Ich bin die Alphawölfin im Bärliner Zoo...und obwohl Bärlin weit weg ist von Alaska, bin ich sehr beunruhigt. Beunruhigt und wütend. Sie möchten wissen warum, lesen Sie, was sich Frau Palin nun wieder hat einfallen lassen. Eigentlich mag ich Menschen, d.h. auch Frauen, vor allen Dingen, wenn sie wie unsere Frau Weckert mit lecker Mäusen, Kaninchen und Hühnern vorbeikommt. Aber Frau Palin, die macht mich krank..., wirklich! -

In fact, usually I like humans, means women included, especially when they come along with tasty mice , rabbits and chicken as our Frau Weckert does. But as to Mrs. Palin, ...she makes me sick,...really!

Bad news from Holland...Swimmer didn't make it...

Das ist Mama Huggies mit ihren beiden Kleinen, Walker und Swimmer. Diese Woche hatten sie ihren ersten großen Ausglug nach draußen, sehr zum Vergnügen der Weltüffentlichkeit. Huggies kümmerte sich fürsorglich und den Kleinen schien es gutzugehen, auch wenn der Gewichtsunterschied zwischen den beiden Geschwistern für Fragen sorgte. Heute wurde der kleine Swimmer tot im Gehege aufgefunden. Die Todesursache steht noch nicht fest.

Dies ist eine sehr traurige Meldung, eigentlich hatte ich unten in dem Beitrag zu Japan auch einige Fotos von diesen beiden Kerlchen herausgesucht gehabt, die Nachricht traf sicher nicht nur mich völlig überraschend.

Polar bear cub dies at animal park

Visitors to the Ouwehands Animal Park in Rhenen have reported seeing a three-and-half-month old polar bear cub dead in its enclosure. The cub, called Swimmer, was the smallest one of a pair of born on 14 December 2008. Swimmer weighed just four kilos (...) but the other, Walker, weighed 10 kilos. The heavier cub is said to be in good health. Ouwehands authorities say they cannot determine cause of death as yet.

The mother, Huggies, was found on a iceberg off the Siberian coast in 1994 and transported to the Dutch wildlife park.

About 50 polar bears are currently raised in Japan, and only two little bears have been born successfully by natural reproduction since 2000: Tsuyoshi, born in December 2003 (female, now bred in Kushiro Zoo, in Hokkaido), and Pirka, born in December 2005 (female, now bred in Obihiro Zoo, in Hokkaido).

Both are the cubs of Maruyama Zoo’s Denali and Rara. Their births are of course the results of the affinity between the two parents and of the blessed fecundity of Rara, but also of the fact that the zoo’s staff is always anxious to maintain a good environment for bear mothers to give birth and raise their babies safely.

Sapporo is located at relative high latitudes in Japan, and in winter the weather is cold and snow falls and accumulates; that is why you can see polar bears living in a snowy environment. But, if a female is suspected to be pregnant, the bear enclosure and its surroundings are closed from falls to early spring, not only to public but also to the staff, in order to provide the mother a quiet environment. We can not recreate the same conditions as in the polar ice field, but we make our possible for the bear mother to spend very quite times from the last period of her pregnancy to the first period of cub raising.

The number of polar bears is declining because of noxious chemicals, climate change and hunting, and they have been added as vulnerable (VU) to the 2006 red list of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
We can take for granted that the main reason why this beautiful and brave bear became endangered is global warming, which is caused by the CO2 emissions due to humans’ industrial activities.　There are several opinions on the causes and risks of global warming, but it is certain that the melting of the polar ice causes great damages to polar bears that hunt seals on sea ice.

Maruyama Zoo, like several other zoos in the world, has been entrusted the role of an animal ark that preserves endangered species and makes animals reproduce. Polar bears must be more protected.

In 2003, according to the international pedigree registration, there were 389 bears (almost 400), raised in 160 places, and some cubs have been born since.
Recently, some new born cubs gained publicity: Knut, born in December 2006 in Berlin (Germany), and raised by humans since he has been abandoned by his mother; two twins born in December 2007 in Wien (Austria); Flocke (female), also born in December 2007, and like Knut, raised by humans; two twins (one has passed away since) born in December 2008 in Alborg (Denmark).

A new snow-white baby cried for the first time in December 2008, here in Sapporo. The cub and its mother Rara are still retired in the maternity room, but you will be able to see the cute baby in the lasting snow of spring 2009. If this cub grows safely, it will become the third natural birth to succeed for Denali and Rara.

We would like this cub to become the ambassador of wildlife, the messenger of North Pole. We, the Maruyama Zoo’s staff, wish that seeing this cute little bear, people of the world will think about endangered animals, and about the impact of people’s way of living on wildlife.

ホッキョクグマは賢いうえにとても神経質な動物で、飼育下での自然繁殖はなかなか成功しません。
オスとメスの相性が合わずに交尾に至らなかったり、母熊が子育てを放棄してしまったり、といった例が多々あります。
ここ日本では、約50頭のホッキョクグマが飼育されていますが、西暦2000年以降、自然繁殖で無事成育したのは、たったの2頭だけです。2003年 12月に生まれた「ツヨシ」（メス・現在は北海道釧路市の動物園にて飼育）と2005年12月に生まれた「ピリカ」（メス・現在は北海道帯広市の動物園に て飼育）です。
どちらも円山動物園のデナリとララの間に生まれた子です。彼らの相性や、ララの母としての資質といった要素に恵まれたことももちろんですが、母熊が安心して子供を産んで育てられるよう、円山動物園では環境の整備にも気を配っています。
ここ札幌は、日本においては緯度の高い都市で、冬は寒冷で厚く雪が降り積もり、ホッキョクグマが雪のなかで過ごす姿を見ることができます。けれども、メ スが妊娠している可能性のある年は、秋から春先までクマの飼育舎の周囲を閉鎖して、お客さまだけではなく、職員も立ち入らず、静かな環境を母熊に提供して います。北極圏の氷原のように、とはいかないものの、母熊が極力落ち着いて妊娠の後期から子育ての初期にいたるまでを過ごせるように、できる限りの配慮を しています。

有害な化学物質や気候変動、狩猟のためにその数を減らし続け、ホッキョクグマは国際自然保護連合IUCN）が発行している、レッドリスト2006年版において、危急種（VU）と認定されました。
この美しく勇猛なクマが絶滅の危機に晒されている最も大きな原因は、人間の産業活動から排出されるCO2による地球温暖化である、という説が有力です。
地球温暖化については、その原因やリスクに諸説あるものの、氷海の上でアザラシを狩るホッキョクグマにとって、北極圏の氷の消失が大きなダメージとなることはほぼ間違いないでしょう。
　
円山動物園は、世界の多くの動物園と同じく、失われていく種を保存し、繁殖させる生物の箱舟としての役割を担っています。　ホッキョクグマは今最も守るべき種のひとつです。
　
世界の動物園においては、2003年時点の国際血統登録では、160施設、389頭（約400頭）が飼育され、年間数頭が生まれています。

そして2008年12月9日、ここ札幌で、真っ白な赤ちゃんが産声をあげました。お母さんのララと赤ちゃんはまだ産室にこもっていますが、2009年のまだ雪の残る春先、きっと可愛い赤ちゃんの姿をお目にかけることができるでしょう。赤ちゃんが無事に育ったなら、デナリとララの間での記念すべき３回目の自然繁殖成功例となります。その子には、野生からの大使、北極圏からのメッセンジャーとしての役割を担ってもらいたい、と考えています。　とてもキュートなその姿を見て、世界中の人々に、危機にさらされる動物たちのこと、そして彼らに影響を及ぼしている自分たちの暮らし方について、思いを馳せてみてほしい、それが円山動物園の願いです。

Polar Bear Travel News....Eisbären unterwegs...

Ja, ich habe mich anstecken lassen vom Reisefieber und als erstes meine eigene Company gegründet. Denn die ersten drei Tage auf der ITB waren für die Profis und da wir Eisbären Profis sind, was Reisen angeht, müssen wir auch vertreten sein. Böse Zungen meinen ja, dass es bei uns nur um Sex-Tourismus geht. Aber mir gefällt der Ausdruck Honeymoon-Reisen viel besser. Darum geht es aber heute noch nicht. Wir beginnen dort, wo für einige von uns das Reisen begann...-

OK, travel fever is contagious and so I have quickly founded my own travel related agency as the first 3 days have been for pro's only, and as we as polar bears are pro's concerning traveling, being represented at the world biggest tourism trade fair is not only fair but a must. There are some evil tongues around connecting us and our travel activities with sex-tourism. I prefer speaking of Honeymoon-traveling. Trudi.....oder warum die ITB Tourismusmesse auch für Bären spannend sein kann...

Das ist Trudi mit Mariana in Milano letzten Monat während der BIT, der Internationalen Tourismusbörse in Italien. -
This is Trudi with Mariana in Milano last month during the BIT, the International Tourism Fair in Italy.

Das hat mir Mami Simba geschickt. Mariana kommt nämlich aus meinem Aussenposten in Rodrigues und war dort um Rodrigues bekannter zu machen, dabei hat sie Trudi kennengelernt. Seit Dienstag ist eine Delegation aus Rodrigues nun hier in Bärlin. Heute beginnt nämlich die ITB, da gibt es in Halle 20 auch einen Stand mit meinem Aussenposten. Ich glaube, an einem Tag gehe ich auch dort hin. Meinem Aussenposten Guten Tag sagen. Und mich mal umschauen , vielleicht treffe ich ja Trudi oder andere Eisbären, die ihren Urlaub planen. Mal sehen, vielleicht fliege ich ja nochmal wirklich zu meinem Aussenposten.The photo with Trudi was sent to me by Mami Simba. And Mariana who met Trudi in Milano, was there to promote Rodrigues which is my Outpost, on the Tourism Fair. Yesterday she arrived together with Carine from Rodrigues Tourism Office to do the same in Bearlin, to make my Outpost more known to Germans during ITB which starts today. Maybe I will go there too, just to say hello to my Outpost. Maybe I will meet Trudi or other polar bears who are planning their next travels.I might be even tempted to give Rodrigues another try....

生日快樂 - Happy Birthday, Taotao!

Diesen Bären mit Lätzchen (ich geb es zu und wie auch Frau UlliJ sagen würde, SEHR gewöhnungsbedürftig...), kennen wir schon. Im Januar berichteten wir zum ersten Mal über Taotao, eine chinesische Handaufzucht. Im Januar wog dieser nette Bärenjunge (jawoll, auch ein Junge!) noch 35 kg, gestern waren es schon 102 kg! Und es sieht aus, als wenn es zum Geburtstag echte Sahnetorte für ihn gab, ich entdecke zumindest keinen Fisch...

Wie auch immer, alles Gute nachträglich zum Geburtstag, Taotao!Polar bear boy (yes, it's a boy...)Taotao enjoys one year birthday cake at Dalian Laohutan Ocean Park, in Dalian, northeast China's Liaoning Province, Mar. 9, 2009. Handraised Taotao who was born in the park on March 9th, 2008 has grown up from the beginning of 495 grams to 102 kilograms now.In January, when we introduced him in the K-files, he just weighed 35 KG, maybe he got cream cake not only yesterday?

Happy birthday, little Taotao, and hopefully lots of good fish from now on...!

Зоопарк Удмуртии объявил конкурс на имя для нового обитателя – белого медвежонка

В зоопарке Удмуртии появился новый обитатель северных широт – годовалый белый медвежонок. Неделю назад он был привезен из казанского зоопарка, где остались его родители: папа по кличке Пермяк и мама Малышка.

Зоопарк Удмуртии объявляет конкурс на самое оригинальное имя для малыша. По правилам имя должно начинаться на букву «п», как имя его отца, и в нем должна содержаться буква «м» - первая буква имени матери. Все идеи принимаются по телефону 59-60-98 или по адресу 426033 г.Ижевск, ул. Кирова, 8.

А пока медвежонок привыкает к своему новому дому. В Зоопарке Удмуртии он находится на карантине, живет в большом просторном изолированном вольере, расположенном в экспозиции «Белый север». Условия здесь значительно лучше, чем в его прежнем месте обитания, в частности, в вольере находится бассейн с водой, который малыш постепенно осваивает. За несколько дней у медвежонка уже появилось любимое лакомство – замороженный студень на палочке. Тем не менее, он еще немного нервничает, однако сотрудники зоопарка уверяют, что это состояние временное и очень скоро мишка адаптируется к новым условиям.

Der Zoo Udmurtiens hat einen neuen Bewohner nördlicher Breiten - einen einjährigen Eisbären. Vor einer Woche wurde er aus dem Zoo Kasan gebracht, wo seine Eltern blieben: Vater Permjak und Mutter Malyschka. Der Zoo Udmurtiens rief einen Wettbewerb aus um den originellsten Namen für den Kleinen. Der Name soll mit "P" beginnen, wie der Name seines Vaters, und er soll den Buchstaben "M" enthalten, den ersten Buchstaben des Namens der Mutter.

The Outpost got news from Udmurtia. A name competition has been announced for a little one year old polar bear who arrived in mid February from Zoo Kasan. His parents are still living there: Dad Permjak and Mom Malyschka. The zoo is now looking for the most original name for starting with "P" as the name of his father and including an "m", the first letter of his mother's name. So, we are looking forward to the outcome!....Yeah, and it seems as if they are looking for a boy's name if UlliJ did the translation correctly...(By the way, until now she did not explain herself why she was able to do the translation in the first place...))
