said.

The Sea Fishing Institute that owns the ship sent a bowl and a squeaking toy, and the scientists on board brought dog food. And Wosachlo was receiving numerous calls from people offering money to feed the dog or wanting to adopting him.

After news of the dog's rescue broke, four people called saying he was theirs. But the dog kept his distance from the first two, showing no recognition. Two other putative owners who had planned to come for the dog Friday canceled, Wosachlo said.

President Lech Kaczynski, himself a dog owner, sent the crew a letter praising its action in saving the dog's life.

"Such gestures make our world... a better one," Kaczynski wrote.

Wiederholungstäter Island ....Shame...Another polar bear shot in Iceland

Und wieder...

Verirrter Eisbär in Island erschossen

An Land stellten ihn drei Jäger.

Shot polar bear No.1, Iceland - 03.06.2008, please see youtube video here & Blinkx-ITN-video here!

(Vienna Online/28.01.2010)

Shot polar bear No.2, Iceland - Ofeig when he was spotted by a 12 year old girl- mid June 2008, no videos found

Polar bear shot in Iceland
"A polar bear was spotted today (27 January) in Thistilfjordur, northeast Iceland by a farm worker who was stood less than 100 metres from the bear when she noticed. Police took the decision to shoot the bear, as conditions need to be right to affect a rescue – chief among them the stipulation that people not be endangered.

The bear’s arrival in Iceland is highly unusual. Two polar bears were shot and killed in Iceland in the summer of 2008 and no others had been spotted for around 20 years before.

The three reasons stated for the decision to shoot the bear were: human safety, the abundance of polar bears in eastern Greenland (where the bear was almost certainly from) and the huge costs involved in capturing it alive and returning it home." (IceNews/27.01.2010)

Shot polar bear No.3, Iceland- 27.01.2010 (this photo was published within the news about bear No.3, it might be an archive photo of 2008)

By the way, did you know that Iceland's " oldest sport association ...is the Reykjavík Shooting Association, founded 1867. Rifle shooting became very popular in the 19th century and was heavily encouraged by politicians and others pushing for Icelandic independence. Shooting remains popular and all types of shooting with small arms is practiced in the country." (see: wikipedia)

Another story from Poland....Dog rescued from ice floe in Baltic Sea...Oder , wie kommt der Hund aufs Eis?

After Sarah Tucker last year in August, now quite a different kind of unusual story with happy ending about a dog and his rescue ...
A dog drifted for at least 4 days on an ice floe in the Baltic Sea...
That's Baltic, after his odyssey on an ice floe of the Baltic Sea.

"WARSAW, Poland – A frightened, shivering dog was rescued after floating at least 75 miles (120 kilometers) on an ice floe down Poland's Vistula River and into the Baltic Sea, officials said Thursday.

Now his saviors just have to figure out who really owns him.

Four people have already claimed him, but so far rescuers say there's been no wagging tail of joy from the miracle dog they nicknamed "Baltic."

The dog's frozen odyssey came as Poland suffers through a winter cold snap, with temperatures dipping to below minus 4 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 20 Celsius).

The thick-furred male dog was found adrift Monday 15 miles (24 kilometers) out in the Baltic Sea by the crew of the Baltica, a Polish ship of ocean scientists carrying out research.

Researcher Natalia Drgas said Thursday the rescue was difficult and at one point it seemed the dog had drowned.

"It was really a tough struggle. It kept slipping into the water and crawling back on top of the ice. At one point it vanished underwater, under the ship and we thought it was the end, but it emerged again and crawled on an ice sheet," Drgas said.

At that point, the crew lowered a pontoon down to the water and a crew member managed to grab the dog by the scruff of his neck and pull him to safety.

Too weak to shake off the frigid water, Baltic was dried and wrapped in blankets. After he warmed up, he was massaged, fed and soon got on his feet to seek company, Drgas said.

A firefighter in Grudziadz, on the Vistula river 60 miles (100 kilometers) inland from the Bay of Gdansk, told The Associated Press the dog was spotted Saturday floating on ice through the city. Firefighters tried to save him but could not approach the dog due to shifting ice sheets, said the officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The Baltica crew, now moored in the port city of Gdynia, have been searching for the dog's owners, ship captain Jerzy Wosachlo said. So far four people have claimed him, but Baltic has not claimed any of them back, Drgas said.

The dog didn't welcome the first two people to come for him, keeping his distance and showing no recognition toward a couple on Wednesday and a woman on Thursday who both said he was theirs. Two other would-be owners were still en route to Gdynia for a possible reunion.

Once in port, the brown-and-black mongrel was taken to a veterinarian, who found him in surprisingly good condition and estimated his age at around 5 or 6 years old. Veterinarian Aleksandra Lawniczak said the 44-pound (20-kilogram) dog was clearly frightened but in strikingly good shape and had suffered no frostbite.

A dog with thick fur and a layer of fat can survive such cold conditions for as long as eight days if it has water to drink, Lawniczak said.

She described Baltic as a friendly dog who was clearly well treated before getting lost.

Wosachlo said the research team is prepared to adopt Baltic if his original owner is never found."

See here the video of Baltic's rescue which unfortunately does not explain how the dog came to float on the ice in the first place...

We will get back to you as soon as we have heard any more recognition-tail-wagging-news ..., maybe he is decided only to wag his tail when seeing his rescuers...?))

Anyway it is a heartwarming story and thanks to everybody involved to rescue this nice looking guy...!!!

Already in September: Polands only polar bear Tuya died

This is Tuya, Poland's only polar bear until end of September 2009. Tuya, also known as Snow White as called so by her keepers, died on Thursday, 24 September of liver cancer at the age of 31.

She had been living for many years at Wroclaw Zoo (which was Breslau long ago). She came to Wroclaw from Upper Silesia 30 years ago with her brother Icicles. The polar bear siblings were born in the family of Hansel and Gretel in Chorzow Zoo in 1978, which was then quite a sensation. They were the first polar bears born born in the country - said Dr Miroslaw Piasecki of Wroclaw Garden.

Not a stamp of Wroclaw but from Poland anyway

Since then, Poland has failed to reproduce polar bears.

Tuya died at the age of 31, which means that she lived to a ripe old age, and as Polish zoos deem their conditions as unsuitable for polar bears, Tuya will probably remain in the country's memory as the last "Polish polar teddy bear".

In September, Tuya was supposed to go to Hanover, where a new polar enclosure is getting built. It is here where Olinka's twins from Vienna will be living. I was afraid, however, that Tuya would not survive until then", said Radosław Ratajszczak, director of the Wroclaw Zoo.

Tuya had cancer of the liver with numerous metastases. Liver cancer was also the cause of death for Hope from St.Louis and Olaf, the father of Klondike & Snow from Denver. Unfortunately I couldn't find anything so far about Tuya's brother Icicles and her parents. And here some general information about Wroclaw Zoo:

"The City Zoological Garden in Wroclaw was originally established in 1865, which makes it the oldest zoo in Poland (a slightly ironic boast, since in 1865 Wroclaw was the German town of Breslau!). As well as being the oldest, The Wroclaw Zoological Garden has the largest collection of animals in Poland, with almost 7,000 in number from 600 different species, in an area covering 33 hectares.

Like most institutions in Wroclaw, the zoo has a troubled history. In 1921, following the economic crisis in Germany, it was forced to shut down. It was reopened in 1927 and enjoyed a healthy period of growth, however the events of World War II saw much of the zoo destroyed and many of the animals were killed or lost. After the war, with Wroclaw returning to Polish hands, the resurgence of Wroclaw University and its vested interest in the natural sciences paved the way for the zoo to be reopened in 1948 – albeit with just 150 animals of 60 different species. Great support for the zoo amongst the townspeople ensured that the garden quickly grew in stature, overcoming a number more setbacks, so that by the end of the 50s it had expanded to its current size.
"

More about bears in all Polish zoos you can find on an interesting site called bearproject.

And in a very informative article about the future of zoos in the Financial Times last year, " What are zoos for?", you will find more about the views of Wroclaw Zoo's director, Radoslav Ratajszczak, who "claims to have visited 407 zoos since he was a child", and who "was the first person from communist eastern Europe to attend a zookeeper’s training course in the west", which certainly had an impact on the zoo's recent development. It is a long article, so take some time, it's worthwhile!

More about bears in all Polish zoos you can find on another interesting site called bearproject.

No bad news from the zoo in Muenster. After the death of Gana on Sunday, Fatima, the second female gorilla, already aged 37 and childless, seemed to have adopted Claudia, the little offspring of her best friend Gana. If that continues to develop so well, Claudia may not have to go into custody of the rescue center in Stuttgart's Wilhelma. In order not to risk the option of being raised by a gorilla from the group, Claudia is bottle fed several times a day by employees of the zoo only through bars. As long as the gorillas are interested in Claudia, there is no necessity for sending her to the rescue breeding station in Stuttgart. The first autopsy of Gana is now available, it seems that Gana suffered from changes in her brain which wouldn't have been treatable, the cause of these brain lesions is not yet clear.

Gana ist tot...RIP

Gana is dead...
She made headlines around the world...causing more than one discussion about grief and mourning in animals...Now it's our turn to mourn her...
...who was never able to see her offspring grow...

Gorilla who kept dead baby in 2008 dies

BERLIN (AP): A German zoo says the gorilla who gained fame for mourning her dead baby by carrying its body for several days in 2008 has died following illness.

Muenster zoo spokeswoman Ilona Zuehlke told the DAPD news agency that a keeper found 12-year-old Gana dead in her cage early Sunday. Zuehlke said the exact cause of death has not been determined, but the gorilla had been ill for several weeks.

Gana became famous through pictures of her cradling the lifeless body of her 3-month-old son Claudio who had died of a severe intestinal infection in 2008. Zookeepers said at the time such behavior is not uncommon for gorillas.

Last April she gave birth to a healthy daughter who was named Claudia and still lives at the zoo (see first pics above).
