...Und da ist es sogar kälter...- ... And cooler ones' even too...!

Dieses außergewöhnliche Pinguinbild von Erich und Heide Wilts, den beiden bekanntesten deutschen Seglern mit Vorliebe für Temperaturen weit unter dem Gefrierpunkt, stammt aus einem meiner Lieblingsbücher 'Segelziele voller Wunder' . -
This extraordinary pic of a lonesome penguin was taken by Erich and Heide Wilts, probably the most famous German sailors with soft spots for everything else than hot spots, and can be found in one of my favourite books, 'Segelziele voller Wunder'.

Und hier geht's zum Pinguinaussenposten GARS O'Higgins, wo man per Webcam (2) die Aktivitäten der Eselpinguine beobachten kann, auch regelmäßig dokumentiert bei World of Animals, wo es auch aktuellere Fotos zu sehen gibt als das obige. Ein erstes Ei soll am 23.11.2008 gesichtet worden sein. Die Station GARS O'Higgins wird seit 1991 vom Deutschen Zentrum für Luft-und Raumfahrt betrieben, Kamera 1 ist spendenfinanziert und gibt es seit 2004 . Eine dritte Schulklasse hatte das ermöglicht. Am 19. September wurden dieses Jahr die erste kleine Gruppe Pinguine gesichtet. Es gab unverhältnismäßig viel Schnee ab Oktober und wie erfolgreich die Brutsaison verlaufen wird, hängt nun vor allem davon ab, ob und wann starke Orkane kommen, denn dieses Jahr haben auffällig viele Brutpaare ihre Nester an ungeschützten Stellen gebaut, da wo als erstes Schnee getaut war. Über einen Blog von Martin Grund kann man sich ebenfalls gut informieren. -And here...welcome to the penguin outpost of the German Antarctic Receiving Station (GARS) O'Higgins. This station has started in 1991, mainly doing cartography work, geological and weather research. Since 2004 the first webcam could be installed, thanks to the fund raising activities of a school class project in Germany the first camera could be installed. This year the first smaller group of penguins was sighted on September 19. As there has been more snow compared to the seasons before, it will depend now on the occurence of storms, if the nests with the eggs will survive, this year more penguins have laid their eggs in unprotected areas, just where snow melted first as they were already a little late due to the weather.
