-This extraordinary pic of a lonesome penguin was taken by Erich and Heide Wilts, probably the most famous German sailors with soft spots for everything else than hot spots, and can be found in one of my favourite books, 'Segelziele voller Wunder'.
And here...welcome to the penguin outpost of the German Antarctic Receiving Station (GARS) O'Higgins. This station has started in 1991, mainly doing cartography work, geological and weather research. Since 2004 the first webcam could be installed, thanks to the fund raising activities of a school class project in Germany the first camera could be installed. This year the first smaller group of penguins was sighted on September 19. As there has been more snow compared to the seasons before, it will depend now on the occurence of storms, if the nests with the eggs will survive, this year more penguins have laid their eggs in unprotected areas, just where snow melted first as they were already a little late due to the weather. You will find infos, pics and videos also in the blog of Martin Grund.Photo credits: Erich Wilts, webcam GARS O'Higgins, World of Animals
